I gained weight during pregnancy, more then 20 kilos. I lost 11 already. Now I am breastfeeding, and I stopped losing weight. Besides that I have diabetes. Does anyone knows when the belly is going to return to normal, and how much I have to eat to have good quality milk and lose weight in the same time?
In my experience, a full 9 years after giving birth, my belly is still far from normal... LOL! If you're breastfeeding a very young baby it's not a good idea to cut calories because you need lots of good nutrition and plenty of energy in order to cope. I'd suggest you check out the calorie recommendation for someone your size/age/activity level (and set it up a notch to allow for being a new mother) to maintain. Since breastfeeding uses up a little more energy... typically 200 - 300 a day... you should find your weight starts to come down very slowly. Otherwise, wait until your baby is weaned and then step up your weight-loss efforts then.
Can't tell you what the expert opinion is. My own experience with my babies were that they were both serious milk guzzlers. I ate reasonably healthy + running around taking care of baby + some walking with the stroller to the park and back everyday + normal housework and breastfeeding, and within 1 year I was about 5 pounds LOWER than my pre-pregnancy weight, no special effort involved. New motherhood is tiring and challenging enough without worrying about a diet too.
I've heard breastfeeding takes up to 500 cals a day, especially in the early months.
gi jane: I agree about the belly! sigh. They're worth it still!
*sigh* I am in the same boat. I have a 3 months old and a belly that still looks flubby. I put on 25lbs during preg and am about 6 lbs away from my weight of 120lbs. Its not my weight but my bodyshape that looks gross now- i have love handles and have become a muffin top from previously pear shaped body!!!
I'm exclusively breast feeding and it seems like my stomach is going down- slowly but surely. I eat ~1800 cals a day with a good supply of milk. I would say don't do anything drastic, let nature work its way. Eat healthy and try to take walks/ get some exercise if you can. I've also heard always flexing your stomach will help it tone..but who knows!!
Thank you all...
I will try. There are days when I feel so ugly, but then I look at my 2 moths old daughter, and yes IT IS WORTH IT.
I will keep you all posted about my progress :)
Will I lose weight if I eat the same food over and over?
You can lose weight despite eating the same food day-after-day as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn. In fact, eating the... Read more
