Was Not Prepared for TV Analog to Digital Switch

Quote  |  Reply

And I've been enjoying the quiet!

We'll probably be connecting everything up this weekend but I was just wondering how many other people have been without TV this past week.

Seriously???????????????

You have a computer and internet connection...but no updated/digital tv? Didn't even bother to purchase the converter thingy?  That is just......why? I must be so ignorant..so self engrossed...so upper class...so everything else...and I apologize for sounding so but it puzzles me why anyone would have the technology and actually pay for technology [ie:internet] and want tv/cable but not have the technology..and then WAIT until it's gone...to go and get it.

eh...whatever. hope it all works out for ya!

I'm not sure I understand your post fitnessgirll.

We purchased the converter box a while ago and when we connected up ( albeit the last day) we found our antenna didn't pick up the new signal.  So we had to buy some extra cable and hubby will be working on that this weekend.

Geesh even my kids aren't as irritated as you seem to be.

I was just wondering if anyone else is enjoying a (temporary) loss of the boob tube?

I was prepared because I don't live in a cave.

fitnessgirll and spirochete I think you are quite rude. Not everybody has digital TVs or cable, some people cannot afford either and some people just do not care for them.

rufus_k I like your attitude, there are so many things that a family can do beside watching TV. My daughter, who is in college, has not had a TV for the last 2 years and she does not miss it at all. The internet allows her to keep up with news and occasionally stream a favorite TV show.

As for me, I was ready for the switch, but I have read several posts on freecycle about people not ready and looking for the digital converters. So you definitively are not alone.

I am just happy those annoying reminders of the impending switch are over. If not prepared after over a year of reminders and a postponement of the switch day then it was by laziness not by ambush.

I figured this was going to be someone complaining about how boring their life is now that they're temporarily out of TV. And I probably wouldn't have left a very nice comment lol.

GLAD you are enjoying it though!!! We don't even have cable. I decided it was too expensive, so I cancelled it. And I don't miss it at all. I much prefer not having it :]

I bought the converter box and it's one huge pain--channels coming in all pixelated or losing their signals altogether. So far it seems like a monumental waste.

Relax. It's a discussion about TV.

TV or not TV.  That was the question.

Whether or not I'm lazy, live in a cave or just plain puzzling that's another matter!

We bought a new digital tv several months ago to replace the analog in the family room. But we have an old analog, no converter, in the bedroom. And it's staying off. No more tv in the bedroom, best thing ever.

I am prepared but as yet we still have analog up here they are slowly switching off starting south and heading north.

The biggest problem seems to be that many highland areas just can not get a signal even if they do have boosters etc, so i would think there are many people who will have no tv shortly. We still have areas which can't get Internet, and areas which can only get dial up and loads of areas in which mobile reception is patchy or non existent......to many mountains! I say get the JCB's out and level the place then everyone can have everything :D

I have not had a TV since 1999. Although my husband (then boyfriend) and I had to live with a few people for a few months that did. Now I can't really stand the noise in my own home. I don't mind it at other people's house but I just find it obtrusive in my personal space.

I love music though, so that's always on and I think my neighbours would rather I had a TV instead of a good sound system.  And I have a fast enough internet connection, so with a few clicks I can watch certain shows, like the Peep Show, The Universe, etc. I do miss PBS sometimes but I'm not in America anymore anyway, and like everything else, I'm sure its changed.

Enjoy the Silence...

Haven't had a TV since December.  Don't miss it.

Of course, having an internet connection that screams helps in that regard. :D

Fitnessgirl - maybe TV is not rufus' highest priority?

Your shock shocks me.

ETA mondays suck and the space beneath her post made me think that was the last and only reply. LOL

Actually there are quite a few rural areas in the US that didn't have the infrastructure in place to accomodate the switch. It will cost a lot of money to upgrade those areas, and some counties don't have the dough. Kinda sucks, IMO.

Yes, yes yes. I got rid of the TV in my bedroom quite a few years ago. I will never ever have another TV in my bedroom.

 Whatever..

I am shocked that people who WANT TV were not prepared for the switch and thus complain about it...apparently, I misunderstood the OP since she purposefully decided not to switch over.

I am a technology addict and admit I have little understanding of people who live in the 'dark'. But, it's all cool...whatever floats ya boat..

I've never had a TV in my bedroom, and if I have my way... I never will.  Once in the while the DH lobbies for one, but so far I have stood my ground.

The bedroom is for sleeping and for fun times.  Not watching TV!

no excuse for my overreaction so.. whatever.
