I am 15 years old and have been biting my nails my whole life. Not just nibbling on them, i bite them until they bleed. They constantly hurt. I was doing so well trying to stop and let them grow and put gel tips on. When the tipscame off the hewing started again.

How did yu guys stop?

I used to be a chronic nail biter - but I can't consciously remember doing anything to make myself stop.  I just eventually grew out of it, I guess.

If it's an oral fixation, you might try chewing gum.

i used to bite my nails like it was my job. then i got SO sick of them being all nasty and snaggy and gross. so basically, i realized if i stopped biting i could grow nice nails! now,  i can't even IMAGINE biting them!

if you've still got the urge...i'm not really sure what you can do...have you thought of trying some of that nasty tasting stuff they make to keep you from doing it? what about painting your real nails (even if they are real short)?

My mom pestered me for years to stop biting my nails (I was also a thumb-sucker until the 1st grade when I had to get a dental appliance that forced me to stop).  We tried everything, but nothing worked.  By the time I got to my senior year in high school, I was so sick of my stubby, ugly fingers that I forced myself to quit.  I sometimes catch myself wanting to bite them (I'm 27 now), especially if one is broken and I don't have any clippers or file handy, but I usually stop myself before I do it.  My husband (same age) stopped biting his in the last year or so.  He hated the way his looked too and also how much it would hurt when he was cooking something and the juices got into the open cuts.  I think you just have to be in the right mindset for it.

What if you try not biting one hand (or even just one finger).  Once you've been successful with one, move to the next one and so on until you're completely done.  I'm at the point now that I love the clicking noise of my long-ish nails on things (like my computer keyboard) and not having them makes me feel awkward.

I used to bite my nails and had the same problem! I finally decided to stop and so I went and got a manicure to make my nails look nice and also to help them grow faster. My nails looked so nice I didn't want to ruin it by biting them! I also bought a bunch of neat nail polish colors and always color my nails! However, I have a new problem, now instead of biting my nails, I chip off the nailpolish. I guess chipping the nailpolish is a better habit though! Either way my nails still look 10000 times better than before!
I've ALWAYS been a ridiculous nailbiter.
I got my wisdom teeth out over Thanksgiving break & couldn't chew anything- including my nails. It completely killed the habit. My recovery was rougher than most people's, & I'm still at a point where it would hurt if I tried to bite them, but I actually haven't even been trying. crazy what'll kick the habit, huh? haha.

I found I used to bite them when I was bored [during the summer they'd be gorgeous, but by the first week of school they were always stubs haha], so maybe try to occupy your hands with something else when you find yourself about to chew.
