| Fitness | Best pedometer for outdoor walkers? | Dec 31 2011 16:44 (UTC) |

Hi! I have been using an Omron (Model: HJ-720ITC) pocket pedometer for over a year now and really like it. I bought it off Amazon for $35 or so dollars. You can download all the info onto your computer and it will track daily, monthly, yearly. It tells you how many steps and whether they are aerobic or non-aerobic, and how many miles you have gone. There may be a better one out there, but for the cost I think this is a pretty good one. Seems to be very accurate. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the responses. No, I don't have to have a personal trainer, and at this point probably won't. I just went for the free consultation thinking he would show me what I needed to be doing. I have been a member of a gym since I was 18 except for the last three years. I was hoping for a refresher course. I have NROLW and "This is Why You are Fat" and they both seem to have good weight lifting sections. I just need to go through them and see what I want to do. He did seem more interested in pushing his pt services on me and Gold's gym supplements, then he did in wanting to help me getting started. It was good to find out my body fat percentage(embarrassing) and weight, so can set some real goals. |

Thanks for the information. I think I would try just about anything at this point. Some one told me to try rolfing, but my insurance doesn't cover it. I did a lot of research on it and think it could really help, but too expensive without the help of insurance. I'll try the roller and see if that helps. I'm also going to look for some good walking shoes instead of running shoes. |

Are there different size rollers, or just a one size fits all? |

oldguysrule - I am walking in running shoes. I have been doing that for the last couple of years because the people at the shoe store told me it was what I needed since I tend to roll out when I walk. What you're saying makes since though. I buy shoes ever six months or so, and just bought a brand new pair of shoes a couple of weeks ago, so that sucks. I always thought you had to spend a lot of money to get a good shoe, I guess I need to rethink that. Thanks again for everybody's input. dbackerfan - I don't know what The Female Body Breakthrough is, so I'll have to look it up.

Thanks to every one for replying. I am going to spend the next day or two putting together a good strength training program. The heaviest set of weights I have is a two ten pound dumbbells and an eight pound kettle bell. I probably need to get a heavy set of weights. dbackerfan - What kind of heart rate watch do you have? How long have you been doing your current workout and did it take long to see results? bonnysaxon - It has been over a year since both injuries occurred. I gained forty pounds because I had to stay off my feet for most of the day. My physical therapist told me it was ok to start trying to get back into exercising, but not to over do it. I would love to take up swimming again(was on the swim team in high school), but the nearest pool is half an hour away. Some times I wonder if my weight is contributing to my shins hurting. I am thirty six years old, but feel like Iam much older since gaining the weight. Thanks again for all the great advice. |

I have also read The China Study and it is an excellent read. Another good one is Food Inc.(it also has a Documentary). I have read and am trying to follow the Eat To Live diet, but I am struggling with it. I know what I should eat but at times I just break down and go for an english muffin instead of fruit for breakfast. I have been walking almost everyday on my treadmill for the last two months. I walk at least 3 to 5.5 miles a day(6 days a week), but the scale hasn't moved. I get discouraged easily and start telling myself I will be fat forever. I do have a question I was hoping someone could answer for me. I am a Type 1 diabetic and was wondering if just having fruit for breakfast is okay? I know as a diabetic I should watch my fruit intake but it makes sense to me why eating just fruit for breakfast is good. Thanks! |

I am a Type 1 diabetic, so I know what you are talking about. I do take a probiotic called Floragen3. I think it makes my urine smell though. I use ALL Free detergent because I can't handle the perfumes and dyes in other brands. I also use Free dryer sheets. I'll get some cranberry juice and see if that helps. Thanks cptbunny I appreciate the advice. |

Yes, it is in the form of a yeast infection. I wear cotton panties only and mostly sweat pants(I stay at home). I do wear jeans when I go out. I do not sweat a lot unless I am working out and I do wipe front to back. Since finding out I have candida I have started cutting out things with yeast in them and quiet a few carbs and sweets. My diet is not perfect, but not horrible either. I have been told the only way to get rid of it is to eat only veggies and meat. Doesn't sound like that would be healthy for more than a couple of weeks. I love fruit and am having a hard time giving it up. I guess if eating just veggies and meat is the only way to get rid of it I'll have to go that route :( |

I'm not a raw foodist, but I have been doing some reading to help me incorporate more raw foods in my diet. I just got done reading a book called Living on Live Food by Alissa Cohen. It is an easy read and full of great information, plus it has a ton of recipes in it. I know I will never be 100% raw, but would love to be at least 60% raw. Good luck! |

Sorry Caclose for taken so long to message you back. I finally did. I have been eating more salads, beans, and fruit, and cutting out the junk in my diet. Tomorrow I am officially starting the Eat To Live diet. My biggest concern is dinner time. It seems to be the time I cook the not so healthy meals, so I'm trying to change that. Tonight I made a big green salad with celery, cucumber, carrots, several types of leafy greens, sliced almonds, and small pieces of chicken. I really like salad and could eat it every day, but I know my husband and daughter wouldn't like it all the time. My husband told me he would support this new way of eating and if he wanted something not on the plan he would get it outside of the home. I am also going to work a little harder on my exercise plan too. I really want to do this and make it work.

I decided last night to reread the book because it has been a while since I read it. I will look for the Disease-Proof Your Child book, it sounds like a good read. I am trying to get my husband on board and at the same time I know I can't expect him to do the diet just because I am. You are really lucky your husband is doing it with you. I am trying to get my daughter to make better food choices; especially in the fruit and veggie department. I gained a good part of my weight over two years ago when we moved from Colorado to Iowa. My husband and I really hated leaving Colorado and all of our out door activities. I missed my friends, gym, and working part-time. Iowa was a lot colder than where we came from in Colorado(we were on the Utah border), so I spent a lot of time inside feeling sorry for myself. We now live in Wisconsin(my husband's company transferred us) and I am so tired of the cold and lack of sunshine. I feel like I get depressed in the winter time because of the lack of sun and lack of exercise. I have bought some workout tapes and treadmill and have been pretty consistent over the last month and a half using them. My weight hasn't budged, which tells me it's what I'm eating. I have been adding more fruits and veggies into my diet, but I know I still need to eliminate the diet soda, extra sugar, and fat in my diet. I'm going to go through the book again and take notes this time around, and hopefully dive into like you did. I really appreciate you sharing your experience with the diet. Do you eat only fruit for breakfast? If so, do you feel like it keeps you until lunch? Thanks, Amy |

Caclose - When you did the six week plan did you dive right into it, or did it take some time to adjust to it? I have a lot of weight to lose too(around 80-90 pounds), and think this would be a great plan for me because it's something that can be done for life. I have never been a milk drinker and was able to get my husband and daughter to switch over to rice or almond milk. I love the unsweetened almond milk the best. Did your husband lose weight also? Thanks for sharing.

I am doing the same trying to have days where we don't eat meat. I have started juicing in the morning, which has helped with my blood sugars(I'm a type 1 diabetic) and having more raw veggies during the day. When they have meat and cheese sandwiches for lunch, I've started having a veggie sandwich. Hummus makes a really good spread on veggie sandwiches. |

I have read this book several times and think it's filled with good information. Implementing it is another story. I'm in the process of trying to become a vegan, but hard with my husband and daughter. Are you a vegan? If so, was it hard to make the changes? |

Hi everyone! I am starting the Slim in 6 today and had a question. Since you are supposed to do SI6 at least 6 days a week can you still weight train your legs two days a week? Can I do SI^ in the morning and weight train in the afternoon? Good luck to everyone. |

I bought an Omron HJ-720ITC For xmas last year and love it. It came with a cable so you can download your results. You can look at what you have done for the day, a week, a month and year. It tells you how many miles you walked and how many calories you burned. I like being able to see my reults in a graph form. I bought it on amazon.com for $35 plus shipping. |
