I've been really sick lately and on pregnisone. I know it typically makes you retain sodium and therefore bloat, but I have gained 3 lbs after being on it for 5 days! I know this isn't fat, it's just water, but how do I make it go away? I'm really worried...I have prom in less than a week. I am barely eating (no appetite) even though I'm trying I'm probably not getting more than 800 calories a dayand I have been completely sedentary, I'm not really allowed to work out/I don't have any energy. What should I do to elminate this water weight and squeeze into my prom dress?

drink lots of water and eat something your body could be in starvation mode. if you eat your energy will come back too

steroids can make you gain weight as well

I don't think so...I have mono so that accounts for my lack of energy. Also I don't think starvation mode kicks in that quickly.

I'm bumping this because I REALLY have no idea what to do...I've gained almost 4 lbs already!

Go to a sauna or use one of those belt things that you wear to get rid of water weight.  I got one from Modell's but can't seem to find it on their website anywhere and can't think of the name of it.

Sweety, there isn't anything you can do about it right now that won't just make you sicker. You're not gaining weight because you're eating too much or being lazy - you're gaining weight because of the essential medication you're taking.  And you're going to have to make a choice - which would you prefer? To go to the prom ten pounds heavier than you would like to be... or to be too sick to go to the prom at all? There are only two things you should be doing this week - resting, and eating your 1200 calories a day whether you think you need/want them or not.

I was on prednisone for a year, and in 6 months I had gained 100lbs.  It is not all water--prednisone affects your metabolism, your energy, and I hate to tell you this, but it makes you ravenously hungry.  I would wake up at night, and the hunger pangs would be so bad it would physically hurt.  Make sure you eat small meals evey two to three hours, eat LOTS of fiber and drink LOTS of water.  I grind up flax seed in a coffee grinder and mix it with a little cinnamon and splenda; then I section an apple and shake it up--it is sooo good and a nice way to get about 15 gr of fiber in one sitting!  You can't just not eat, because prednisone will make you hold on to weight.  Good luck--I had mono too, and it is no fun.  I do hope you feel better, and enjoy your prom.

I have asthma and have had to take prednisone multiple times.  While in the hospital once I had to take it and I asked to be placed on a very low fat diet during my stay.  I ate only what they gave me which wasn't much and during that week I gained 7 pounds.  Prednisone is not something I elect to take even when a doctor recommends it.  With my asthma when I get sick now I take 4000 mg of vitamin c daily, drink lots of water and request antibiotics instead of taking the prednisone.  Typically they give me both antibiotics and prednisone and I fill the antibiotics and not the prednisone.  I haven't needed to take it yet.  Ask your doctor about alternatives.  It isn't just about the weight but read up on the drug and what it does to your body.

I've been on prednisone several times and, unfortunately, each time I gained weight.  My understanding is that prednisone changes your metabolism so you are going to gain weight pretty much no matter what.  The first time I gained 20+ pounds, the second 10+ pounds and the third probably about 5+.  I have found the following helps (but you will still gain weight) - the third time around I didn't eat meat (only fish), I went to the gym at least five times a week, usually doing some type of hour long aerobics class, I asked my family and boyfriend to help me realize when I was just grazing (prednisone makes you hungry and if you can be told you are just eating mindlessly it helps control it), and I tried to eat less junk food.  However, I will say by the third time around as opposed to the first time, I didn't eat meat anyway, I had been working out consistently for a year, and I had gone from about 135-125 in the past year before being put on prednisone again.  Oh yeah, one other thing, I gave up most alcohol too the third time and that helped.

I'm feeling pretty fortunate right now- I just got off of a 6 week stint of Prednisone and had no adverse side effects from it- I really liked it, it helped me immensely. I can feel my body going back to "normal" now though. I probably wouldn't have taken it had I read all of this first!

FAST WAY to lose a few inches of water weight!!!

Know now this is only water weight, and the only reason I'm even telling you about it is so you can fit into your prom dress without killing yourself on a crash diet. There is an old power-lifting trick that some soldiers use to get by a tape test. Before I tell you, you have to promise and absolutely swear that you will QUIT over restricting right this minute. That's just going to kill your energy and make you stay sicker, longer.

What you do is take some cortisone cream/spray (some people think hemmorhoid cream works best, I prefer Cortaid allergen spray) and rub it into your torso/buttocks/wherever is swollen. Then, wrap that area TIGHTLY with saran wrap. If you have to do it so tight that you can't breathe, quit now because saran wrap just can't help you! Leave the saran wrap on overnight, and remove in the morning. Try to go easy on the complex carbs and salt the day of, to prevent retaining all that water right back again.

If that still doesn't work for you, I have one word: spandex. Women all over this fine world have used support garments to provide a sleek sillhouette on special occasions. Slap some spandex on that butt, and dance until you drop!

Hi.  I'm new here, and the reason I've found this site is because I've been on steroids for a couple of months, now.  First, I was on a course of Prednisone for Pneumonia.  Then, they had me do another course because it turns out my nerves are being crushed by my vertebrae.  (Lots of fun!)  Now, once a month, I have to go get a shot in my spine and I believe it's a steroid, as well.

Of course, the side effect of all of these steroids is that I've gained probably 50 pounds in about 3 months.  None of my clothes fit, my feet and ankles are always PAINFULLY swollen, you can press your finger into my flesh and it leaves a DEEP indentation, and I'm really at my wit's end.  I also take Prozac and Imitrex and now I also take Lyrica as well.  I was prescribed Depakote, but refuse to take it because it is evil and made me feel dead.  I used to be exremely active, and ran 6-8 miles a day and did the stairmaster for an hour and took aerobic classes and lifted weights.  Every.Single.Day.   It was my therapy.  Now, I don't have the time that took because I have 3 teenaged children, and I'm a teacher.  As a teacher, I'm fairly active all day because I teach 4th graders.  I pretty much never sit down.  I am a very picky eater, and don't eat much.  I don't starve myself, but I am not a big eater.  Because of my neck and the nerves, I have to be careful with any exercise and make sure it doesn't jolt my neck or spine.  I LOVE yoga, and I have a treadmill.  When I start a diet I immediately begin obsessing about food.  If I'm not on a diet, I couldn't care less about food...I'd rather eat ice. I've done weight watchers, and it worked, but I was in my workout fiend period, so that was a large part of it.  I have a small to medium frame and am 5'2" tall.  I'm 42 years old, and have entered menopause, as well.  I have a degenerative nerve/movement disorder so sometimes I'm unable to walk straight or use one of my arms and hand.

Okay.  So, I'm a nightmare.  Any suggestions?  Does Lyrica make you retain water?  I began retaining and swelling BEFORE the Lyrica, but seriously...all of the fat on my body moved itself to my abdomen and I look ab out 8 months pregnant.
