Fitness Clubbing for 3 hours = 900 calories? Jul 18 2009

Thanks for your replies - I guess I will be going out more after all!

I tend to drink rum or vodka with diet coke, which I can keep 500 - 700 calories. With all the danicng, it seems that I am burning off all the alcohol calories, provided I don't binge when I get back.

Age: 18 years

height: 5 foot 4 (and a half!)

Current Weight: 145lb

Target Weight: 130lb

Have a history of eating disordered behaviour. Now a hardcore binge eater/drinker. in other words, looking for a shoulder to cry on and tell me i'm acting like a wimp. Anyone up to the challenge?

p.s. I know I have a healthy BMI but I often get out of breath or feel ill and my family are all quite small, which suggests to me that my natural weight is not this high. I am currently eating and drinking between 2,500 and 3,500kcals a day (approximately) but maintaining this weight. Can I say HELP?

I wouldn't normally eat the naked cutlets raw because of the texture, but they hold up really well to sauces.

Most of the time I eat the cutlets in a tomato based stew with lots of veggies. They go well in caseroles too, or they go brilliantly in rissotto.

My meat eating family will hapily eat quorn, but they contain egg and are therefore not vegan.

Treat it like tofu really, just add it to your favourite reciepes.

In the UK you can get slices of 'luncheon' meat quorn but I don't like them much.

The taste is very salty, but they have a good texture.

ENJOY!

Mix together lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper.

Finely chop a red onion and leave in the dressing.

Arrange some lettuce on a plate, followed by tomato slices and cucumber slices.

Add some feta cheese in big slices.

Scatter over some black kalamata olives.

Drizzle over the dressing and the slightly marinated onion.

YUM!

Thanks, thats great guys!

The Daily Plate has all the nutritional info that I need.

My favourite is Duvel, so that info was very helpful.

It's reassuring to know that Leffe has only 126cals!

Nope - I'm located in Brighton and I have only been given outpatient treatment as I was deemed well enough to re-feed myself.

Medical intervention is a key part of recovery. You sound like you are nervous about this clinic but trust me, you have nothing to worry about. Everyone you meet will be supportive and help you to overcome your ED.

One thing I really feel I missed out on was ED friends! I have no-one to talk to in the same situation as me (although I have a lot of sympathisers). So maybe you will meet some new friends at the clinic.

Generally, at an ED clinic for the first time you are met by many, many doctors who will ask you questions about the symptoms of your ED...you may be suprised at how many symptoms you have.

During some point in the session, they tend to calculate your BMI and show it to you, so that it is clear how you are in medical danger.

My advice is to answer everything as honestly as possible, no matter how painful it is. You have no idea how good you will feel to get all your intense emotions out, as they will have centered around your ED.

Then, with your opinions and personality in mind, they will help to map out a recovery plan for you. They may choose to put you in inpatient treatment, or they may choose to refer you to councilling services. Gaining weight will only be part of the treatment, as they will also aim to improve your feelings towards food and self esteem.

Good Luck! You can do it!

You sound just like me, height/weight wise...however with one big difference: I lost the weight WHILE I was at school.

I think that the responses saying "no average teenager will be able to comprehend the complexity of an eating disorder" are sad. Of course people have empathy and during this period I realised how many people can be actively helpful.

The worst thing is people who barely know you making comments or assumptions. That, and everyone will try and feed you CONSTANTLY! Be prepared to show your face, be brave and stand up for every other person with an ED out there...

Also, bear in mind that ED's are very, very common amongst your age group. When I began to look severly anorexic, many people confided in me just how difficult their relationship with food is. I found out that a close friend was bulimic and many people admitted they had a difficult past. Recently, at my college (of around 1,600) there are pleanty of girls who look unnaturally skinny.

My message? Be brave. You will learn something from it. At the end of the day, people will sympathise with you rather than judging you for an eating disorder that you have CHOSEN to recover from.

Healthy black bean tacos

Chop tomatoes, chilli, garlic, red onion, corriander and the juice of half a lime. Leave to marinate.

In a blender, combine a tin of beans (black, kidney, whatever!) with 1 tbsp corriander spice, 1 tbsp cumin and tabasco sauce. Add in more corriander leaves and the juice from the other half of the lime.

Then, its just a case of getting a tortilla, spreading on the bean paste, topping with the salsa and some grated cheese before putting them in the oven for a few minutes

Serve with low fat sour cream, avacado and a green salad.

Add jalapenos in brine for extra spice!

This tended to happen to me when I was scared/uncomfortable around the food...my advice is to let yourself eat EVERYTHING you want at a mealtime/accessible time.

However, if you often find yourself in uncomfortable situations alone, often the natural reaction is to eat - its a survival instinct! I often end up doing this whilst babysitting, so I tend to plan a meal/snack that I can have.

Try and think about the food that you want in advance, not overly obbessing, but it can help to think about what you really want to eat so that you feel satisfied.

DONT feel bad about wanting more food - its nessesary for you to gain weight and when you are at a more normal weight you will not feel the same way you do towards food that you do at the moment.

DONT make cutbacks the next day, this just makes binges even more irressistable and you will end up even more upset and anxious around food.

DONT underestimate the size of a binge - when I first started recovering from anorexia, I thought a handful of cereal and a nut was a binge! I remember one time I tried to look up the calorie count of A SINGLE CRISP!

These binges are unlikely to make any real change to your weight, only you can do that through sensible, balanced eating. Always remember, it takes over 3500 cals a week to put on one lb!

Here is the best reciepe for porridge EVER:

25g porridge oats

1/2 cup skim milk

1 tbsp cinnamon

*cook*

add a grated apple

*cook*

finish off with chopped nuts (brazil are my favourite), brown sugar (just a little tsp) and some more colourful fruit to brighten up the dish...either berries of chopped stone fruit like peaches.

Yes, its high in calories but it makes a HUGE portion and will keep you full for hours!

making sure your meal is colourful and varied will keep you interested...

It comes in at around 380cals

ENJOY!

They both go really well in rissotto, just fry an onion in olive oil for a few minutes, add rice + stock + veggies, keep stirring and cook for 20mins or so.

stir fry is another healthy option - oil, ginger, garlic, soy sauce.

Squash soup is delicious - use spices and add lentils!

They also both go really well in a coconut curry sauce, with chickpeas or lentils. Zucchini, bell pepper and mushroom do well together in a tomato based curry suace too.

Or you could roast them and serve lukewarm/cold with feta cheese or grilled halomi and pine nuts to make a delicious salad.

Lots of people like to make 'squash spaggetti' - check hungry girl for the reciepe.

personally, I love squash and I wonder where you got all of theese lovely ones from - I bought a manky butternut squash in the UK which had to be thrown away!

make sure she eats lots of dairy ; full of calcium and protein. Just check that its fat free. Frozen yogurt will help with the sweet cravings. beans are a great source of protein, filling and have that 'carby' texture that will appeal. If you cook for her, gradually introduce vegetables, especially into the main meal. if you make her delicious bean wraps, shes not going to feel as inclined to waste her energy picking out the vegetables she doesn't like. try seeds as well as nuts - seed mixes can easily be added to salads, soups ect to up the protein content. If she eats lots of carbohydrates, make sure they are the 'good' kind, i.e. complex carbohydrates - theese keep you fuller for longer. Take her to health food store and let her choose foods that she will like. Replace the sweets in the house with a large variety of fruit - don't just stick to apples oranges and bannas. Tropical fruit or berries has much more appeal, visually as well. and dont forget the teenage fave of peanut butter is a great protein source - just watch the cals.

make sure that you are getting enough protein and fats in your diet...living off vast quantities of low cal food is a sure fire way to create the thinking pattern behind a binge. Make sure that your meals are of an ordinary size and include lean protein and healthy fats, which will help to keep both your mind and body satisfied. Give yourself a treat every other day, so you don't feel the need to binge. Choose a favourite food, mesure out a sensible portion and then sit back and savour it. Remember, binging on low calorie foods may keep you trim, but its not giving you adequate calories or nutrition, and its clearly not satisifying you.

If you do feel a binge coming on, occupy your mouth - drink a cup of tea or ice water, chew gum or suck on sugar free sweets. Any binging behaviour is bad behaviour. Your body shouldn't have to struggle for nutrition.
