I've been tracking with livestrong.com for a few weeks now, but decided to go back to caloriecount.

Livestrong lets you export your numbers as an excel file, is there any way to import this file into caloriecount?

Not as of right now, but that's a fantastic feature request and we'll add it to our road map. Welcome back!

for Tuesday 6 March, the analysis page shows output at 1900 and intake at 1471 with net cals as -429.

The food log shows 1471 of 1300 cals and a burn meter of 1900.

The 'old' dashboard shows 740 of 1300 cals and activity of 1351 of 1900 cals.  The date in the water log is 6 March, and the activity rate of 1900 seems to indicate that the data is for 6 March (today's should be different) but why wouldn't I have an activity level of "1900 of 1900" if that's what I burned?  and why does it think I only ate 740 calories?  I'm mystified.

And the new dashboard... well, everyone else said it better than I would.

The date in the water logger only affects the water logger. The eat meter and the burn meter in the old dashboard don't allow browsing by date. If you need to review past dates, you can do that on the food log or the analysis page. This has always been like that and did not change with the recent update.

So to answer your question: you are comparing the dashboard data from March 7th with the Analysis data from March 6th.

this is just NOT useful at all!  I've been using cc for ages... and it has been very helpful... but now I can't figure out how many calories I have burned and the analysis is giving me info which isn't accurate.  The numbers in the analysis don't match the dashboard.  I tried setting it back to the old dashboard but the numbers still don't tally up and I can't figure out whether I'm looking at todays' numbers or yesterdays' numbers.

So - neither the new nor the old dashboard is working right and I can't go to the analysis page for accurate info either.

Just went through your account and it all seems to add up. Can you point out the specific problem you're having? (Feel free to focus on the old dashboard as we're trying to troubleshoot this).

Quick update on what we've been working on for the dashboard page:

  • Updates to the new method (remaining calories):
    - Adding back an exposed version of the water logger
    - Adding a date widget that allows you to see the dashboard values for different days

    Preview of the new method

  • Updates to the old method (net calories):
    - You'll continue to be able to access the old method in the old design
    - In addition, you'll also be able to access the old method in the new design

    Preview of the old method

As soon as those additions go live, we'll switch to the analysis page.

Personally as one who calorie cycles daily net deficits range through out the week, on the old dash I know my minimum intake is 1200 cals and my target is 1500 but I range usually 1300-1600 with my food meter, and try for 1800-2000 total cal for activity meter (set at sedentary and log activities) in the day, how would I work that with the new dash (so I eat at a deficit and burn for a deficit and cycle cals and cals burned (so I may never zero out and more likely be under and over all week))? Usually I just subtract with the old dash (and get an estimate on my net cals) and see how I can plan the rest of the day.

I am glad you're bringing up calorie cycling; that is one of the techniques that can be solved a lot better with the "zeroing out" method. One of the tools we're working on is the ability to specify different calorie targets for individual days of the week. You can't do that elegantly with net calories (as you said, you have to follow your approach above, as opposed to making it a system tool). There are also other interesting ideas, such as adjusting the next day's calorie target based on the past day's outcome. All of these ideas depend on our ability to suggest/set/modify calorie targets, which in the old approach are not a part of the calorie balance equation.

Makes me feel like if I eat 1600, I'm going to gain weight rather than still probably being net -500. I used to be a winner and now I feel like a chore.

Agree, the old system is better in "making you feel better" about missing your goals. And I am not disputing the power of visual motivation. So if that outweighs the risks for you of having a lower level of numerical accuracy, go for it!

I also dislike the new dashboard, but I especially HATE the new analysis graph.

Still reviewing the analysis graph and making sure that it's working as it should. Will start that conversation in a bit, and definitely open to change if it makes sense. (But as always, you can just simply use the old approach, which will leave the analysis completely unchanged.)

Your whole argument for changing things seems rather flawed. Yes, the estimates of calories burned at rest are just that, estimates. I think that is well understood. However, with this new system, you are still relying on those estimates to log calorie burned during activities and to come up with calorie target in the first place. So you are not making the system any more accurate, you are simply hiding the estimates.

I wish I could agree with you, but here's the reality: the calories at rest are dependent on your 1) gender, weight, and "body surface area," plus 2) your specified activity level, and 3) they also change with the burned calories that you explicitly specify (such as when logging 30min of jogging). Having reviewed hundreds of accounts over the last couple of years, I can tell you that 2) is often incorrectly selected, and 3) is insufficiently researched and represents our best guess.

In contrast, calories burned during activities only depend on the parameters under 1). Trust me, we're not suggesting the new approach for any other reason other than knowing that it's actually more accurate. That said, happy to let you use whichever approach you prefer.

Let me take you through an example that will prove that the new method will not lead to a different weight loss rate than the old method - assuming your calorie target is set correctly.

Sample user: You ate 1800 calories, your daily burn rate (ie: activity level = sedentary, gender = male, weight = 180lbs, height = 6'0") is 2000 calories, and you also logged an additional 300 calories for your early morning run. Your calorie target is set to 1500 calories.

Old system: (2000+300) - 1800 = 500 net calories.
New system: (1800-300) - 1500 = 0 remaining calories.

So is 500 net calories equal to 0 remaining calories? It is. The way we calculated your calorie target when you first set up your account is by assuming that you want to lose one pound per week. This would require you to burn 3500 calories per week, which is the equivalent of a 500 net calories daily deficit.

There are many other issues that have been brought up and I will address them all, but we have to start somewhere so let's first focus on the dashboard page. Once we (hopefully) agree that the new dashboard page will be guiding you to lose weight at the same rate as the old page, we can then move on to the next issue (ie: the analysis page). So please, let's just focus on the numbers above for now - thanks!

I understand it, but I just don't care for it. Are we assuming everyone wans a 500 calorie deficit, or are we trying to kind of set a standard that higher deficits are unhealthy? I do focus a lot on my deficit, but I don't starve to get there. Some of us wan to loose 10 pounds, some want to loose 200 pounds. 1,000 calorie deficit will only land you at 2 pounds a week, which is not unhealthy. So now we loose the flexibility. Also, if its about health and safety, which i think it should be, it should be less about 2 pounds a week and more about overall percentage lost. We are all different shapes and sizes.

I just changed my target calories to my current BMR and hope to keep track of my deficit easier that way. I will sacrficce the joy of seeing the box turn green when I hit 1200 calories for the day... I really enjoy making all my boxes green. LOL, but I will adjust.

THIS. YES.

I am glad we're having this conversation because it shows me that it's just a question of understanding the concept. So - no, it's not correct that we're forcing you to have a 500 calorie deficit. 500 is just our default value, and you can increase it to 600 by lowering your automatically calculated calorie target by 100 calories (or whatever you're looking for). This can be done in account settings.

We're ok with keeping the old system as an option, but please make sure to check out the new one as well every once in a while, because I believe that the above discussion proves that this is all just a question of presentation and over time we'll get it right and easy to understand.

I think for someone who has opted out of Calorie Camp, that link to go back to the old view is not available.

I too have the suspicion that we're dealing with a couple of bugs that are affecting the toggle link and the analysis values. We're checking everything as we speak and will update you.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the feedback. Let me start by saying that we'll make this work for everyone. It might be by either keeping the two versions forever, or by making the new one work flawlessly, or by switching back to the old one as the site's default.

So with that out of the way, I will leave the rest of the conversation between you and our team in Rachel's hands, because she's a lot more knowledgable in nutrition than I am. Rest assured that Rachel will make sure to listen and understand your concerns and the rest of our team will make sure to make any changes that we all agree on.

I'd also like to remind everyone that change is always difficult to accept, but sometimes it might lead to better things. Just keep your minds open and try to understand where we're coming from (Rachel has mentioned the inaccuracy issues with the old method and I am sure she'll expand on that more), and we'll do that same for you.

Igor, a couple people I'm supporting have been eating less than 1,200 calories and their reports are still showing up.  I thought you couldn't post your reports unless you ate at least 1,200 calories?

And, sorry to keep beating this drum, but...I feel like people need to learn that their caloric goal should increase on days that they exercise.  The eat meter thing that shows up on my dashboard turns red when I have exceeded 1750 calories (my "non workout days" goal), even if I have logged 500 calories worth of exercise.  However, if I only ate the 1,750 for that day, I'd end up with a deficit of 700+ calories.  I think people are focusing on that caloric goal and not realizing that if they are logging exercise they should eat more to account for that.  And what i'm seeing as a result is people averaging 1,000 as a deficit, and then going on an eating frenzy one day because they're so hungry.  And then they get all down on themselves.  If that eat meter number increased when you logged exercise, I think that would help matters.

Showing up under "Everyone" or under "Supporting/Supporters"? We're only filtering from Everyone; it makes sense that if there's someone you care about you get to see them on their good and bad days.

Regarding the burn meter - we're in the middle of reworking that product so you should see improvements soon.

No problem. We're continuing to work on improving the refund process and we'll get it to be 100% automated. In the meantime, if anyone has any problems, don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Hey everyone, just wanted to announce a quick change that you'll be seeing over the next couple of hours.

Short version: we're making it easier now for people who don't like the social aspects of the Calorie Camp to still have access to some of the camp features such as goals, points, and rewards.

Long version: Since early January, there have been a number of different ways to experience the camp:

  1. You can opt out of the camp on your dashboard, which then also removed the camp integration from the Day Complete feature (see this option in your account settings page).
  2. You can leave the camp on your dashboard, but you can disconnect the camp from the Day Complete feature (this option in account settings)
  3. If you leave the camp integration in the Day Complete feature but choose the "Don't share, just complete my day" option (see where you can find this link), this was the equivalent of not participating in the camp at all.
  4. With the camp integration active in the Day Complete feature, if you set the privacy to "Private" and then submitted your report (see this setting), your report was not shared with anyone, but your activities counted against your weekly requirements, goals, points, and rewards.
  5. Finally, with the same settings as under 4, but with the privacy set to "Public" (see this setting), your activities counted against your weekly requirements, goals, points, and rewards, and it was also visible to others who then had the chance to like your report or comment on it.

The change we're implementing affects the option #3 above. Going forward, this option will continue to send you to the analysis page, but your activities will still count towards your weekly requirements, goals, points, and rewards. There will be no change to the privacy - none of the above will be visible to anyone other than you.

We felt the need to make this change after having received a large number of questions regarding our users' weekly status. In many cases, our users were surprised to see that they were stuck on week 1 even though that had been logging and marking their days complete for several weeks. Apparently, it wasn't clear that in order to pass the weeks, you had the choose the option #4 instead of #3. We hope that this change will help in this instance.

Has anyone had a problem redeeming points?  I have tried to use mine to purchase a pair of shoes through Shoe Crush.  I put in my order on January 10th, and as of this date it is still "processing."  My credit card has been charged.  Yesterday I sent them an e-mail asking that they cancel my order & issue a credit on my card.  I have not heard anything.

I followed up on this and will tell you as soon as I hear back.

I think we should recieve notifications when someone comments on our daily report. Otherwise they're just left there.

This should be fixed now, but please let me know if it's still happening. The intended behavior is that you always get notifications for comments on your own reports. When you comment on others, you'll be notified when other people comment only if you checked the checkbox while commenting.

Just to update everyone - we're working on making the newsfeed more selective. Right now, you're seeing pretty much everyone's reports, as long as they met some bare minimum criteria. Our goal is to move towards views that will provide more options and will better suit everyone's needs. Unfortunately, it's turning out to be a sizable engineering challenge so it might take us a bit before we can roll it out.
