Low carb isn't the best lifestyle, it's the dumbest, unless you have a medical reason for doing it.

You should probably be eating closer to 2000 calories, and it's fine to get 50-60% of them form carbs.

Last year I had my body fat measured by calipers, but they did it very quickly and only in the top half of my body.  It came out to 23%.  A few months later they did it the same way, and it came out as 22%.  A few months after THAT (just the other day) my BF was measured with that machine that you grip, and it came out to 18.5%.  I asked my trainer and he said that since the caliper method only measured fat from my waist up, and since the machine can also be flawed, that I should just average out the two numbers and assume my body fat is somewhere around 20%.  What would you guys assume?

I'm 5'6", measurements 34-24-37, weight 120 lb.  I do have some visible muscle tone, but also some visible cellulite...so I really doubt my BF is that low.

I got down to 12% (measured by hydrostatic weighing, I also had visible abs and quads, no breast tissue left AT ALL) and still had cellulite. Cellulite is a very poor indicator of body fat percentage.

Why are you still here.... haven't you already posted your point of view to this thread?  Move on and let us have a conversation.  Thanks

This is a public forum, anyone and everyone is permitted to contribute.

If you are that uncomfortable hearing an opposing/challenging viewpoint about a diet you personally adhere to, I think that speaks volumes about the dogmatic nature of said diet. It also says a lot about how open you are to the possibility that there are other equal (or even superior) ways of eating and losing weight.

It is all quite reminiscent of the cognitive dissonance and willful ignorance employed by the fanatically religious.

You and Ambereva come off as pretty dogmatic to me.  Not saying I don't understand where you are coming from to some extent, but the way you go about it could be better.

Rather than telling people that they are being dogmatic and don't have to restrict foods.  Letting them know that they "may not" need to restrict foods and why would be much better.  Restricting certain foods for some is a way of avoiding foods that trigger bad dietary habits.  When I eat any starchy foods I tend to overeat.  If I avoid them I don't.  I wish it were easy to just eat a moderate amount of those foods...but it isn't as easy as it sounds at least for me.

"I'm not dogmatic, YOU are."

Classic redirection technique.

Eat what you want dude. Just don't go around telling people it's the 'natural human diet' or some such nonsense, and calling people addicts because they enjoy eating foods that are forbidden by your guru.

@Reehee, low carb works for losing weight, especially if you're sedentary. I restricted the high glycemic carbs heavily when I was losing weight because they were the least satiating. But I never completely eliminated them, and ate them more and more as I used exercise to keep losing weight. This afternoon I was dragging, so I ate a candy bar before going up several flights of stairs to retrieve some bottles. The high glycemic carbs in a candy bar are made for this kind of this activity, and they kept me going until dinner 2 hours later.

Fiber doesn't have any digestible calories.

I ate a pint of ice cream before my workout today.

Haha masoyama. A year has gone by and my weight is maintained for another year by calorie counting. Many people experience regain after weight loss but that's true of any diet. If you don't pick one that you can stay on permanently, the weight comes back. Calorie counting enforces my decision to eat anything I like so long as I keep a small calorie deficit.

Mine too, that's five years now.

I don't give my clients meal plans. I give them 'permission' to eat whatever they want (people don't need 'permission' but sometimes they need to hear someone SAY they don't need permission). Most of them have already been through the restriction/fad diet gauntlet and are completely fed up with it and ready to just trust their body.

I love when you are around. :)

Some people need to cut out food groups based on medical issues like colitis, allergies, etc. Many people can't tolerate grains.

I don't necessarily agree that legumes are as "evil" as paleo makes them out to be, especially if u prep them properly. Study after study has shown their benefits and i think they would make a great addition to a paleo plan. Dr fuhrman holds Legumes in high esteem and they have many anti cancer benefits and other valuable nutrients. The also support good flora balance due to resistant starch

It'ss sad that there is so much dietary dogma. It's hard to separate fact from someone trying to make a profit or from someone trying to support an agenda

Amber, what do u have ur clients doing for a meal plan?  There has to be healthy guidelines besides just "listen to ur body"... So many of us has skewed perceptions of what our bodies need and what is healthy that having guidelines is beyond beneficial, especially until we get to the point where we CaN listen to our bodies (and hopefully our bodies tell us what we need in healthy terms!)

I am sorry, I don't really see how anyone can consider eating loads of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meets, fish, and nuts a "load of dietary dogma" that could  "run your metabolic health into the ground."  The Paleo Diet is backed up by numerous scientific studies that have been written up in peer reviewed, scientific journals, and is extremely healthy with a wide variety of options for many different tastes.  It basically just cuts out grains, dairy, processed foods, and sugars.  You don't have to eat this way, no one is asking you to do so, so why do you feel the need to swear at and attack others who want to talk to one another about it?  Can't you just ignore this

How can I consider paleo (and other highly restrictive diets) a load of dietary dogma that drives metabolic health into the ground? Because I've worked with dozens of women who've experience just exactly that. I could tell you some really eye-opening stories. Hair loss, reproductive dysfunction, thyroid dysfunction, depression, the list of symptoms goes on and on.

I can't ignore it because I deal with the ramifications every day. Dietary restrictions are bad news. The only reason a person should engage in these kinds of restrictions is medical illness.

I have been Primal for over a year.... lost 35 lbs, now at normal BMI, feel great, and LOVE good food! I don't miss grain and sugar and I certainly don't miss processed or fast food. I mentally gag when I think of people putting that stuff in their mouths. I do eat potatoes about once or twice a month, but I usually try to make it sweet potatoes. I also eat rice occasionally because I live for sushi.  All in all, I am soooooo happy I found this lifestyle and I will never go back.

And this is one of the main issues I have with dietary dogma. It sets up a mentality that you have superior knowledge and make superior choices, and drives divisiveness and judgmental attitudes.

Any diet that has rules about what I'm 'allowed' to eat is ****. I'm 'allowed' to eat whatever I want.

People need to stop eating what other people TELL them to eat and start listening to their own bodies.

Very well said, Amber ;)

Some people's bodies tell them to eat like ****, so how would you help these people Ambereva?? People need education and guidance to understand how best to nourish their body. They don't need a disingenuous comment like "listen to your body." For me, thanks to the guidance of multiple online resources and literature that I've read, I've found that Paleo satisfies both my lifestyle and my nutritional requirements.

I'm glad that "listening to your body" has worked so well for you. But one has to then wonder what the **** you are doing on Calorie Count.

If your body is fat and sick it's telling you that what you're eating is not working for you. That's what listening to your body means. Paying attention to how it RESPONDS to the food you eat.

That's nice that paleo is working for you NOW, google 'catecholamine honeymoon' though. You're better served paying attention to your body from the get-go rather than swallowing a load of dietary dogma and letting it run your metabolic health into the ground.

I want to lose the the pounds bc I want to lose the excess body fat...I'm happy with the muscle that I have and I don't really want to add more. I can still see a little layer of fat though which is what is bothering me. I'm trying to focus more on the measurements, so dropping another inch off my waist and an inch and a half off my hips but I can't see that happening in 3lbs. It's frustrating bc I thought I would be happier in the 130s but I'm not.

You won't be happier in the 120's either, because happiness isn't dependent on weight.
