Weight Loss MOM OF A TODDLER; need motivation, support, tips, advice!!!!!! Jun 12 2013

I am in the same boat.  I have an 18 month old, and gained 55 lbs with him.   I lost all but 10 lbs in the first year, then we bought a house and the stress of the move caused me to pack 10 lbs back on.  I am now 20 lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight.

Age: 29

Height: 5'2, small frame

Current weight: 137

Goal weight: 117

A few things I've noticed that  are very different with a toddler:

1) no time to exercise/feel guilty if I leave to exercise

2) eating what they eat or finishing their meal if they don't finish it.

3) comfort foods at night after they go to bed.

Can anyone else relate to those 3 things?  They are what I'm trying to change in order to get back on track.

For anyone who is exercising and has a toddler, what are you doing for exercise?

I know this is an old post and not sure if the OP is even checking it but just wanted to add that you could try an e-cigarette, that way you'd get the nicotine without the smoke and extra chemicals that come from regular cigarettes.  I used to be a smoker/dipper/anything nicotine-er and have been a runner on and off since I was a kid..  I stopped smoking when I got pregnant 2 years ago but every now and then I'll take a few drags of an e-cigarette and it doesn't affect my running at all.

After one day of counting I've discovered what my problem is.  I'm not eating enough for breakfast/lunch, mostly because I'm busy, and I've been eating a lot of calories after dinner because I'm genuinely hungry.  And they have been empty calories like potato chips and ice cream.   I need to get some healthy snacks in the house and I think I can kick this habit.  Thanks again everyone :)

I am currently 141 lbs and 5'2. My goal weight is 120 lbs (for now).  I have already lost 30 lbs of pregnancy weight, but have been stalled at 141 for 5 weeks.

The calculator on this site http://nutritiondata.self.com/tools/calories- burned  gives me a goal of 2247 for sedentary ad 2489 for lightly active.  I am mostly in a small apartment taking care of the baby all day, plus housework.

I could have written this post after my son was born. I'm 5'2" and my weight loss stalled at 140 pounds at about 6 weeks postpartum. I was eating roughly 1,500 calories a day and not exercising at all (besides the occasional walk). My milk supply started to dry up and I was tired all the time.

I wasn't eating enough. As soon as I upped my calories to roughly 2,000 (give or take 100), I started losing again. I continued eating that amount until my son weaned off breastfeeding at 12 months. I made it down to 127 pounds by 4 months postpartum and then bounced between 120 and 125 until, well, now.

The Nutrition Data calculator is probably right considering the running.

Yeah we have the exact same stats!  Well, it's after dinner and I'm only at 1721 calories, and I ran today.   Guess I probably wasn't eating as much as I thought!  I will probably eat a little more to get up to at least 2000.

I disagree with penguinmomma that you'd only be eating 100 calories less than you burn. Taking care of a new baby and doing all of the housework - I think that puts you squarely in the lightly active category, so your deficit is probably closer to 300 calories.

That would allow you to lose just over 0.5lb/week. And if you are EBFing, the calculators estimates could be a little low for you. I'd suggest keeping with the 2100 for a little longer (is that what you've been doing for the 5 weeks that you've been stalled?), and if your weight continues to stay at 141, maybe adjust down to 1900 or so. No need to drop as far down as 1500.

I actually haven't been counting at all, just eating to hunger.  I have no idea how much I've been eating but I would assume close to 2500 because I've been maintaining. Over the last week I cut out sugar in my coffee, and stopped having ice cream after dinner, and my weight still stayed the same.  I'll try 2100 to start with and see how it goes, thank you!

Thanks for the advice, maybe 2100 is still a little high.  I am EBFing and the little dude is in the 97% for weight (hes 2.5 months and already 15.5 lbs) so I need a lot of milk to sustain him.  Pre-preg when I was 117 lbs I was eating 1800 calories a day and still losing.  So I'm guessing I need more than that, but I am also not nearly as active as I was before I got pregnant.

I do not feel like I'm really overeating, just eating to hunger.  Is it ever OK to be hungry while BFing?

Choose your parents. Your tendency towards stretch marks is primarily genetic

Also, don't have a 10 lb baby and too much amniotic fluid.. that'll do it too!  I had no genetic predisposition for stretch marks and didn't get them until I was overdue... skin can only stretch so much!

For those asking about calorie intake while nursing, here is a calculator that takes breastfeeding into account:

http://nutritiondata.self.com/tools/calories- burned

Kalalu: But you have lost weight since your baby was born, right? Are you sure you're eating enough?

Pipnut: I'm also 5'2" and was eating 2,000+ while breastfeeding. I lost weight and did very little exercise. If you're resuming Zumba that does burn 1,000 calories per class (I'm a little wary of this. Do you wear a HR monitor to get this number?), you'll probably have to eat 2,500+ to keep up milk production and weight loss.

Andi: See my advice to Pipnut. Are you sure you're eating enough? My weight loss stalled around the same time yours did when I was trying to take in 1,500 calories a day while breastfeeding. As soon as I increased them, I started losing again.

Sorry, just saw this.  Thank you for the advice.  I eat to hunger and I'm pretty sure I'm overeating.  I'm not counting calories at all but I eat 3 meals plus snacks and have a big bowl of ice cream every night.  I eat a lot of fattening foods.  I'd be really surprised if my calories were lower than 2500/day.  I'll check out that link to get an idea of what I should be eating, I've just been too lazy/busy to even try to count.

I stressed like crazy my whole pregnancy, over everything.  Work was insanely stressful, I did long hours and was an emotional wreck the whole time.  You know what?  It didn't affect the baby whatsoever.  He is beautiful and healthy, born 10 lb 3 oz.  All the stressing did was age me about 5 years, the kid couldn't have cared less in there.

So, stress or don't stress, it probably won't make a lick of difference, if the baby wants to stick around he/she will.  Most miscarriages are due to something you can't control, like a problem with the chromosomal makeup of the baby, and the risk of miscarriage drops wayyy lower after 12 weeks.

I had my baby on November 15th.  I had gained 55 lbs during pregnancy and he was a 10 lb baby. I am exclusively breastfeeding, and my son is in the 95th% for weight and height.  I lost 30 lbs of my pregnancy weight within the first 3 weeks!  However, I'm stalled on the last 25 lbs to get back to my fighting weight of 117 at 5'2.  I have been hovering at 141 lbs for 5 weeks.

For me, breastfeeding took off the 30 lbs I needed for pregnancy quickly but hasn't done anything so far for the OVEREATING weight I gained while pregnant...

Hi! I used to be a regular on this site then got pregnant in February 2011.  I'm a nursing mom too.  My baby is almost 8 weeks old, and I want to get a head start on getting back into shape.

Before I was pregnant, I was 116 lbs (after 2 years of calorie counting and running).   I got up to 172 lbs at the end of my pregnancy, and am now at 141.   My first goal is 130 lbs, then I will take it from there.

I am not counting calories at all right now, and just eating to hunger because I have a huge baby and I don't want my supply to suffer.   However, I've added in 2 mile runs every other day since getting the OK from my doc to start exercising.

Anyone have success with not calorie counting and just exercising while breastfeeding in order to lose weight slowly?

Do you have the right running shoes?   Also, terrain makes a difference.  Running downhill is, I find, a lot harder on the body than running uphill or on flat terrain. I second what rasmom said: try running on a track to start, the synthetic material is much more forgiving than pavement.  I also read somewhere to avoid concrete and go for road tar if you have a choice.  Concrete is really hard and kills my joints if I run on it.

You might also need to slow down, running outside inherently has more challenges than running on the treadmill, and speed shouldn't be an issue until you've gotten your mileage up outside.

Basically, what you are describing is not unusual and as long as you are careful, you will build up all the small muscles necessary to have a more comfortable run outside.

Eat more!  You are definitely not eating enough.  You need to fuel  your body to continue losing weight and to be active.    I'd say at least 1800 calories a day.

Weighed this morning...115.6!!  It's probably just a drop in water weight, but I'll take it.

Today I'm planning on power yoga after work.  Didn't work out at all yesterday, was too busy.   Hoping to get a good run in tomorrow or Sunday.

How's everyone doing?

I'm in the same boat..can I join the group?  I'm 27, 5'2, around 117.  I'm looking to get down to about 110-112.  Currently on 1600-1800 calories, exercising 5 or 6 times a week. Just started trying to lose the extra weight last week.

What are you girls looking at for calories?  Since we're all around the same weight maybe we can help each other with realistic calorie goals.

Do other people here find the calories on the calculator low? They seem super low to me.

Yes.  The calculator tells me to eat 1200 calories to lose the 4 or 5 lbs I am looking to lose, and I would starve (this is even with leaving the goal date blank, at "light activity").  I eat 500-600 more than that, and have lost so much weight this past 1.5 weeks that I might up them even more.

Well I'm certainly not ripped, but compared to noodle arms like I had before, it seems to be doing something for me.  Did you do power yoga?  To me, that's definitely a workout.
