The Lounge ONYD! Brooks Goes Off on Romney Sep 18 2012

I think what Romney said reflects his true opinion regardless of what Ann Romney's speech at the convention tried to portray - that the Romney family understands the working poor in this country.  I do think however that with the rising costs of assisting Americans that there should be a serious discussion of what the government can and cannot pay for.

Families used to be rather cohesive and took care of their elderly parents etc.  now this is falling more and more to agencies and for profit institutions that are expensive and costing us alot of tax dollars.

If conservatives could learn (to quote Henry Ford) that "Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success."

If liberals could learn that giving people money does not solve all problems.

I haven't read all the posts, but seems to me that if I had a business that I would want as many people as possible eating there not debating my political views.  Everyone is entitled to free speech, however looks like that can cut both ways as Chick-fil is finding out.

IMO I think it is a compliment that she asked you and she must think highly of you and your talents to want you to assist her with this project.  I would be honest and tell her that you can't afford to give up your paid work to volunteer for her, and ask if there is any chance that you could be paid for your time.  If she says no, tell her that as much as you would love to do it, that you can't do it.  However, I would let her know that is something comes up in the future that is paid you would be interested in it.

Your list also includes the HSA not covering non-prescription drugs etc.  I don't think that is a tax either.  This has been in effect at my workplace for over a year.  I have a HSA account and not covering something is not the same as a tax IMO.

I read the article, and there is alot of name calling.  I have been blessed in my life to work at a decent job that always has had benefits.  I am willing to pay more taxes for health care especially for those with chronic conditions and if it helps people avoid serious illness through preventative health care.  It beats paying taxes to use on wars, IMO.

My prediction is that ObamaCare passes including the individual mandate.  IMO this is one of the most important cases that the Supreme Court has heard in awhile. I think the SCOTUS recognizes that the individual mandate goes beyond the scope of the individual states and is reflective of the welfare of the entire country and thus should be decided at the federal level.

The Board is elected by the shareholders ... the ones who own the company and who put their money at risk to have a company in the first place.

The CEO's deserve the compensation that the shareholders are willing to pay.  The CEO of a major corporation is not a figurehead in a suit.  To become a CEO, you have to have business acumen and motivation at a level that is beyond most of our abilities.  You have to know each and every aspect of your business from the supply chain to the factory floor to the customer base.  You have to be able to respond intelligently to changes in the business.  You have to stay abreast of developments in the industry.  You have to respond to regulatory changes.  You have to negotiate with employees, customers, suppliers, and other business.  You have to be able to motivate your employees.  Are those skills worth more than, say, being born with a nice figure and a pretty face and flashing some cleavage at a camera?  Hell yes.

Worked for Enron, right up until they went bankrupt, cost California millions, and lost the life savings in the 401K accounts of their working class employees.

"We've got infinitely more power at the ballot box than we do in the boardroom."

I totally agree with this.  What recourse would the American people have with privatized services when things did not go well with them?  Of course the courts but who can afford that?  At least we have the ballot box that allows everyone to vote.  In addition, where does it say that privatization of the many services that Americans have become used to would be better under privatization and not just different?

It seems to me that the attack on the gov't lumps all of the federal programs together, why are they(both the repub. & democrats) not identifying measurements to determine the effectiveness of the programs and the impact both negative and positive on the country.  We as a country should always hold federal agencies accountable on the effectiveness of their programs, including the military, IMO.

This time i found the show really depressing mainly because it really does reflect how overweight we are in the U.S.  I especially have been thinking about what Bob asked Arthur the 500+ young man who had already lost 100 lbs. before coming on the show - what is the dialogue that goes on in your head to get to this weight?  Really good question that I am asking myself....

For the life of me, why would the Reps. still continue to beat us over the head with allowing the tax cuts for those over $250,000 when all they whine about is our debt?  It makes absolutely no sense to me.  If the tax cuts were put in place to help create jobs i.e. the ole trickle down theory, where in the heck are the jobs that were created AS A RESULT OF THE TAX CUTS that have been in place.

The elimination of the tax cuts for someone making over $250,000 may mean they have to reduce their vacation from 3 weeks to 2 weeks.  To a family making $50,000 a year the elimination of the tax cut may mean the difference between being able to afford rent or groceries.

Well, we've reached the point in the life of our nation where we need a revolution to get back to basics.  It's the same old people in Washington year after year, and they're doing nothing good for the people.  The best thing we can hope to achieve in the midterms is a shake-up.  A revolution won't happen because of it, but it will create gridlock in our government, which will actually be a good thing.

Seems to me we already have gridlock with both parties unable to dial down the rhetoric long enough to work together to resolve some of the serious issues facing our country.  Getting back to basics i.e. "we want our america back" - what exactly does that mean? Back to basics - eliminate social security? the deductions for homeowners?  reduce money for education?  See, it seems to me that when people talk about cutting government they mean cutting the other guy's funds they get from the government - not theirs. For example, the senior citizens group that complained(yelled) about everyone else getting health care while they collect medicare.

Frankly, I don't see much of a difference between BP's response vs. Exxon's response 21 years ago to the oil spill in Prince William Sound.  People cleaning up the oil got sick and some of them had severe health reactions to working with the oil.  Exxon couldn't contain the oil either.  WTH have the oil companies been doing for the last 20 years?  And the federal gov't oversight for the past 20 years = FAIL IMO.  I don't believe BP for a minute that they will make "everyone whole".  They are lying....this will be fought in courts and I predict BP will fight the settlements costs just like Exxon did and might be even more successful since they could claim an act of God, the environmental factors, etc caused the well to fail not them.  They will come up with some lame excuse.

As for Prince William Sound?  The shores have a ring of oil around it to this day - 21 years later.  It is like a bathtub with an oil ring around it.  It all sucks.....

Although BP has a lot to answer for, I think to point fingers only at BP doesn't tell the whole picture.  The U.S. has a huge appetite for oil, and to get oil requires drilling in less than ideal situations.  Until the demand for oil decreases the oil companies will continue to take risks in order to meet the demand.  I drive a car that uses gas, and because I do, I am part of the problem as well.
