Oh, one thing I would suggest- get rid of the potassium in the analysis section. It isn't accurate....at least I don't think it is. It gives me a huge potassium deficit every day, but potassium isn't listed in the nutrition section of the foods I log.....so how can it be tabulated?

No, not liking it. Sorry. I would rather see how much I have eaten and decide myself for the day, based on my activity, what kind of deficit I want. Some days I want a 500 calorie deficit and some days I don't. I'd rather figure it out myself.

I have no clue what the analysis bar is saying now. Please bring back the old one. It worked,  it gave me useful information. I am not opposed to change, but I am opposed to fixing what isn't broken. You're only making my blood pressure go up.....lol

Weight Loss Swimming question---calories burned? Jul 07 2011

The activity log for swimming specifies a speed, so it will calculate the calories according to your body weight. I think the "swimming lesiurely" choice is probably right for you according to what you have described. It may not be leisurely to you, but it sounds accurate.

I swim 25 yards in 30 seconds when i am working at my hardest, and I would call it "vigorous" but apparently not so according to the description....LOL.

Sounds like you are doing a fantastic job! Swimming steadily for an hour is no small thing- I think you should be quite proud. You are changing up the strokes which will help your body exercise different parts, and will also keep you from getting bored. Hang in there - I have found it takes awhile to improve one's speed, but, boy, does it help to tone the body, and keep your joints limber. I have never once gotten out of the pool, even with my hardest workout, and felt sore. Tired, yes, but never sore. And I lost 35 pounds with swimming and calorie counting.

Foods Vitamins.... Feb 19 2011

. I never meet potassium, I usually get about 2,000ish mg a day but I probably get more than that, it's just not counted on CC.

Oh, so you mean the foods we are logging are possibly not taking potassium content into account? That would make sense. I can't believe I am taking in only 50% of my required Potassium intake. I think that would make me dead......

Weight Loss Water Intake Feb 17 2011

Too much water can casue a condition called water intoxication, where your sodium level is diluted, which affects the brain cells. It can be very dangerous. Usually we just urinate off what we don't need, but too much at one time- more than the kidneys can handle- can be dangerous. I think the recommendations from other posters here are much more reasonable.

Good question. You can access the list of suggested foods in the analysis function by dragging the mouse over the element and click on "Foods high in ....."  - this will give you some suggestions.

I am a firm believer in eating a balanced diet rather than relying on vitamins, but they do have their place. That being said, I struggle with the same 4 areas that you do. I found that 1/4 cup of carrots gave me all the vitamin A I needed, I bumped up my cereal for breakfast by 1/2 a serving and got all the iron I needed, and I don't worry about fiber. Personally, I think their estimate for fiber is a little high. If I eat 25 gm like they suggest, I am in the bathroom all day.

Potassium- just can't ever seem to get this high enough. That's my current project.

Motivation What do you once with your clothes once you have dropped a size? Feb 13 2011

I do it in phases. I pack up the larger size clothes and store them, by season, in a plastic bin and stash it away. I figure if I can keep the weight off for an entire season cycle (like from one winter to the next), then I can safely give away the big clothes.

I haven't reached it yet- in fact, I gained back about 10 pounds of the 35 I lost last year. I am not worried- i know how to lose it, so I will lose it again, but I was glad I hung onto the old clothes- I had to dig around for larger size ski clothes this winter. Clothes are expensive- i can't stand the thought of going out and buying more.

Foods Broccoli Could Very Well Be... Feb 13 2011

So, all of you broccoli lovers- it doesn't give you gas?

I absolutely LOVE broccoli- could eat it every day. Unfortunately, it makes me socially unacceptable. Sigh.

And asparagus makes my pee smell like....asparagus + pee.

If you enjoy swimming, it will  help your midsection alot. I always have great success with this.

I don't know that I will ever have a flat stomach. So I decided long ago that wasn't a goal that was even remotely significant. Personally I think a flat stomach is over-rated. And I think alot of it has to do with genetics.

Try using the analysis function and see where the distribution of nutrients lands. I don't follow it to a tee (depending on whether or not i am losing or maintaining) but it is very helpful. Sometimes I am amazed by how low my protein is with my choices in a certain day, so i know to ramp up the protein calories and cut back on something else. Your diet sounds extremely low in protein, and you could replace some of the fruits with a little fat and a few grains. A well balanced diet will leave you fairly well satisfied.

I think 300 calories is pretty good, but what's missing from the equation is to have a midmorning snack after that- about another 100 calories or so. I couldn't survive on 300 calories in the morning and nothing more till lunch. I'd start chewing on my arm.....

I have a bowl of cheerios as soon as I get up, and then some fruit and yogurt mid-morning, or yogurt with nutella, or yogurt and peanut butter, or yogurt and peanut butter powder, or just plain yogurt.

I think I figured it out. I put in 1/4 cup of almonds, and item 28662 shows that 1/4 cup of almonds is 220 grams of carbs....however 1/4 cup of any other kind of almonds is about 6 grams...which is what the package that I have also says. CalorieCount- could you fix that?

Foods Need to lower sodium intake Oct 24 2010

Sodium is more a problem for me than fats.....glad to see I am not the only one! I thought cottage cheese was God's gift to dieters....until i saw the sodium. Same with tomatoes. And tuna fish (without the mayo).

My only suggestion is to use the food log function here, and read, read, read labels, and figure out which foods are the biggest culprits. I have had to rethink many of my favorite recipes - as they called for lots of canned stuff (I love to cook in the crockpot and everything calls for canned soups, canned tomatoes, etc.). My favorite salad dressings were loaded with sodium.

I usually allow myself one high-sodium food per day, and then scrimp everywhere else. I try not to buy anything high in sodium, like canned soups, or processed meat, certain salad dressings, or frozen prepared foods, etc. If it's not there, I won't eat it.

It is tough, though. I have to admit it's my biggest challenge. Calories I can do - sodium I am not so good at.

Weight Loss Ok, I have a question about water weight vs. real weight Oct 10 2010

I agree with spirochete- but the carbs that hang on to water the most are sugar. Salt does it, too. Salt and sugar can hang onto an incredible amount of water, and it takes a couple of days to get rid of it. (And what do we eat when we PMS? Salt and sugar. Chocolate covered potato chips, anyone?)

Relax, be patient, and, ironically, drink alot of water. Lay low on the sugar and lay low on the salt.

8 pounds is equal to about 3.5-4 kilograms. 4 liters of water weighs 4 kg. That's alot of fluid, and it's very possible for a female who still menstruates to retain that amount. Fortunately, it's temporary.

Fitness learning swimming Jun 06 2010

I would make sure you are learning how to swim from a certified swimming instructor. They know how to guide people through learning how to breathe correctly, how to float correctly, and how to swim without tiring. It's a skill that if you don't learn correctly can actually do more harm - i.e. swimming with your head out of the water is very exhausting and makes you sink.

Good luck on your venture - swimming is a wonderful thing to learn.

what do u mean? i dont use 1, no one in my family does nor do i know anyone that uses it yet none of these ppl are morbidly obese.

maybe if you ARE then i could see how it might be appropriate tho and again, no offense, ive just never seen one or know anyone who has 1.

You don't have to be morbidly obese or scathingly skinny to not know how big 3 ounces of meat is, or 1 ounce of cheese - i would have a difficult time trying to squash those into a measuring cup.......by the way, diabetics have used food scales to portion their food for decades.
