Fitness Why do I eat more on the days I dont exercise? I just dont get it? Jan 18 2013

From my own experience, when I exercise I am more invested in my day and in taking good care of myself. When I don't, I struggle not to let the day become a free for all. This is particularly trying, as I am forcing 2 rest days on myself each week. So now I'm attempting to reprogram myself - days without hard exercise are necessary and no less important to my wellbeing than those where I do workout. They are thus deserving of as much self investment and care.

Does that make sense?

Thank you all so very much for your replies! I am such a novice at this (starting running last March, before that just 6 months of incline walking)

Lysis and Raiken- 30-45 minutes of intervals? Egads! I think I will need to work up to that, and probably call it a day (no steady state afterwards). 1 or 2x a week is doable.

Serapa - I am a sloooow runner, and really want to get faster. It will make me feel like I've accomplished something big, and I need that right now. Otherwise, yeah, I'd stick with my hour long runs because they get the job done with minimal pain.

In other progress news, I went for a 5 mile hike yesterday (2.5 uphill, 2.5 down). I've done this hike many times, and afterwards usually feel like my backside has taken a beating. Yesterday, I felt energized when I got to the top and ran most of the way down (I know, downhill running is easy, but it still got my heart rate going!). And today, only my quads are a tiny bit sore, presumably from the downhill running. Nice!

My sugar cravings are killing me - especially at night time, a couple hours after dinner. I have Greek yogurt with some Splenda (or stevia, if you prefer) and some frozen berries. It's sweet and delicious and the protein from the yogurt helps to quell any underlying hunger.

Ladies: thank you so much for your replies!

DBack: I hadn't used any weights. I'm hoping to get my gym membership this month!

Lysis: thank you for the explanation. Glad to know all bodies get cranky when starting interval training and that it gets easier - that's a relief! But how often does one need to interval train to see some benefit?

I wear Mizunos as well. These were tge only shoes I tried on that seemed to properly support my arches. I've had mine for 6 months now and I run about 20-25 miles a week in them. The support at this point does not seem to be what it was over the Summer, so I'm now looking into in-soles. Probably would have been best to buy two pairs and alternate. Oh well... next time.

Out of town and really didn't want to put on the shoes this morning. And then I thought about my upcoming day: baking cooking with my mom and niece, home-made pizza for dinner. Nothing like exercise to exculpate the day's indulgences!

Perhaps it's a lettuce wrap, but it ain't a taco. Whatever it is, I'll give it a whirl - sounds delicious.

This may not be the ideal solution, but at least I know I will not be heavier in the new year than I am right now.

I'm working my  tushy off NOW - my daily deficit is around -800. And then, between Saturday and Tuesday, I'll pretty much let myself eat what I want. I don't expect to go too crazy because, after having a regimented eating schedule and food list, I'll probably feel awful after eating my first couple of cookies. I'm also hoping to get in 2 runs during those 4 days as well. And then, after Tuesday, my nose goes back to the grindstone and remains there until New Years Eve. It's okay to be a little piggy every now and again, especially during the holidays. If I denied myself, I'd feel cheated all year.

Also, let it be known: I need to lose weight, but have no expectations of doing so during the next two weeks. And I'm okay with that.

Squeezing in the miles while I can. I'm trying to be realistic - getting any any runs next week is going to be very challenging.

Question for other runners: does the first 15-20 minutes of a run always kind of suck? Or does this get better with better fitness? It's not my CV system - which is usually ready to go faster during the early part of a run, it's my stupid, uncooperative legs! They ache and complain and then they're okay.

I decided to try some interval stuff today for the first time. Man that **** is hard! I managed 4 rounds - increasing my comfortable running speed by about 1.2 mph for about 2.5 minutes, then walking for 2.5 minutes, repeat x 3. My goal here is to get more out of my runs without increasing my time investment. I'm already pushing the outer limits of what I can maintain for the long haul. But increasing speed for the entirety of my 50 minute run (there's also a 5 minute warm up and cool down in there) has been extremely challenging, even discouraging.

I also realized something important today - if I'm bored, it means I'm not working hard enough.

Reading about all your workouts is fantastic motivation!

Grilled cheese, PBJ, tuna melts if I'm feeling fancy and willing to invest all of 10 minutes in myself. I've also done the popcorn thing.

Yeah, TRULY pathetic, considering I have a reputation for being an excellent cook among my family and friends. And I really take pride in making delicious and healthy meals for everyone else!

Indeed - what is wrong with us?
