Problems after dog spaying
I got my dog spayed on Friday afternoon. She kept me up all night crying so I didn't get any sleep. She seemed fine yesterday though she didn't eat or drink much (just a few bites of food and went to her waterbowl maybe 2-3 times). Today (it's now 3a Sunday where I am) she didn't eat anything and didn't drink anything. She wouldn't take the pain meds this morning but took them tonight around 1115p mixed with water. Two minutes later she threw up. In the pan of about 10-15 minutes she threw up 4 times (all times were a weird greenish color). Now it's almost 3a and she just threw up all over my bed. Perhaps it's paranoia or the fact that I've gotten no sleep the last two days but is this normal? There's no "emergency vet" I can call here and the vet who did the surgery isn't open until 10a...
I've googled stuff online but I can't find much of anything except for normal symptoms for the same day of surgery. I guess my main concern is dehydration since she hasn't drank anything but is still throwing up...
My mom's dog threw up a lot when she was spayed too. She also refused to eat and drink for a few days, she just let her sleep and kept food and water nearby in case she wanted some. She got better in about 4-5 days and was running around like normal.
Has she eaten any grass or plants? Some dogs do that when their belly is upset (pain meds with no food can do that) and it'll look green. Are any of her kibbles green? That can do it too.
Have you tried feeding her her pain meds in some people food? Like stuffed into some hamburger or cheese? They very rarely deny "people" food.
I can't even tell you the last time I saw grass. haha There's none anywhere near my house... just asphalt. She only ate a bit of food yesterday and it's just brown colored. Last night she took her pain meds mixed it peanut butter but wouldn't touch it this morning. I'm hoping it's just the pain meds that made her throw up tonight but the fact that she did it again 4 hours later when the pain meds had no time to absorb into her system (it was literally 2 minutes after she took them that she got sick) that has me worried. I've never had to deal with spaying a dog.
I feel like a giant baby freaking out like this. haha
Ali, it's not normal I would call the vet as soon as you can. I have had many animals undergo this operation from females to males horses, dogs and cats and none of them have ever reacted like this.
I did have one who was still not right 3 days later when i called the vet he took her in right away turned out she had managed to get a small infection inside the wound and she required antibiotics.
Judging where you live i think you are right to be concerned about dehydration, i suspect she is being sick with the painkillers because she isn't eating they will be irritating her stomach.
I would take her back to the vet!
Thanks. I'm calling as soon as I wake up. I'll probably have to call in to work tomorrow if the vet wants me to bring her in because I have no time to take her before work and the vet is closed by the time I finish teaching.
She's banned from my bed for the rest of the night. Now she's just laying on the mat outside my bathroom door so hopefully the vomiting will stop for tonight at least.
What pain killer is she on? Is it Rimadyl?
oh ali, i'm so sorry your puppeh isn't feeling all that great yet. I TOTALLY agree with andy. That isn't normal.
When you get off work (since the vet will already be closed) just make sure she's as comfortable as possible. If you have to... feed her a little bit of 'people' food so that she at least has something in her belly... that's also a good time to hide her pain pill. hide it in a piece of cheese or something. dogs wont normally take the pill because it tastes so foul.... BUT not if you hide it in 'people' food, hehe... they're suckers like that!
When I had my pup spayed, she didn't really feel like eating much either... she mostly bummed around most of the day.... but on the second day, she was running and playing like nothing had ever happened. I even had to make her come back in the house and relax a little because I was afraid that she would hurt herself.
please update us when you're able to take her back to the vet.
I hope that your little sport starts feeling better really REALLY soon.
I really hope your pup feels better. And it's perfectly normal to be freaking out, spaying as more invasive than neutering. My dog, after being neutered, was running around like nothing happened, and both my mom's dogs, females, were out of it for a few days. Poor girlie dogs.
Hopefully the vets give you some meds to stop her from throwing up (hopefully nothing else is wrong, just sick from surgery) so she can take her meds and eat again properly.
Chicken broth might get her to drink a little.
I'm not sure what the name of the pain killer is. The vet wasn't there when I picked her up because it was so late and I was too angry to ask because of something else that happened.
She took the medicine (which they crush up here to make it easier to give your dog) with peanut butter the day before yesterday. She actually doesn't appear to be in much pain (discomfort yes, but she's not constantly crying or whining) and asides from a small yelp if I pick her up wrong when I have to carry her down the stairs to the bathroom, she hasn't made any more noises since the first day. It's now the third morning (6a) and she hasn't thrown up anymore. I just took her out to the bathroom and she drank some water when we came back... she wanted to drink a lot but I took the dish away out of fear she'd throw up again.
Thanks so much everyone. :) I'll be able to call the vet in a few hours.
Yay! I'm glad she's drinking. Doggies (and animals in general) are far more resilient than we give them credit for. ;D
My guess is the pain meds made her throw up and she wasn't eating because she was in pain/discomfort because she wasn't taking the pain meds. I'm glad she's drinking though. ;D
Yeah Ali, I just neautered my dog, and the vet said before I took him home to call immediately if he gets sick, or has a loose stool, or has an uninterest in food, or anything abnormal. I was fortunate however, becuase he was just fine. let us know if your puppy is ok
also, different dogs have different thresholds of pain. My big boy never acted like anything was different, but I had a dog before who would yelp, whine, or bellow if she even got poked by a pine cone! lol
Well, I called the vet and he said it's definitely not normal and to bring her in now. I'll be headed there soon so hopefully everything is ok...
Thanks again for the help!
I have my fingers crossed for you and your poochie. ![]()

Keep us informed about your dog and get in touch with that vet if she's not absolutely ok. Peanut butter is our favorite for smearing on pills. Our dogs like it so much that they swallow it down and never separate it from the pill and then spit it out while they eat the cheese, weiner, bit of bread. or such. None of our dogs have ever refused peanut butter if it wasn't really sick.
My pup is allergic to peanut butter :( But he loves cheese!
She was perky like her usual self this morning but the vet is keeping her for the day to observe her. Her mixed some chicken with dog food and she ate a little at the office but he said he's more concerned about her not drinking so they're going to try to get fluids in her and give her an IV if necessary. If there are no more problems, I'll pick her up after work. Best thing is he's doing this all for free...
poor wee thing. you too, ali.
Free, nice at least. :) I always feel so sad when I have to leave them at the vets...
I hope she bounces back quickly, she's sooo freakin cute.
Whatever was going on last night is apparently over. The vet said she ate like crazy there today and drank plenty of water. I've finally got her home and she's acting like her normal self now. I feel like a fool for being so worried but at least she's ok.
Thanks again. :)

I am glad the pup is OK. But you would feel more a fool if you ignored her symptoms and it was something serious. Worrying is what good puppy moms do!
