| Weight Loss | 45 pounds lighter seems like a lifetime away :( Need advice... | Dec 18 2007 21:50 (UTC) |

| I don't ever think of the whole picture, it's too overwhelming. I don't even know how many pounds I had to go when I started - I never did the math. I focus on the next 9. Right now I'm at 185, so my next 9 is 179. Piecing it out to 10 lb increments really works for me. When it doesn't, I just remind myself that I could still be 228 lbs! Or worse, I might have gotten heavier! | |||

| When I started out last summer my doctor told me that the most important thing I can do for myself is to get my calories under control. Exercise and everything else comes secondary to controlling your intake of food. Remember that keeping your calories under control does not mean you have to refrain from enjoying the holidays or eating the holiday foods. If you are stressed out from dieting, then stay away from the scale and allow yourself to eat your maintenance calories. This way, when the holidays are over you won't feel like you've set yourself back. | |||

| Weight Loss | Did I put myself in Starvation mode? If yes, how to get out of it without packing on pounds? | Dec 18 2007 02:53 (UTC) |

First of all, I'm so sorry about your miscarrages. That's a huge bummer. As far as calorie deficits - you are probably not in starvation mode. It's best to keep it under 1000 caloires a day, so you can bump your calories up about 200 calories a day; but don't worry about being in starvation mode - your deficits aren't that extreme and you haven't been at that level for too long, so I really doubt you've done any damage to your metabolism. I started out eating too few calories and figured it out when I felt really fatigued. It sounds like you're not there. Even so, I wasn't all the way into starvation, I was just fatigued! A deficit of 500 cal/day = 1 lb/week weight loss A deficit of 750 cal/day = 1.5 lb/week weight loss A deficit of 1000 cal/day = 2 lb/week weight loss More than 1000 cal/day can lead to muscle loss and eventually to "starvation mode". But again - I think you caught on soon enough that you are probably fine.

Thanks everyone! It's so great to hear all of the cheerleading!! It was an interesting exercise for me to put those photos together. I focus so much sometimes on how flabby and overweight I feel, so it's great to see the pictures together and be assured that I've come a long way and look much better! Sometimes photos seem to show something that the mirror doesn't. |

| There's nothing wrong with eating full-fat foods, you just have to control your portions to keep your calories within your daily goals. Low-fat and non-fat foods do us no favors except to allow us to eat a little more, they are not miracle diet-foods. | |||

| I was just wondering the same thing - I went through a break-up on Friday and on Saturday I weighed-in really low. Since Saturday, my anxiety has abated and my weight has rebounded a bit. Maybe there is a relationship between stress and a quick short-term weight loss. | |||
| Weight Loss | Cold weather is sabotaging my diet! | Dec 17 2007 23:17 (UTC) |

1300 is okay if you can stand it - but it's not going to set you back much if you stick to 1500 calories a day. The cold weather is temporary - your new life of calorie counting is for the duration! Actually, when I opened the thread I thought you were going to say that you had gone for the macaroni and cheese and were eating 3500 calories a day, so I have to congratulate you for being at 1500 calories when you felt like your diet had been "sabotaged"! Good work!! Stay warm! |

| Weight Loss | TOO MUCH of a deficit? | Dec 17 2007 23:13 (UTC) |

1000 calories of deficit a day is okay - just make sure you don't go over 1000 calories. That seems to be the maximum number that people agree won't cause muscle loss. I have found that the CC activity calculator seems to underestimate for me, so I aim for a calculator deficit of 700 a day, and that has kept me going at a 2 lb/week weight loss - which means I'm really at a 1000 calorie deficit. Also, pay attention to your body. If you are too low, you will start to feel fatigued. |

They're convenient if you are desperately pinched for time - but really they're not too different from eating a big cookie. They may have been fortified with vitamins and minerals, but they're still a lot of calories for what you're getting. |

The 7 * my weight says I should eat a little over 1200 calories a day.
So...according to the poster's logic...it must be a divine miracle that I've lost over 40 pounds eating 2000 calories a day. I'll stick to 2000 caloires a day and look forward to 2 lbs a week weight loss and healthy hair/skin/internal organs!!! |

humorpam: After 21 days at 193 I dropped to 184. 9 lbs! Which means just a bit over 2 lbs a week over the month. I didn't change what I was doing - I kept my deficits and workouts the same. It's been normal for me to only post weight loss when I get my TOTM. I've leaned to trust it. |

Hang in there, Girl! You've lost 12 lbs, which is awesome. Even if you haven't lost weight in the last couple of weeks, if you keep sticking to your calorie goals the weight will come off. I just dropped a bunch of pounds after being stuck at the same weight for 21 days. Sometimes you just have to have a little faith in the calorie deficits. They DO work, and the weight WILL come off. Keep reminding yourself of the 12 lbs you've lost and celebrate them! |

This is a great article about how there was never any evidence that a low-fat diet would keep people from gaining weight, despite the popularity of that notion in the 80s and 90s. Weight loss and weight gain come from an imbalance of dietary calories, and it doesn't matter if those calories come from fat, protein or carbohydrates.

Congrats on that 46 lbs lost! In the end, it doesn't matter how fast or slow it comes off - as long as it comes off.
I have a definite pattern - hold one weight for three weeks, and then drop several pounds all at once. The weight loss happens in about 5 days during and after my TOTM. Then I will hold that weight until my next TOTM, and see a loss. It's great to know what the pattern is. I don't sweat it when I'm working hard and don't see a weight loss as I know that it will come off eventually. Lucky for me, I know exactly when I will get to see the loss! |

| You should not eat below 1200 calories a day. 1200 is the minimum, which means that it's not enough for you unless you are elderly and sedentary. Since you have been eating 1200 for a while and that has kept you going and ED free, it's probably okay for you to stay at that level, but it's not okay to go below. Not for you, and not for any woman. | |||
