Weight is not what will stop you from doing something. Lack of determination and being generally unfit might, though. Basically, if you think you can do something, you probably can. I used to run miles when I was clinically obese. It was hard. I would end up drenched in sweat and wheezing. But I mean, whatever. It didn't kill me. Karate shouldn't be too crazy, I'm sure you'll do great.

Weight Loss College Student - looking for weight-loss/maintenance buddy! Mar 23 2010

Welcome to CC, Nicole! I just graduated from college and reached my goal weight of 135 (I am 5'10.5"), and am currently working on maintaining/toning. You're pretty tall, so I'd recommend eating at least 1500 calories a day - it really helps with binge prevention. As for weird cravings ... I drink a ton of Hansen's Diet Ginger Ale. It has 0 calories, 0 sodium, and a lot of ginger flavor, which totally kills my appetite for some unknown reason.

Yes, thank you so much! That sums up the interactions of those two hormones quite nicely. It's kind of a tangent, but I wonder what percentage of the population has these genetic pre-dispositions, and whether or not that correlates with current obesity/ED prevalence. In the US, for example, approximately 34% of the population is obese, and obesity has risen 50% in the past 10 years. On the other hand, the UK has a 23% obesity rate, but that rate has risen 300% in the past 20 years. So, I guess my question is - could there possibly be a genetic ceiling on obesity that is related to leptin/ghrelin and insulin (ie, those who have the pre-disposition to eat continuously in the face of unlimited available calories vs. those who self-regulate)? It's not really a question I expect anyone to answer, but more something to consider.

Weight Loss On the verge of M&Ms...need some help Mar 15 2010

Can you find someone to share them with? OR, do you think you have enough willpower to immediately throw half of them in the trash, eating only the remaining 20-25 m&m's? If you think you can do that, then go for it. It sounds kind of crazy (throwing away candy!?) but it helped me lose 75 lbs. It might be a waste, but at least it's going into the trash instead of to your thighs.

I agree with the above posters - you're probably due for some growth. When I was 13, I was 5'6" and looked a little chubby at 145 lbs. Then, I shot up to 5'10.5" and ended up at 130ish lbs over the summer (before I turned 14) - which was very thin. I went from chubby to lanky in a period of a few months, so yeah. See what happens.

Oh, I used to have this issue, and I hated it. My 6'2" boyfriend stepped on the scale one day, and it said 158. I weighed 151 (I am 5'10.5") at the time. I nearly had a heart attack, especially because my weight of 151 was AFTER losing 60 lbs. It's only recently that I've been comfortable standing next to him (CW: 139-141 lbs).

I haven't had a girl scout cookie since I was in the 8th grade, and forgot how amazing they were. Thin mints + trefoils, especially. Also, tagalongs. People keep making Facebook posts about their cookie-eating, and it was wearing down my willpower, so I finally had a few. Delicious trans-fat laden minty goodness! I should have confessed my love for them years ago.

I loved Stacey + Dawn, though I wanted to be more like Mary Ann. Logan was a total hottie, of course. Kristy just annoyed me. Claudia seemed like she was trying too hard, haha. Who was that one redhead who was a 'junior baby sitter'?

Margaret?

And remember Charlotte Johanssen? I remember hearing Scarlett Johansson's name for the first time, and being like 'OMG Kristy's favorite charge!'.

Weight Loss sleeping! vs. eating breakfast Feb 25 2010

should i sacrifice sleep by waking up earlier in order to eat breakfast (which just ends up being extra calories in the day)?  for example: i could potentially wake up at 10 but forego the possibility of eating breakfast.  or i could wake up at 9:30 just to go and eat breakfast.  the problem is that i love breakfast foods - too much.  one bowl of oatmeal easily becomes two or three.  breakfast fruits... mmmm - hard to pass up (hehe, i LOVE fruit).  my breakfast would usually add up to about 1/2 of my caloric intake for the day... so if i wake up later, i wouldn't have the problem of having to be more strict in my eating for the rest of the day.

what do you think?  sleep or food? :P

I mean... when do you go to bed? And does that affect when you eat your last meal? For example, on the weekends, I eat my last meal at like 10 or 11pm, go to bed at 2 or 2:30am, and wake up at 10 to 11am. That leaves a 12ish hour window between dinner/breakfast, which is usually how it is for most people. I think it really depends on your cycle. My first meal on the weekends is what most people would consider brunch or lunch.

Edit: During mid-terms and finals, I fall asleep late, and don't eat much for breakfast (grab some yogurt and an apple) - however, I grub while I study. I seriously eat until I fall asleep during finals, so I don't experience food related fatigue, lol. Lack of sleep, on the other hand...

Weight Loss Reaching AT LEAST 1200 cals Feb 24 2010

its really refreshing to see that some people are really receptive and want to be healthy, thank you for not taking offense at all :) nuts are a great trick. also i hear that dates are really yummy, never had one though. you can also keep raisins, trail mix, granola, and fruit leathers (without added sugars) around!!

Nuts/seeds are an awesome way to get in extra calories. And not just almonds/pecans/walnuts - I like soynuts and flax seeds. Right now I am all about Blue Diamond's Wasabi-flavored almonds. So good.

You kind of have to be careful with nuts, though, 'cause it's easy to go overboard.

If I'm below my calories for the day, I like to have a couple of slices of crispbread with some spreadable cheese (I like Champignon Brie - the creamier, the better). Another favorite is a mug of dark drinking chocolate made with whole milk.

Weight Loss Is there really any point in couning calories in fruits and veggies? Feb 24 2010

a calorie it is a unit of measure. There are not apple calories and candy bar calories. What I think you mean is a 100 calories of apple is alot better for you than 100 cals. of pie. It is like the old what weighs more a pound of feathers or a pound of steel. I log everything that way I know where i stand for the day. The only things I don't log are coffee (black) and water.

This.

Ok....maybe this is a dumb question, but we want to eat lots of fruits and veggies (with no other dressings and whatnot added). Yes, they have some calories, but does that really count? They are really healthy for you and it doesn't seem like you really need to add them in your calories? Is this completely wrong thinking? Please enlighten me!

I count my fruits and veggies. Today I had 200 calories worth of raw vegetables (which was an insane amount of food, btw), and 240 calories of fruit. The fruit was 2 blood oranges, and a whole bunch of berries - not really that much. Fruit has a lot of sugar, though - so it adds up quickly. Some vegetables do as well (tomatoes, carrots, etc), thus not counting them can cause some issues.

Oh man, my yay-moment was when I looked at myself in the mirror naked and was actually thrilled with what I saw for the first time in almost a year. That was huge. Also, seeing a candid photo of myself where I didn't look like a balloon. I realized that I could go back to letting myself be photographed, hah.

I have to say I don't think the fact there are a billion overweight people on the planet is anything to be proud of.

Agreed. Though I gained a lot of my weight due to medication, and became clinically obese - it wasn't all medication. The drugs made me lethargic, but I could have counter-acted the lethargy if I weren't so lazy. I could also have eaten less, since I knew I was moving around less. I chose not to, and had to face up to the consequences of my choices and spend the next 7-8 months losing 70 lbs. It was tough, but nowhere near impossible. My mother is overweight, and so is my brother. They eat horribly and don't move much. My father and I are/were not overweight ('til the medicine fiasco), and we ate reasonably/were moderately active. There are some disorders that cause massive weight gain, and I sympathize with those who have to endure that - but for the rest of us, it's usually just poor eating habits/misinformation about food and laziness. Of course, the people on CC are here to try and change that ('cause habits are tough to break), so kudos to everyone for making an effort.

Weight Loss Plateau? Feb 22 2010

Oh, I know what you mean! The little bits of flab left over. I hate that. It goes away with time, though. I actually have no idea what causes it, because it's not just excess skin. It's like, excess skin with a thin layer of fat within it. And as far as I know, the only way to rid yourself of it is with weight/resistance training and a high protein calorie surplus, followed by a period of high protein calorie deficit (like building muscle, then cutting fat, then building muscle again). That's what a few of my guy friends did when they lost a lot of weight, but it took almost a year for them to get really toned.

Weight Loss Plateau? Feb 22 2010

145 seems a bit low for your height. I'm 5'10.5", female, and 140-143 lbs, 20% BF and I look quite thin. Being a male, you'll have less body fat (I think dudes average 12-17% ?) than me, which means that you will look even thinner. If you can't go much lower than 161, then it's probably as Hedgren said: your body is comfortable at its current weight and it will be difficult for you to lose more.

Weight Loss How the atkins diet REALLY works Feb 22 2010

Atkins is kind of crazy, because you're encouraged to eat a lot of fat, and not everyone handles that well. Also, your brain really loves carbs, and depriving it of such results in fogginess, disorientation, and general irritability. It goes away after a few days, but whatever. I mean, sure Atkins works, but I don't know if it would be sustainable for me, personally. I could eat the way I eat right now forever, and that's what is most important to me.

@listedmal I've been toying with the idea of asking them to dig out the bread... but I feel like kind of a ninny asking for that. Do they get the request or do you get a blank stare and have to explain a few times?

They always know what I'm talking about when I ask for it. I'm sure it varies by location, though.
