Health & Support Panic Attacks (mental health issue) Nov 23 2008

I can really relate to this topic.  I'm 17, and have suffered from pretty bad panic attacks since I was 15.

However, I think that there are definitely methods and ways of overcoming it.  My 'trigger' was feeling trapped, and that if something was to happen I would not be able to leave the room or stage without letting someone down, so pretty much claustrophobia. I was really really worried that this would affect my GCSEs (exams in the UK which are sat at 15/16) and so a family friend who runs a hypnotherapy business offered to treat me.

I was a complete skeptic, but it did work really really well.  I didn't have a single attack during my exams, or for 6 months after.  Since I had the hypnotherapy sessions a year and a half ago, I've only had 2 panic attacks, which is amazing considering at one point I was having them daily. I think the main thing that it helped with wasn't so much stopping the panic attacks, but knowing what to do if I had one, which in turn helped calm me down.

The thing is, once you've managed to talk yourself down from the height of one panic attack without anyone noticing or having to leave the room, I think you do gain confidence because you know you CAN cope, and you're not going to die. The method the hypnotherapist taught me was basically just deep yoga breathing, while repeating the mantra "I am calm, and in control" in my head really slowly, counting to ten in between each repetition.  I know it sounds really tacky, but it worked for me.

Weight Loss If i'm eating 1,300 calories per day... Nov 17 2008

maybe try eating your BMR for a few weeks?

There's a lot of cynics of the 'starvation mode' on this site, but speaking as someone who has experienced the same thing as you (large defict, but no weight loss), I'd say that eating under your BMR consistently can slow down weight loss.

The easiest way to think of it is that the BMR is an approximation of the amount of calories your vital organs need to function normally.  So to keep your heart rate steady, breathing regular and brain functions 'normal' you would need to eat your bmr.

However, if you are eating under your BMR, the body anticipates a reduction in the availability of food, and so it attempts to function at a lower level, so that the body holds its fat stores and can still function relatively well.  However, there can be some side effects from this - irregular heart rate, weak immune system etc.

So, if you are eating up to 500 calories under your BMR, your body will adjust to assure you have stores of fat for future rationing.  However, if you are eating your BMR, the body can sense that there is enough supplies for the basic organs, and thus is more willing to burn off the fat during exercise.

Obviously, this is different for those eating significantly under their BMR, as the body cannot adjust to the large defict.  However, this is hopefully not an issue you will ever have to worry about!

if anyone wants to calculate their BMR, a great site is caloriesperhour.com (I'm in no way affiliated with the site, its just the one I've always used in conjunction with CC+)

Digitalkitt; your BMR (basal metabolic rate => amount of calories your body needs to keep ticking) Is 1518 with your stats, is you are 25.   The BMR should be what you consume daily.

If you then did absolutely nothing, like sitting on the sofa all day, you'd burn 1822, so lose around .5lbs a week, as you'd be having a 300 calorie defict daily.

If you were moderately active - exercising 3-5 times a week, you could burn 2300 calories daily, and stand to lose 1.5lbs a week.

Obviously, this isn't true if I've guessed your age wrong - sorry if I have, I just went for an age which was neither very young or very old!

Weight Loss Is CC similiar to WW when calculating how many calories Nov 15 2008

the weight watchers points can't be directly transferred into calories because the points take into account the amount of fat in a food. the exact calculation is;

WW points = calories/50 + fat/12 - amount of fibre/5

the points are less accurate than just counting calories though, but can be a lot easier if you are sticking to weight watchers food.  Personally, I think its best to calculate your BMR, and eat to that.

The weight watchers calculation 'test' said I could have 20 points which is, at an approximation, 1000 calories.  So make sure you take the results with a pinch of salt, and eat at least your BMR.

Young Calorie Counters whats the strangest thing you find attractive in the other sex? Nov 12 2008

I'm still not entirely sure I find it attractive, but every guy I've ever crushed on/dated has had really thick, dark eyebrows...

Dark hair is practically a must for me, and if its just under shoulder-length and really curly I melt... Also, I like my men tall.  However, there is a guy who goes to college who is absolutely PERFECT, except for the fact he's 5'4.  I'm willing to see past the height thing for him (if he was ever interested in me, that is...)

Erm... there's so many with amazing bodies!

I love Audrey Hepburn's shape, she was only that thin through living through the holocaust, so I have no desire to be that shape myself.

Grace Kelly had an amazing body.  I'd like to be a more muscular version of her.  Or Sophia Loren.  Or Bridgette Bardot. Basically anyone from old hollywood, with those amazing small waspish waists and larger hips.  I'd say Marylin Monroe too, but my boobs would never be as large as hers!!

Alicandra, you need to improve body composition, not scale weight.  You could lose weight and look scrawny and "skinny-fat."  What will help you is getting fit and toned, not just getting skinnier.

as much as I wish that I could do this, one of my main ED problems was that I was a compulsive exerciser - 25 hours or more in the gym/on a sports court a week.  I'm on a doctor enforced plan, where I'm not allowed to do more than 8 hours a week (which I absolutely hate), and its pretty hard to get 'fit' on that, when you're body's used to doing thrice that.

However, I think there are a lot of people who could benefit from this advice, I'm just a special case.  It does make me very sad to see people on here who are 100lbs and 5'4 saying that they're fat,  because their body image is so distorted.  But, personally I believe that if the BMI aim isn't unhealthy, there is no reason why a teen whose BMI is 22-27 shouldn't be allowed to try and lose weight for themselves, even if they don't technically need it.

My advice would be Vodka and tonic water! Vodka= 69calories, tonic water=0calories....you can always add a wedge of lemon or lime for taste....that is the lowest calorie "cocktail" I've found.

BZZZT! Incorrect. Tonic water has as many calories as a Coke.

Freedomfrom speaks the truth.  Unless you get the diet stuff, then you're looking at around 120+ calories for a bottle of tonic water.  The diet tonic water can be as little as 2 cals per bottle, but once again I've never seen one that's completely calorie 'free'.

For me, I quite enjoy diet lemonade and vodka.  About 100 cals for a glass, so you could have 4?

Ok, so Thanksgiving is late november this year, yeah? (Sorry, feel free to educate my British self!!)

I'm 100% up for losing 5lbs by then.  That's around 1/2lb a week, which is a more than realistic target.  Bring it on! Laughing

I'm a 17 year old who's 5'8 and 148lbs.   With those stats, you could say I don't 'need' to diet. Yet here I am.

I'm in the same position as member76. I have virtually no chest, a sizable stomach and 'thunder thighs'.  Even though I'm at a healthy weight and size (I'm a UK12, US8) I look a lot larger due to my waist circumference, which due to sport and weight gain is around the 29-30 mark - the danger zone.

I've had huge problems with my weight in the past, bouncing from being obese to having an eating disorder in the last 5 years.  And I know its sad, and I should get a life, et cetera, but if I was to see 135lbs on the scales again, it would make me happy, at least for those few seconds where I was stood on the scale.

Just because some of the people on here are a healthy weight but trying to lose a little (not to become underweight, just the lower end of the healthy scale) doesn't mean they don't deserve to be here.  If its not taking over their lives, then I don't see why they shouldn't chose to lose 5-10lbs.

If they're not trying to become underweight (by the teenage calculation of 'underweight', not the BMI scale, that does not apply to teens) then I don't see the problem.

hey bycomparison!

Just wanted to say hi... you're story's a lot like mine, I lost weight the unhealthy way for a long time, then decided to go for it the right way!

I've been on a "break" from CC for about 2 months - I wanted to break my *minor* obsession with counting every single calorie - but now I'm back, a bit flabbier, but still me.

Young Calorie Counters Ever been hit? May 10 2008

Speaking as someone in a similar situation, is it only when he's drunk that he hits you? My dad tends to follow a pattern of hitting/slapping/kicking me when;

1) his football team lose

2) he has tried to drown his sorrows from the loss by gambling away half his money/money he has borrowed off me

3) he has spent the rest of his money on alcohol

4) my mum is out of town

are there any common factors that you can think of like that? Because what I've started doing is staying around someone else's house whenever I find out his team have lost... Since I started doing that, we've only had one of our massive fights, and even that wasn't half as bad as usual.

The only problem is you mentioned siblings - are they younger than you?  and would he hit them?  I have a younger brother, but he is my father's golden boy, and I know my father would never lay a finger on him, so I feel safe enough leaving them together, and my brother is now significantly taller than my father, so could probably hold his own anyway (not that I'd want him to have to).

Fitness Who should I listen to? About.com or my Tredmill meter? May 06 2008

To be honest, both are just estimates - even if you had two people of identical height/weight/gender/hair colour etc etc, there would probably still be a slight variation in the amount of cals they burn.

I'd go with the higher value, since about.com takes into account the amount of cals you burn alongside the exercise, whereas the treadmill may only measure the amount that the treadmill burns.

Before - crisps (as in american chips), chips (as in fries), ice cream, CHOCOLATE, milkshakes, veggie-burgers, pasta (I could easily down 4 platefuls! Now I limit myself to half a plate + half a plate salad), pizza (doubly bad since I'm allergic to yeast), nutella...

After - raisins, nuts, humus, Peanut butter (I'd never had it before I joined CC), dry cereal, and to be honest there is still the chocolate in the list...

Weight Gain anorexia 33kg and Wt gain Apr 07 2008

Okay... So in pounds and inches, that's 5'4 and 73lbs (quite a lot of people on here use this measure instead of metric, I don't know why) And your BMI is 12.5, so you need to put on 17kg (around 37lbs) in order to get your BMI up to 19.

Your BMR is 1,178 calories, and if you are relatively inactive, you will be burning around 1,602.  The normal procedure is to add 1000 calories a day on top of this in order to gain 2lbs a week, but to be blunt I think you should be eating 3000+ calories. With your current weight, I am surprised you are not in a hospital, and I think the priority with you is getting your BMI to at least 17, so around 43kg I think?

For eating, try a week doing it the 'normal' way - lots of nuts, whole grains, bananas etc.  But, if you are falling short of 2300 calories, then maybe you should take a protein shake or other such supplement on top? The ensure weight gain shakes are quite good, if you can get them!!

Heeeey

I've been away for a while 'saving the world' (I was at a climate change conference!) but I'm back! I think my starting weight was around 147, and I'm down to 141 - Most of it is because I've had the stomach bug that's going around, I expect to be back up to 144 by the end of the week.  I can handle that though, it would still be a 3lb loss!! Wooo...
