How to prevent post-anorexia binge eating disorder!
Hi all-
I have mentioned this before but I have a sister who has suffered with anorexia this past year and is just recently making the steps toward recovery and currently trying to gain weight. She is doing quite well but has recently voiced some concerns she has had with me and I was wondering if any of you could help out with some advice for her.
She is refeeding now and trying to gain weight like I mentioned earlier, and obviously to do this she has to eat quite a bit. She has found that she loves eating this much after being deprived for so long and doesn't struggle to get the daily calories she needs to gain weight. But because of this, she has said that the major thing that holds her back from recovery is the fear of becoming used to this and developing a binge eating disorder. I looked it up and have found numerous situations where in fact people who had anorexia now have problems with bingeing so I guess my sister has a pretty legit worry.
How should I reassure her and help her not develop bingeing behaviors?
I am extremely skeptical that this is your "sister" that is recovering. Still. It is normal for initial recovery to include some episodes of overeating as it is the body's reaction to having been starved so long. It stops but only if you consistently eat.
Well this is her sister on her account but whatever.. that isn't important, thanks for the advice
She should go to a therapist. I had post-anorexial bingeing and it is the worst thing that I have ever experienced. Only a therapist at foreverfamily has been able to help me. You must resolve the root problems.
