Weight Loss walk to work - anyone doing it? Dec 01 2009

Thank you for tips and positive words, everybody.  This is great!!  I was a little reluctant (thought people would think I am crazy Embarassed) and you guys really encouraged me.  I came back to CC (was a member 1.5 yrs ago) for a medical reason and I really need an 1 hr walk a day (no jogging or running; walking was all my PCP and RD wanted).  Thank you!!

Weight Loss Any Opinions on the "Up Day Down Day Diet"? Nov 24 2009

This thread got my attention because I just read an article about a study conducted at U of I at Chicago that was published this Nov.  What the researchers did sounded quiet similar but then the researchers also said that this concept had been around for 20 yrs.  So I guess it is not new.

According to the website provided by OP, I would need to eat 504 cal for my Down Days and 1680 cal for my Up Days.  That is when I choose a level (30%) that is very close to a loss/maintenance mode. If I choose level 1 (20%), I would need to eat 336 cal.  I think even ED people wouldn't eat this little (or do they?  I might be wrong Embarassed; no clue about it)

I almost can see myself dying - starved to death Wink.  The Chicago researchers did their study with people over 200 lbs.  For the clinically obese group (I think it was their term), there might be more advantages by taking an extreme approach.   We all are aware of the bad chain reactions that could be caused by obesity.  But for people who are just overweight like me, I just cannot believe I can eat 336 or 504 cal yet survive for even one day.

I think if anyone wants to try it, it would be better for the person to consult with a doctor before putting it in action.  That would be the bare minimum.  What if it really harms your body.....  The study was under professionals' monitoring and if they see some harmful effects on participants, I am sure they would pull them out and do something.  They wouldn't let them drown.....

Weight Loss Success Stories, Reality, How did u do it? Nov 24 2009

Ok, I am reading the success stories and people are losing 20 and 40 lbs in the first month. My entire goal is 35 lbs. I want to know the secret.

....  Why haven't I lost 20 lbs in a month?

No offense here but I think it might be better for you to read some success stories from CC.  I know some crazy sites are out there claiming a quick fix that doesn't really exist.  Here, people's real success stories involve 1 year (not 1 month) commitment or actually longer than 1 year.  I am most impressed when people are saying that it took a couple of years to reach their goal weight.  I don't really buy a quick fix story.  I think you haven't lost 20 lbs in a month because you are not supposed to lose that fast.  Just my 2 cents.

Motivation Help...huge weight gain in 2 weeks...can this be right? Nov 24 2009

Yes, totally possible.  I have 2 scales at home.  When I put them side by side and weigh myself, I always find that the old cheap one gives me lower # - almost always by 3 lbs.  That might be why I still keep it Embarassed.   Also when I weigh AM vs. PM, usually there are 2-4 lbs differences.  Thus, if you are talking about 2 different scales, I wouldn't be shocked by 6 lbs differences.  Don't get discouraged!!  There is no way (or at least I think...) you really gained 6 lbs of body fat in 2 weeks by eating 1200 cal.

To be honest, my exercise routine is not especially intensive.  I live in a very pedestrian friendly area and just make an effort to walk at a brisk clip when I have errands around the neighborhood.  Between errands and other excuses, I probably 'speed walk' 5-10 miles a week.

Thanks for the tip!!  I am also mainly doing 'speed walk' (both my PCP and RD ordered me to walk for 1 hr for 6-7 days a week due to my medical condition; no intensive workout).  Hope I can be you soon (and by soon, I mean like a year) Laughing

Your weight loss graph really impressed me.  Hope you don't mind one more question.  What kind of exercise did you do?  Because I am a lot shorter than you (I am 5'15 but I always round up and say I am 5'2 Embarassed), I am sure that you and I would need different food intake.  However, I would love to know your exercise routine.  Thanks!!

Congrats!!  Your hard work over 1 year is paid off so nicely!!  I want to have the same experience someday (although it won't happen while I shop since I have all sizes from size 4 to size 12).  I think it would be a really nice surprise to find out I am down not just one size but three sizes!!  So from size 10 to size 4, how much did you lose and how tall are you? (only if you don't mind sharing; ignore this question if you are not comfortable)

I cannot believe that it is the old picture of you that is from a few years back.  You look much younger nowWink.  I would've believed the after pic is from a few years ago if you didn't tell.   Congrats!!!

I go back to my childhood and collect stickers.  When I get 50 stickers, I buy something (usually, I decide what to buy in advance; right now, it is 1-hr massage).  It is simple but very effective.

Congrats!!  Just checked your gallery.  You look awesome!!   Great inspiration.   I just needed a real story like yours.  This is a long journey and I know it; however, too many ads are out there giving a false hope of a quick fix.

Do you drink enough water?  I've heard that sometimes when you think you are hungry, actually you are just thirsty.  Also, I've heard that feeling tired due to calorie restriction can be lessened by drinking enough water.

I agree with Chrissy re. candies and alcohol.  They cannot be the reason.

I have a mixed feeling about this and agree with the posts before me.  I also have a Tanita.  I know #s are different from my calipered reading (done by a personal trainer at a gym).  However, it shows the progress as long as I use my Tanita under same condition (same hydration level and so on - first thing in the morning after bathroom without drinking water).  If you really want accurate #, then probably you need to be calipered by an experienced person (if the performer is not experienced, it won't be done correctly).  If you want to follow the trend of body fat loss, I think Tanita will do the magic.  Just my 2 cents.

Weight Loss 3500 calories = 1lb of .... Oct 29 2009

It's fat.  1 lb of muscle is a lot less than 3500 cal.  As far as I recall, it is appx. 1700 cal = 1 lb of muscle or something like that.  So if you find someone saying s/he lost 2 lbs by creating 5000 cal deficit, it would probably be the mixture of fat and muscle (and possibly some water too).  To burn pure 2 lbs of fat, it does require 7000 cal deficit.

First of all, it is hard to lose the last 10lbs for most of us.  Many of us even don't reach the final goal weights because we set too ideal goals - impossible to reach in some cases. Our bodies may simply like to be a bit curvier than our minds want to.  I am not talking about you - your goal sounds very reasonable (although it depends on how tall you are).  Nonetheless, it could take longer than you are hoping for.  I think it is OK to buy one or two pairs of your favorite jeans.  I would dream for the future but enjoy every moment.   Just my 2 cents.

Sing and dance for 2 days; then sing and dance again for another 2 days; then check my weights every Sunday, go to gym 3-4 times a week, eat healthy, be active ....  and get a massage every other month if I keep the weight off.

Been repeated enough to know that losing is actually easier (relatively speaking; it is of course not easy in an absolute term) and keeping is the hardest.

Will also put my before and after pictures somewhere (cannot decide yet....  since I don't want others (who would visit me) to see them; family is fine - been there seen that).

Happily donate everything that is bigger for the new me at the goal weight.

This time, I am so determined to keep the weight off (when I reach my goal).

Thank you all!!  You are the best!!  Now, I need to decide between Sanyo, Cuisinart, and Foreman Wink but I am sure I will be safe with any of those!!  Also, thanks for the tip re. Good Will type stores.  I am sure this grill will help me to eat meats and other stuff in healthier ways.

If this is one day thing (e.g., wedding dress), try a body shaper.  Depending on your currents weight, it might be possible for you to fit in that dress by just wearing a good body shaper.

mgrondin - then we are both in the same boat... not understanding

Hmm, I am with mgrondin.  An average score cannot be lower than the lowest score; if you eat between 1400 and 1800 cals, there is no way the average can be less than 1400 cal.
