Short answer: yes.

Long answer:

If you use the text link "don't share, just Complete My Day," then your report won't be included in the Calorie Camp at all.

If you set the privacy option to "No One," then you'll be able to track your own reports in Calorie Camp, but they won't be visible to anyone else.

hi - once you've signed up for calorie count camp, when you click on 'mark day complete' button at the end of your day, a dialogue box should open that asks if you would like to comment on your day (optional) with a space to write text and below that another button to mark day complete.  this is where you add your comments about your day.  hope that helps.

edit: meant to write 'once you sign up for calorie camp'. sorry if that caused any confusion.

Calorie camp just showed up on my profile and I didn't sign up for anything. Is it no longer an option to sign up for and everyone just has it now? I think it is a great tool for those who want to use it, but I am not sure I want everyone to see what I eat every day.

^^This! I can't figure out how to edit my settings. I want no part of this! I don't want people to see my stuff because I don't always log accurately and it will look incomplete. Please tell me how to fix it!

You're only seeing the logs that people choose to share during the "mark my day complete" process. You can avoid sharing by setting your sharing to private or by clicking the text link in that dialog. See here for more details on these two privacy options.

... and we just made the public launch! I would like to thank everyone who helped us test and refine the Calorie Camp over the last 2 months - you are really the best community that developers can hope for!

I also want to thank our partner Earndit.com for making rewards available for the most active calorie campers. To learn more about their service, visit our new FAQ page that explains the new points system as well as all other aspects of the Calorie Camp.

Can't wait to hear the feedback from everyone who ends up discovering the Calorie Camp today. I am sure there will be still a few things that we'll need to fix, and we'll continue to listen to your feedback and will be happy to make further changes if any appear necessary.

Happy camping, everyone!

Hey Campers,

I have a favor to ask: let us please do something that may not sound like a good idea at first, but might help us build a better product in the long term. Specifically, we're trying to address the amount of likes and comments that each report is getting. While we're reasonably happy with the engagement so far, conventional wisdom in our industry is to implement Facebook-powered comments to further increase the engagement. In other words, if this experiment were to work out, every report could end up getting more encouraging feedback.

Let me point out that this is different from Facebook Connect. We're not asking the original report poster to connect their CC account with Facebook and share the report with their Facebook friends -- we're asking that the report poster allows comment posters to share the report and comments with comment posters' friends.

Clear like mud? Here it is in simple terms: the report you're posting publicly is currently only available to people with a Calorie Count account. We're asking for this limitation to be lifted and that each report becomes visible to anyone, inside and outside of Calorie Count. There's a chance that someone you know might come across that account, but given the size of Facebook, it's not any more likely than if you were to write a public blog post but not tell any of your friends about it.

I'll be honest: we're not sure if this is a good idea or not. But the same was true with the Calorie Camp idea in the first place - we didn't know if people were interested in sharing their food logs with strangers. I think we can all reasonably agree that this first stage of Calorie Camp was a success - it really warms my heart to see when people get encouraging feedback and our stats show that people are coming back more often and logging more accurately. Let's try this stage 2 and see what life brings. If we get privacy problems, or lower-quality feedback from the Facebook community, or any other unforeseen negative side effect, I promise to replace the Facebook comments with our native system. But let's give this a shot - please support us in this adventure for a couple of days and let's keep our eyes on it!

Thanks so much for helping us test new things and find out what works!

I wouldn't mind that. Im sure most people wouldnt either if there was a way to turn it off or have it being off the default option. I think there should also be an option to share my completed day on facebook too and have those comments show up on my caloriecamp

Oh great - we're turning it back on!

(relax everyone, just kidding)

I think the lesson learnt from the forum posts, pm's and emails we received was that some people like being able to link their CC and Facebook identities, but it's definitely a minority. That's why we pulled it again and will instead make it available later down the road as an opt-in and 100% optional feature.

I am one of the "new invites".

Is there a page that gives instruction on how to navigate all of this?

How can I change some of the settings for this?

And, how come I have a limit of 3 goals when I see others have more?

I would like to take advantage of this but I am not sure of how to maximize its potential.  Thanks for any help!

We're currently working on FAQs, tutorial video, etc. All of this will be in place once we launch (and it's one of the reasons why it's not live yet). Until then, you'll have to poke around :)

One of the best things about Calorie Camp IS the fact that other people see your report(s).

I understand that, but I've been on CC for years now, and have a lot of friends who are not active on a daily basis and I think it would be very annoying for them to get daily emails from me.  I think that the camp sounds awesome, but I'll wait to join until there is a way for me to participate without bugging my old CC friends with unnecessary daily emails.

They can turn off the notifications to receive your daily reports... all they have to do is go into the first email they get, and click the link to not be notified anymore.

Maybe I don't understand how Calorie Camp works.  Is the daily email the only way that your friends can see what you were up to?  Or can they also see that on the dashboard?

Yes, the dashboard is the meat of the product (no pun...). Join the camp and check it out - it won't send out any reports to your friends if you select the private option on the mark-day-complete checkbox (you'll see when you join).

I'm glad to see that so many of you are happy with Calorie Camp.  I didn't sign up for the pilot program because I was turned off by the prospect that all of my friends would get a daily email about me.  I would like to sign up, but I first need to know if it's possible to join Calorie Camp and not contribute to the flood of unnecessary emails in my friends' inboxes.  Is there a way to participate in Calorie Camp without having daily report emails going out?

Your friends can unsubscribe from your Calorie Camp updates (see a preview: http://screencast.com/t/AkT2pMUB). Another option would be to choose the highest privacy option, but that would sort of defeat the purpose (nobody else will see your report). This product is designed to be used to get your friends to help you, and the email integration plays an important role there.

Thanks everyone for giving this experiment a shot - it's clear at this point that it's not working and we're in the process of reverting back to the native commenting system.

Also a few more details about the next steps: on Monday we'll invite a second wave of testers, so you should start seeing a lot more activity by mid week. If all goes well (servers don't melt, etc), we'll make the public launch the week after.

As always, feel free to offer suggestions on our Uservoice page, or just leave them here. And once again, thanks for all of your time and energy in helping us get this puppy out of the door!

Ok, I wanted to get a few more opinions before we make it final, but it sounds like we'll be reverting to the old model soon. Just to clarify:

  • If you submit your report, it won't go to Facebook. If other people comment on it, it will become available to those people's FB friends, not yours.
  • If you comment on someone's report, your FB friends will correctly conclude that you're a member of CC. But they won't automatically know which alias you're using for your CC account. And if they find you via profile pic or something else, CC allows you to hide your weight and other sensitive info.

Regardless, let's get a few more votes and then we'll call it a day. Thanks everyone for your patience!

Sorry if this was mentioned already, but how come on some people's reports you can see "net calories" in the dashboard, but not on others?

To avoid triggering of eating disorders, we only show net calories that are in the range of -500 to +1000.

We just released a bunch of changes:

  • You can now view your previous weeks
  • The toolbar is removed
  • Comments can be posted and goals can be viewed on the Dashboard
  • You can see who liked your and other people's reports
  • Goals can be changed at any time
  • The up/down votes on comments are replaced with likes
  • Total calories on the Dashboard are replaced with net calories (which will be calculated starting with today's submitted reports)
  • Unified comments/questions/tips into comments on the mark day complete overlay

Let us know how you like the changes. We're getting close to the public launch, which should be sometime in December. Yay!

I noticed the improvements in several areas and I'm very excited that the public launch will be coming soon.  I mentioned Calorie Camp in a blog post recently, so I hope many of my friends will come and join in the fun:

Thanks for all your hard work!  I do love this site!

Benia

Yep, we actually picked up your blog post via Google alerts. Thanks for the write up and congrats on the weight loss!

One thing I noticed that I personally don't like - is with the new layout, you can't see the total cals people ate - only see the rating (A, A+, etc).

For technical reasons, we had to enable the net calories only for reports submitted after this release. Have a look at the reports later today or tomorrow and tell us what you think.

Hmm... we just decided to hold off on the net calories and instead you'll continue seeing total calories. We'll have to put some more work into the net calories.

Hey guys, remember that they are just building the tool now and we've been invited to help them try it out. No need to get all indignant and pissed off. Not that I haven't gotten that way sometimes... but it helps to remember they're still working out the kinks and that we're lucky to have Calorie Camp before it's even available to most people!

haha, thanks for the support, but just for the record, we're seeing all feedback as helpful and understand that our members are depending on our service and expect it to work well. don't be shy ;)

As we're nearing the public launch (and given many interesting points of feedback that we've received in the last couple of days), I'd like to invite anyone interested to get on a call with me and Hal and discuss in detail the highs and lows of the current execution. We want to make sure that we have a 100% understanding of all challenges that you've encountered, and of all of the edge cases that we hadn't thought of. I'd like to make this happen as soon as possible, ideally tomorrow Nov 9th.

We'll only be able to talk to a limited number of people, so first come first serve. If we don't get enough info by end of day tomorrow, I'll post and update and will let you know if we're extending the period. To get on a call with us, just send me a private message with your availability and phone number. Looking forward to connecting!
