Processed Foods?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm trying to cut processed foods out of my diet, but I'm a bit confused as to what all is considered "processed".

I know that things like potato chips, Ramen noodles, and pre-packaged cookies and cakes are processed, but what else?  Is breakfast cereal like Total or All Bran processed? How about frozen vegetables?

What exactly does processed mean?

What you need to avoid is anything that says "enriched" or "hydrogenated" or "partially-hydrogenated."  These are all methods of processing.  Corn syrup is formulated by processing, as is white sugar... Cane Sugar is good and so is honey.  Butter is much better than margarine.

Frozen vegetables are okay.  All Bran contains high fructose corn syrup.  Total is a better option, even though it contains sugar (corn syrup is worse).

Be careful of labels that say "No Trans Fats."  This doesn't necessarily mean no trans fats.  It just means there is less than .5 grams per serving.

processed foods are the ones that have preservatives. If its canned or cooked / half cooked and frozen, yes its processed. When it comes to enriched, bread is better enriched than not.
Like bigpink, I've been trying to eat better.  I do slip quite a bit, but when it comes to eating healthy, I don't expect to get much nourishment from processed food, but like I said I do still eat them, knowing all processed foods are junk food.

So, I'm not an expert, but I do know with bread or pasta, if it's not made with whole grains, it's enriched.  Whole grain is far more nourishing than enriched.  Never is enriched better.  It just makes it sound like they've made it healthy, but all enriched bread is depleted of necessary nutrients.
