Pregnancy Scare...somebody help me!
This is probably going to seem dumb to a lot of women out there but I have no experience so please be patient with me :-) The other day I was late about 4-5 hours late taking my BC pill. It was the first one of a new pack and I was late because the pharmacy didn't refill it in time. They lost it and I had to go running around trying to find a pharmacy with my prescription...chaos...Anyways, that was five days ago.
My question is this, how soon can you take a pregnancy test and have it be effective? I'm just worried because we had sex that morning before I was able to get my pill and today and yesterday I just have not felt good at ALL. My appetite's all weird and my stomach just feels funny.
I just got married a few months ago so I'm kinda new at all this, Am i over reacting? Is there anything I can do?
yep, you're totally over-reacting. if you missed a day or two, you might be justified in worrying, but five hours late is no big deal. you feel weird because you're anxious.
just relax. until you miss a period, there's no need to worry.
Don't worry, I am sure you are fine! I also felt sick this past few weeks and was not at all pregnant as it turns out ... it was all in the mind.
However, you can take a test the day your period is expected (ClearBlue Easy Digital are the best IMO). The rate of accuracy is about 99% then. If you take it earlier you may get a false negative.

With almost all Medications you have a 2 hour window. If your really stressing about this, You can speak to your pharmacist or any Pharmacist really to see if the pill was still effective. Im not sure how soon you can find out if you are pregnant though. Hope everything works out for you.
I think it depends on the type of pill.
The type I have experience with is the triphasic (you take three different dosage pills depending on where in the cycle you are, they are red, white and ochre pills). It is not a problem if you don't take it on the same time each day.I've forgotten plenty of times in the evening, and taken them in the morning.
I think other pills don't have the same tolerance for time differences, but 4 hours doesn't strike me as very late.
It is a bit early to be having moning sickness if you've not even missed your first period! (Assuming you're on a kind of pill where you have a period)
Talk to the pharmacist, or check online the type of pill, perhaps?
You can miss one pill by an entire day and still be protected, so 4 hours is really nothing. Not to mention you are not likely to be ovulating so soon after your period. Your upset stomach is almost certainly attributed to your anxiety over the situation, and nothing more.
It is very very unlikely that you are pregnant, so try and relax and see if you don't feel better soon. You can't take a pregnancy test until your next period so worrying about it between now and then will only make things worse!
Supposedly you need to wait til your first missed period to take a pregnancy test. You're probably fine, since a) you took the pill only a few hours late, b) people coming off the pill usually have to wait at least a few months to get pregnant when they are *trying*. Don't stress; that'll just make it worse, because then your next period could be late due to stress, etc. etc. I know how you feel though, I've been there and probably will be there again. When it's happening to you, all reason goes out the window. Just try to remain calm and remember it's all going to be okay.
It really does depend on the type of pill you're on. I'm on the progestin-only "mini-pill" because I'm breastfeeding. Everything I've read about it states that even if I miss a dose by a couple hours, I have an increased risk of pregnancy. The mini-pill is one of the few that are effected heavily by taking it at the same time every day. One fact that stuck with me was that one pill BARELY holds off ovulation for 24 hours. I don't know many women who take the mini-pill when they're not breastfeeding, though.
I used the ClearBlue test 3-4 days before my missed period and got a positive. I also tested 5 days before my missed period and got a negative. So, even though the ads say the test is accurate up to 5 days before, that's not necessarily true.
You would also not be experiencing pregnancy symptoms after only a few days. Most likely, implantation wouldn't have even occured yet (no implantation=no symptoms).
Thank you all so much for your replies! I think you guys are right and I just got so nervous about things that my stomach has been hurting and also i think I may just have a little digestive upset. I'm usually so good about taking the pill every day at the exact same time that this one just freaked me out.
I'll just keep my fingers crossed and pray that I get my period this month :-) But thanks a lot, i feel much better now!
Hi, as an FYI for future reference, if you are ever in the same boat but actually miss a pill or two, you can take the morning after pill within 5 days of intercourse to prevent pregnancy. Contrary to some people's beliefs, this is NOT the abortion pill - it's just a very strong version of the birth control pill and works the same way, as conception doesn't occur immediately anyway. :)

Go SomaKiss!
(and as a postscript-- if you do use the morning after pill it is COMPLETELY normal for your cycle to be wonky for the next one after. And the morning after pill is about 80% effective within 72 hours of intercourse .. 3 days... and a little less as days go by..... get a scipt, keep one in your house and a refill available. A saving grace for a condom breaking, ,potential date rape drug use, etc.... it will not harm an already impanted embryo. Its fairly inexpensive (about 30 bucks)...and totally worth it even when you dont think you should have a problem)
AND BIGGER PS I just remembered IF YOU ARE OVER 17 NO RX NEEDED FOR PLAN B. Gosh amazing. Keep a pack in your nightstand. No excuses.
You should be fine. If you read the instructions to the pills, I think it says you can go a day or two and be fine as long as you take the missed pills asap. I was on a low dose "mini" pill which is progesterin only. The "mini" pill is more sensitive to when you take it but you can still miss a day and be ok.
Hey I didn't know that about the morning after pill! I think I may just go get some to have just in case. I thought it was only effective "the morning after" but if it's good up to five days that better, especially if I don't need a prescription for it :-) Thanks again everyone
P.S. It's been a week and I am feeling much better!
