Pregnant with a question - no not trying to lose weight...
I have been on the path to health and wellness since last Christmas. I've lost 75 lbs so far (still a long way from goal), but found out about 10 days ago that I am pregnant - YAY (we want more children). Anyone I am wondering if anyone became pregnant while on their weight loss journey? How did you transition yourself from trying to lose weight to just keeping a healthy lifestyle? I haven't made any changes yet (keeping 1400 cals a day and walking daily, until my first obgyn appt. on Thursday. I'm just having a hard time mentally adjusting to the fact that my weight will go up at least some (hoping to limit it to 20 lbs total). Any advice, encouragement would be great!
First of all, congratulations on losing 75lbs! That's excellent! I wish I was that far along to my goal. Good for you!
You may find you need to add a few more calories to your diet just because your calorie expenditure has gone up(making that beautiful baby). I'd talk to your obgyn about that part. I don't know what your previous pregnancy was like but walking should be fine so long as you don't overdo it. Again, your obgyn would be a better source of knowledge than I am....
Because you've lost weight you're already starting this pregnancy healthier than the last; which is something to be awfully proud of! As for the weight gain during pregnancy: think of it as making room for a new life and not about moving up on the scale. If I remember correctly about 10lbs of weight is fluid and placenta, add another 7lbs (on average) for baby and you have at least a 17lb "gain" just for baby. As this is a second pregnancy, if you're like me, you may find that you "pooch out" or show quicker than the first.
Congratulations and keep us posted! ~Erica
I believe what is going to happen is you will have to increase your calories to your BMR. I am guessing the 1400 is what your dieting calories were...you will probably have to put them back up to your BMR leve and another 200-300 after I think 12 or 16 weeks to add to your BMR for the baby. Up until 12 weeks your body doesn't really require extra calories because it is not building fat stores for the baby yet.
Also, 25lbs is the typical weight gain of the baby, placenta...fluid...etc. However that is assuming a typical 7lb baby also.
Definitly ask your doctor about what you should do.
Thanks for your replies. I think I am just having such a hard time because I don't want to lose track of my healthier lifestyle. I know I will have to increase cals (just waiting on input from Dr.) and gain weight (just nervous).
oh my! I'm in the same exact situation as you, although I'm not pregnant just yet. We are in the process of fertility treatments but I still have to transition from diet mode and it is so hard mentally! I know its what needs to happen, esp since I'm a tad low on bodyfat, but it's still so hard! Should I drop some workouts and eat less, eat more and keep working out............I just don't know what to do! I too don't want to abandon the healthy lifestyle I worked so hard to make habit.
My doc just postponed my cycle a month because I couldn't bring myself to gain some weight to prove I'm done dieting. Its rough.
Keep me posted how it works out for you, hopefully I'll be there soon myself!
Congrats and Good Luck!
Hey I'm in the same boat a s you too! I lost 15 pounds with a goal of losing 35 total, and low and behold, I'm pregnant! - Now this was 5 months ago - my main concern for the first couple of months was to be able to eat anything (hyperemisis - not fun) but now that it's starting to subside, and I got the wake up call of I gained 10 pounds in 1 1/2 months, I'm back to counting calories to gain a healthy amount of weight, healthy diet (no more drinking chocolate milk like it's going out of style). Trying to get my excercise regimine back up again - which has been hard for me because I have done nothing but sit on the couch/bed/hung over the toilet bowl for the last 4-5 months. Walking around the store seems to be a big feat for me these days! And I too am having a hard time knowing the numbers will be going up again. Even though I know they need to, and am doing all I can to make sure it's a healthy weight gain, it's still like sticker shock when I see the scale numbers. But, any weight gain 10lbs or 100lbs is goijng to be SOOOOO worth it to see that baby in our arms, so I'm **trying** to keep my perspective where it needs to be. More weight can come off after the baby is born. And your calorie count won't go up too much - between 300 - 500 more in the 2nd and 3rd trimester. I don't know if you need to up in the 1st trimester - never discussed that issue with my doctor for obvious reasons! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
Hi, first of all congratulations!!! Don't be nervous. If you lost 75 pounds that means you are a very focused person, you will not go out off track, don't worry. Focus now on diong what is right for your health and the baby, consult your doctor on what is the best course of action and enjoy the beauty of bringing a baby to life. After the baby is born you can ease back into your routine as soon as your doctor gives you the green light. Good Luck!!!
if you go to webmd they have a kind of break down on wiehgt gain for baby, it shows about how much wieght is a good gain plus it shows you what the gain is for. it might help to see why you need this extra wiehgt.
hope that helps
Thanks for the support! I did discuss all of my concerns with the obgyn and we decided 1600 - 1800 cals a day should be sufficient for me (based on what I have been doing 1200 - 1400, current size, and weight gain last pg.) My goal is to keep my weight gain to about 10 lbs. (please remember I am over 200 lbs and under dr's care). Also want to continue exercising daily (at least walking on the treadmill). I'm feeling much better and can't wait for this baby to grow and be born!
kendtangel - I read your profile - that's an awesome story! Hope you're doing well and able to get back into exercise.
ajjciir - thanks! I am doing better now. Very little getting sick to my stomach, and nothing the zofran can't handle on days I need it! With the help and encouragement of my husband, I've been able to get back into a much more relaxed excercise routine than I had been doing before I got pregnant, but that's all I can handle right now. I still can't get over how fast you can get out of shape!! 1600 - 1800 is what I aim for in a day too. Somedays I'm under, some days I'm over, but mostly I'm on target. We'll see where the weight roller coaster leads me in a month. Hopefully no more 10 pounds in a month! I hope you are feeling well, since most women at least get nauseus (sp?) their first trimester! I pray you have none, but if you do hang in there, those 3 months will be over before you know it! If you want to talk or just need a little encouragement, email me.
