I try to eat as much whole grain and fresh vegetables as I can, but it gives me lots of gas. Do you have any suggestions?
Answer
As people eat more fiber, they often experience gas. Gas is created when undigested carbohydrate reaches the large intestine where it is broken down by harmless bacteria. The body usually adapts to a high-fiber diet within three weeks, but until then, take Beano®, a natural over-the-counter enzyme that helps to digest gassy food. To eliminate gas completely, take one or three Beano® tablets with the first bite of food at a meal. Beano® is safe to take before eating any gassy food. You could also try taking a probiotic culture, like Dannon Activia yogurt or supplements, such as Vidazorb or Culturelle, for a few weeks to see if it helps. If nothing works, discuss your symptoms with a doctor who may order diagnostic tests.
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
