|Weight Loss||spirulina: appetite-supressant or not? experiences?||Apr 10 2007
With supplements, a lot depends on how much you get per dosage and how pure it is. Spirulina itself makes a dandy fish food! And it contains a complete protein which makes it quite a treasure in the plant kingdom. It may be the protein that helps with your cravings. It also contains most of the B's so if you eat due to stress it could be helping your body deal with stress better.
If it works for you, I see no downside to taking it.

|I myself was an overweight child. What I would say is make sure you develop habits now that you can carry over into your adulthood. Run, walk, bike... The fact that you are walking the dog for 30 min a day is excellent! The dog enjoys it I bet. You could extend that by 5 or 10 min or maybe up the tempo and walk farther. Maybe see if you can acquire or borrow a pedometer. That's how I get the bulk of my cardio exercise. I take a dog (I have three) out every day for 2-3 miles. I find the pedometer is a great motivator. It's great when I see I can walk farther. Eat more veggies & fruits and less unhealthful foods. Watch your portions when you do eat less wholesome foods. But by no means starve yourself, this is a time in life when you should be eating more than you will be allowed later.|
|Weight Loss||To the 5'5 - 5'6 ladies, how many calories do you eat each day?!||Apr 05 2007
I'm allowed 1500 calories per day, but I seldom eat more than 1200. I exercise daily (a 45 minute 2.5 mi walk--I'm trying to up the tempo right now by jogging a bit from time to time) and am next going to add in strength training when my home gym arrives (I'm afraid of hurting myself with free weights and both hubby & I can use this 24-7 so this seems like a better alternative to a gym membership).
My doc has OKed this regime because the extra weight is a clear and present danger to my health right now, so getting it off is paramount. If, after a while, I start to plateau, then I'll consider pharmaceutical or surgical techniques. It's working right now though, since Feb I've lost 35 lb! I've not felt hungry (though I've learned the difference between I'm hungry and I'm depressed or bored), I've not skipped meals, and most importantly, all of what I consider to be my important stats have gone in a good direction. The BP is down, the glucose levels are down, the pulse rate is down!

|If grilled salmon or chicken is available, I'll usually go for that requesting that it be served with no sauce, butter etc. Then I ask for a steamed vegetable on the side. I don't eat the breads and if salad is part of the meal, I eat it with a squeezed lemon portion on it but no dressing or croutons. I then assume that at least a TB of butter has gone into both the meat and the veg and adjust the calorie counts that way. If it's a Mexican joint, I usually go with grilled steak or chicken taco hold the cheese, sour cream etc., no beans, no rice, and 15 chips max (loaded with a lot of Pico de Galle if available).|
