The Lounge Flying flag half-mast for singers, actors, etc.... Feb 18 2012

Thank you soxgurl. I'm sure, since I live at a military post and see the heartache that has happened the last 10 yrs. to our military soldiers, it make it difficult for me to honor a singer the same way I honor someone that that was killed serving my country. My other problem is with calling everyone a hero.

Here is the meaning: a man/woman of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. 2. a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal: He was a local hero when he saved the drowning child. 3. the principal male character in a story, play, film, etc.     Does this fit? We may love someone, or look up to someone, but they aren't  a hero.  By calling everyone a hero, the word has little meaning and any importance associated with it. A person isn't a hero because they died from cancer, they suffered and died and may have done it with grace, but not as a hero.  A beloved actor/singer died and may be talented, but they were human, and died , it doesn't make them a hero.   But, this is just how I feel and like everyone else in the world, they are entitled to what they believe.

As someone from a family with many people serving in the military and fighting in the many wars we've been involved in (and father currently in Afghanistan), there are plenty of d-bag "soldiers" that I'd NEVER call a hero...

The Lounge Does "I'm sorry baby" always work for you? Feb 18 2012

Nope. He doesn't upset easily but I sometimes do. I explain what he did to make me upset and why I feel that way. 99.9% of the time it's been something he didn't think was a big deal but after me explaining why I was upset he could see it in a different way. We talk out our problems. If all I got was "I'm sorry, baby" every time I'd go crazy (unless it's for something small--like the toilet seat or something). You have to work through your problems.

My sister and I are three years apart. We fought like crazy (i.e. fist fighting sometimes even) until I moved away to college. We've since grown pretty close and even though we can still have blow out screaming matches, no more than 20 minutes later it's fine again.

My mom used to cry when we were younger because she was afraid we'd grow up to hate each other. We turned out okay. haha

Modern German History.... by far the least favorite. I hated it even more than statistics (and I'm horrible at math).

I was veg for 3 years when I added meat back into my diet. I tried going back by eating a burger. It did make me sick but nothing serious. After that I just slowly added stuff back in. I still only eat meat 2-3 times a week though.

I knit my boyfriend a scarf for Christmas. I was really worried about if he would like or not but I was proud of it since it as the first scarf I knit with no mistakes.

When he opened it he didn't realize I'd made it but when I told him he had tears in his eyes. haha He was a lot more touched by it than I expected. It makes me happy to see him wearing it.

I never wanted them but now I'm 27 and I've had the strongest urge to get pregnant. My boyfriend is about to turn 30 and has pressure from his parents to settle down so we're seeing how this relationship goes. haha

He doesn't know I'd like to be married and pregnant within the next 16 months or so. haha

I hate my job. I'm good at it but really don't enjoy it. I'm finishing my Master's soon but it's not enough to get where I want after talking to some people who have the kind of job I want. I'm researching PhD programs in Maternal/Child Health to start in fall 2013 to give myself some time to save up some money/take a break from school/study for the GRE.

My boyfriend has made some comments regarding my weight but it comes down to cultural differences in appropriateness (we're from different countries). I talked to him about why it bothered me and such and he understood.

Maybe say something to your boyfriend. If he doesn't listen, do what suzushii said. haha

I'm 27. I've known for a long time what I wanted to do but didn't really know what path to take to get me there. I scrapped my back-up plan after undergrad and decided to go for my dreams. Now I realize (after talking to those who have the job I want) that a Master's degree will not get me there... I need a PhD. So now I've gotta deal with that after I wrap up my Master's thesis in the spring.

I'd be interested to know, as well, how Ohio is doing with all their other child abuse cases.

Have they eradicated abuse from their state? Is there a kid who's being beaten that should go to foster care, while they are making an example out of this woman?

The social services system in Ohio is a joke to me. When I worked at an inpatient facility for abused kids, I saw kids get sent back to their abusive parents too many times... the abuse continued and then the kids were sent to a long-term facility.

I'm currently getting my Master's degree in South Korea. Like tritessa, I didn't move here to study but it happened after I moved. I'm studying International Development at a top Korean university but I don't like my program. That said, I'm changing thesis advisors to get the most out of my thesis. My program turned out to be more general than I expected.

My advice is just research the program well. If it's just a semester abroad, go have fun.

It changes when you move out. Of course they'll still aggravate you sometimes but you enjoy your time with them more once you're on you're own.

Well, I think that the availability of really unhealthy food has a lot to do with it.  America seems to be run on fast food.

Also, don't Americans tend to work more hours/longer days than most people in other countries?  I think I heard that somewhere...we take fewer vacations, etc.  Which is not a good thing and I think contributes to weight gain.

Actually, we don't. Korea and Japan work the most hours in the world with the least amount of vacation time. The difference is when Koreans have Sundays off they spend it outside hiking or walking instead of laying on the sofa all day.

Oh ok.  Well I just know I heard/read somewhere that Americans are the least satisfied with their jobs and work too much.  I believe that in other countries, vacations are more encouraged and are more a part of regular life and scheduling.

In Europe, yes.
