Igor, a couple people I'm supporting have been eating less than 1,200 calories and their reports are still showing up.  I thought you couldn't post your reports unless you ate at least 1,200 calories?

And, sorry to keep beating this drum, but...I feel like people need to learn that their caloric goal should increase on days that they exercise.  The eat meter thing that shows up on my dashboard turns red when I have exceeded 1750 calories (my "non workout days" goal), even if I have logged 500 calories worth of exercise.  However, if I only ate the 1,750 for that day, I'd end up with a deficit of 700+ calories.  I think people are focusing on that caloric goal and not realizing that if they are logging exercise they should eat more to account for that.  And what i'm seeing as a result is people averaging 1,000 as a deficit, and then going on an eating frenzy one day because they're so hungry.  And then they get all down on themselves.  If that eat meter number increased when you logged exercise, I think that would help matters.

Showing up under "Everyone" or under "Supporting/Supporters"? We're only filtering from Everyone; it makes sense that if there's someone you care about you get to see them on their good and bad days.

Regarding the burn meter - we're in the middle of reworking that product so you should see improvements soon.

Just an update regarding using my points:  shoecrush let me know that they were having trouble getting the items I had ordered.  At my request the order was cancelled, and my points were restored to me.  There was no charge to me for this.  Thanks, Igor, for your follow-up.

No problem. We're continuing to work on improving the refund process and we'll get it to be 100% automated. In the meantime, if anyone has any problems, don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Hey everyone, just wanted to announce a quick change that you'll be seeing over the next couple of hours.

Short version: we're making it easier now for people who don't like the social aspects of the Calorie Camp to still have access to some of the camp features such as goals, points, and rewards.

Long version: Since early January, there have been a number of different ways to experience the camp:

  1. You can opt out of the camp on your dashboard, which then also removed the camp integration from the Day Complete feature (see this option in your account settings page).
  2. You can leave the camp on your dashboard, but you can disconnect the camp from the Day Complete feature (this option in account settings)
  3. If you leave the camp integration in the Day Complete feature but choose the "Don't share, just complete my day" option (see where you can find this link), this was the equivalent of not participating in the camp at all.
  4. With the camp integration active in the Day Complete feature, if you set the privacy to "Private" and then submitted your report (see this setting), your report was not shared with anyone, but your activities counted against your weekly requirements, goals, points, and rewards.
  5. Finally, with the same settings as under 4, but with the privacy set to "Public" (see this setting), your activities counted against your weekly requirements, goals, points, and rewards, and it was also visible to others who then had the chance to like your report or comment on it.

The change we're implementing affects the option #3 above. Going forward, this option will continue to send you to the analysis page, but your activities will still count towards your weekly requirements, goals, points, and rewards. There will be no change to the privacy - none of the above will be visible to anyone other than you.

We felt the need to make this change after having received a large number of questions regarding our users' weekly status. In many cases, our users were surprised to see that they were stuck on week 1 even though that had been logging and marking their days complete for several weeks. Apparently, it wasn't clear that in order to pass the weeks, you had the choose the option #4 instead of #3. We hope that this change will help in this instance.

Has anyone had a problem redeeming points?  I have tried to use mine to purchase a pair of shoes through Shoe Crush.  I put in my order on January 10th, and as of this date it is still "processing."  My credit card has been charged.  Yesterday I sent them an e-mail asking that they cancel my order & issue a credit on my card.  I have not heard anything.

I followed up on this and will tell you as soon as I hear back.

I think we should recieve notifications when someone comments on our daily report. Otherwise they're just left there.

This should be fixed now, but please let me know if it's still happening. The intended behavior is that you always get notifications for comments on your own reports. When you comment on others, you'll be notified when other people comment only if you checked the checkbox while commenting.

Just to update everyone - we're working on making the newsfeed more selective. Right now, you're seeing pretty much everyone's reports, as long as they met some bare minimum criteria. Our goal is to move towards views that will provide more options and will better suit everyone's needs. Unfortunately, it's turning out to be a sizable engineering challenge so it might take us a bit before we can roll it out.

One of my goals is avoid alcohol. I haven't consumed any, and i certainly haven't logged any, however my report for yesterday, 12/18/2011, doesn't show a check mark next to that goal. My other two goals are checked for that day, and the Avoid Alcohol goal is checked for all other days. When I look at my analysis for 12/18/2011 it does not show anything under the Alcohol portion of the pie graph. Any thoughts on what could cause this?

Some foods have very miniscule amounts of alcohol that won't be enough to show up in the analysis, but our goal is checking for anything above 0. It looks like you have logged a custom food/recipe for 12/18 that includes a very low amount of alcohol.

Thanks Igor! That was quick. Now I have 2 more questions.

  • How do I access the daily reports of my supporters and supportees?
  • How do I end my week on Sunday so I can have my weeks begin on Mondays?

BTW, I love this new feature. Thanks!

  • See here.
  • Restart your week tomorrow using the Restart button at the bottom of your personal Calorie Camp page.

Another one...  It would be nice if we could see each others total calorie output for the day.

So If I eat 1600 calories but I burned 2000 everyone could see I had a deficit.

This may have already been answered but I got tired of reading every post by page three. I've noticed some people have their net calories showing in their daily post and some don't. Mine doesn't but I'd like it to. How do I get that feature?

For triggering reasons, we don't show the net calories if they exceed certain limits. You can always check your own value in the analysis section.

Igor, Hal, somebody :)

Would it be possible for the feed to be in "submitted time" order?  Drives me crazy that I'll look at someone who submitted 1 hour ago and then someone who submitted 8 hours ago.

I THINK the feed is currently based on last comment/last "like?"  for me, that's really annoying -- and I can't be a supporter of all the folks whose reports I have looked at and/or commented on.  I mean, of course I support them, but adding them to my list would be more than necessary, as they might not like it ...

It's not based on last activity but on a combination of factors (hence you wouldn't be seeing a lot of reports with 0 interactions at the top). Getting the sorting right is a big priority for us and we'll continue to experiment. I agree with you that a straight chronological method would have the benefit of making it easier for people to track who they've interacted with.

mskodzi, please don't give up on your food logging because of this nonsense.  I, too, find CalCamp frustrating and intrusive, and I wrote to Igor, one of the admins and told him so.  His reply was not only unhelpful, but condescending. I asked if this feature could be blocked, and was told, in so many words, that I needed to be more social and that even "seniors" like me were just thrilled to have everyone else's business plastered over their pages (like Facebook friends someone else has chosen for you).

I set off to see what alternatives were available, and as it turns out there are very few choices.   I've been here 7-1/2 months, lost 31 pounds, and for me keeping that food diary is the ONLY thing that keeps me on track.  So, I will endure the miserable clutter, put up with the extra clicks to get to the features I use, at least until I find something better.  What I will not do, if I can help it, is stop using the ONE feature that really has proven beneficial to me.

My point is-- if logging is working for you, don't give it up.  Your health is more important than all this nonsense.   If the owners of this page are serious about serving ALL their constituents (including busy professionals and curmudgeonly introverts who may not be inclined to wast time socializing here) they will eventually get the message.  I'm gratified to see in these pages that you and I are not the only objectors.

I don't usually respond to attacks, and I won't again. But I'll address this one and hopefully my response will serve as a blueprint for similar situations. Geemomma pointed out in her message to me that she's a grandmother. I wasn't sure how that had any relevance to the product so I encouraged her to give the camp a shot and mentioned "we have many seniors who are loving the product." Was there a better way of phrasing it? I am sure. Could it be that I missed her point? Possible. Most critically, did I make assumptions about Geemomma's age based on her family status? Yes and that was wrong.

I just simply wanted to share that on the same day that she sent her complaint I literally received hundreds of private messages from other people who loved the camp and pointed out that they are now more committed and doing better than before. In addition, we are tracking people's aggregate weight loss data and it's clear that the overall community across all age segments is losing more weight per day than ever before. Regardless, it's not my intention to insult anyone. When I didn't understand the point that's being made about being a grandmother, I should have stayed away from the age discussion in the first place. Going forward I'll be more considerate.

On the topic of Geemomma's overall message in her private message: we're looking into ways to change the dashboard. Some thoughts on this:

  • When we relaunched the analysis, there was just as much frustration about the changes. After a lot of back and forth, we re-enabled the old version for people who told us they didn't like the new one. Just a few days later, nobody was using the old version, including the most vocal members. On the engineering side, maintaining two branches of code is not ideal and comes at the cost of productivity.
  • We now wanted to give you a few days to give the new dashboard a good shot. While the vast majority is liking it (please remember that we have millions of members), it's clearly not working for everyone. And we do care about those members who are either feeling triggered or don't care about reading reports of people they don't recognize. Or just simply don't like reading any reports from other people at all.
  • The last point above is critical. We're currently in the process of making additional views (most popular reports, most successful members, etc), and we also want to make it possible to select your default view. So if you don't like reading about people complaining about their days, you won't have to. I personally believe that opting out of a product that's in its infancy is a bit rushed, but I am starting to realize that no matter what sort of improvement we make, a few people still won't be happy. And the honest truth is we care about those people, so we'll see how soon we can have a separate branch of code up and running to enable to old dashboard experience.

Hope that this will shed some more light on what's going on behind the scenes. Be patient, keep talking to us and we'll make it work for everyone!

One of the major points of feedback yesterday was our renaming of friends to followers. I responded with:

Let me explain why we did that. Friends implies that both people have confirmed the relationship, which - as you're probably aware - is not how CC works. For new people coming to our site and having the understanding of what friends generally means on other sites, it means that they are quite hesitant initiating a friend request worrying that the other person won't recognize them and won't approve the request.

This didn't use to matter much in the past because the only relationships that were being formed were between true friends. People usually met each other on the forums and spent a lot of time talking to each other before discovering a need to friend each other. In other words, while our system was built for asymmetrical relationships, it was being used in a symmetrical way.

Having launched the Calorie Camp, we're noticing that people are starting to initiate those relationships a lot sooner, because now they get to derive value from those people's logs. So CC is turning into a site where your content may be interesting to others even if they've never talked to you. They may want to learn about what you're doing to stay healthy and how they can do the same. Conversely, you may benefit from having more relationships because your logs will be shared with more people and you'll get more likes and comments.

Overall, we believe that the Calorie Camp will result in a much richer social graph for each user, and renaming the relationships from friends to followers is a part of the effort to help those graphs develop. Obviously, it comes at a cost of not being able to refer to your old true friends as friends, but I hope that's a small price to pay in return for ultimately having more people care about your progress.

Having spent some more time discussing this publicly and privately, we liked one particular suggestion which is to rename followers to supporters. This way we hope to get the best of both worlds: we're not tying ourselves to Facebook's symmetric model ("will the other person respond if they get a friendship request from me?"), and at the same time we're also giving your social graph a more important name that it truly deserves.

Sorry for changing this around so often and thanks for helping us find the best solution!

Think about all the time AND effort that they put into this free website - creating/improving/enhancing/moderating, etc.

You hate calcamp. We get it. They are working their tails off to make everyone happy. Fixing things immediately with this new program. I'd say that's pretty damn awesome customer service on a free site.

Hey everyone, the rest of the team and I really appreciate the kind words as well as the brutal negative feedback - they are both helpful. You won't hurt our feelings by telling us that you hate the camp, because the truth is you're taking the time out of your day to make sure that the overall site still works for you - which means that you actually like Calorie Count and we appreciate that. And to those who are defending us and encouraging us to keep developing the camp and other products: thank you. I remember many years back in 2004 when Erik and I were broke and this site was putting us in debt and depriving us of our sleep since we had to also have day jobs... we definitely wouldn't have made it without your encouragement back then, and to some extent it's still true today - I can guarantee you that it wouldn't still be the same team working on the same site 8 years later.

So where am I going with this? This site is full of various groups of people with very eclectic tastes and opinions. But that's also what makes it so special. Be nice to each other and I promise that our team will do our absolute best to meet the needs of as many individuals on the site as possible. It might take us some time, but we'll get there. The same was true when we re-launched the food log, the analysis and all those other products over the years. Have patience and we'll make it work for you.

This new feature sucks. How can I get rid of it? I should have the option to choose whether I want to share my information and opt out of this program, other than having to click "I don't want to share my information" every time I complete a day. It is such a hassle. Does anyone know of another site I can use instead if this feature continues?

And the rewards are live! If you go to your personal Calorie Camp page, you'll see a new section called points. When you click on it, you'll be able to see which rewards you qualify for (http://screencast.com/t/gMSqW8gpR). You'll be collecting points whenever you like or comment on other people's reports, or whenever you receive likes or comments from other people. There are additional points for meeting goals, submitting a report, etc. For more info, check out our FAQs.

While I may agree with the sentiment, before you get too strident about the marketing, keep in mind that *someone* has to pay the bills.

Server space is not free and the laborer is worthy of his hire (*nod* to the hardworking Igor) and only in sadly unsuccessful backward areas of the world are people expected to give, give, and give more for the mere *satisfaction* of giving (see Failed Political Systems: Communism).

In fact, I would go further to say that while you may have opinions about certain aspects of this, as do I, Igor et. al. have been *extremely* receptive, flexible, and responsive to the comments of members of this site.

Hats off to you all. You display the fundamental model of a successful capitalist venture. Good luck and I hope you succeed outrageously.

Really appreciate the kind words. And just for the record: we don't make any money off the rewards that I was talking about. I am sure there's a way of interpreting our intent in various ways, but be assured that we just want to pass on to you the free marketing dollars that other companies are making available to you.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
