i like to double check things too.....  one of my secrets is going onto like stopandshop.com and doing the online grocery shopping via peapod...  if you click on an individual item that you want to 'add to your cart' you can get all of the nutrition info for it... so sometimes instead of trusting what cal count has for red kidney beans i'll just go on stop and shop and pull up the actual label from the can of goya red kidney beans.

This only works based on the assumption that the calories on the label is actually accurate... which was the point of the OP.  Wink

OHHH my apologies! I read the original posting as how do you know the labels on caloriecount are correct vs the actual label on the product itself.

thanks!  it definitely is not easy convincing myself to walk, especially now that the weather is turning but its worth it... and proves even if it feels like a little, it can go a long way! (i'm down 16 lbs already from july!)  but yes.. the hours and commute are miserable.. just starting out in a new job at a new company so have to log all of those man hours.....  :(

my biggest problem has been fitting working out into my work schedule as well... im in the office 7am to 6pm  AND i commute about 2 hours each way.... doesn't leave much time or energy to hit the gym.  i started walking from the train station to my office building instead of taking the subway (granted I'm in NY so walking is an option)... this is about a 25 minute walk each way so in the time I'd normally be cramming into the subway I get 50 minutes of walking in... at lunch I'll go outside and walk for another 15 minutes briskly. This way, at the end of a long day even if I can muster up another 10 - 15 minutes to do a 10-minute trainer dvd or some weights I've managed to fit in enough exercise spread throughout the day!

Can I ask a semi related question in this thread?  My daily calorie burn on the exercise meter has been at 1920 since I started. I haven't changed my profile or activity base (I manually enter when I exercise) but I did update my weight loss (16 lbs hooray!) and I noticed the burn meter was down to 1900. Is this due to the weight loss that I now burn slightly less? Thanks!

i don't advocate this type of diet as a permanent lifestyle but if you want a kickstart and results in one month for myself personally if i cut down heavily on carbs I see results right away... keep what you eat healthy (i'm not talking atkins where cheese meat and cheese is what you should eat)..  egg whites, lean proteins (turkey, chicken, turkey bacon), tons of veggies, fish, salads with olive oil and vinegar...  enough to still hit your daily calorie intake but if you leave out the breads and pasta for a month at least for myself the pounds drop off much faster

Foods Mexican Food...What should I order? Nov 17 2009

there are actually a ton of healthy options if you know what to ask for.....   no cheese, sour cream or guacamole....  go soft shell as opposed to hard shell (which are fried) if you go the taco or fajita route....  if you do the salad, ask for no tortilla bowl (you'll just be tempted to eat the whole thing if its there!).. leave out the croutons ask for dressing on the side... ask that they grill the shrimp or chicken without butter or too much oil..... luckily even though it sounds like you are leaving a lot out, mexican food is really tasty with the salsas, spices and herbs so it'll be delish and guilt free!

That is the problem eating out anywhere - not knowing exactly what is going into your meal!  But now a days, places are usually very accomodating (more so at a nice cafe like you said than a chain like denny's) so if you request to not use grease in any of the cooking (opt for a cooking spray instead, everywhere has them) and to substitute egg whites or turkey bacon instead of the full cal options, you'll save some more that way and be able to enjoy the extra piece of toast guilt free!

I would say it would defintely be higher than 600.... if you look up Denny's (which is typical diner type food) they list their calories - bacon is actually closer to 200 calories for four slices.

The additional calories at a diner come from the fact (as well as at a deli which my family owns and I've worked at in high school) is the eggs and hash browns are traditionally cooked in the bacon grease not butter just because it is less expensive and more readily accessible, being recycled from the bacon cooked.  Cooked at home yourself the way chrissy described it would be in that calorie range... but for Denny's Two Egg Breakfast (which is just two eggs, hash browns and bread of choice) it is around 800 calories.. and that's before you add any meat

The low fat Vanilla Wafers are good...I like to dip them in non fat vanilla yogurt for a treat.  11 cookies have 110 calories & 2grms of fat.

Hate to correct even though its a small correction - a serving size for the reduced fat Nilla Wafers is actually 8 cookies not 11 (11oz is the box size) https://www.wegmans.com/webapp/wcs/stores/ser vlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=100 52&productId=359010&catalogId=10002&a mp;krypto=QJrbAudPd0vzXUGByeatog%3D%3D&dd key=http:ProductDisplay

The recipe analyzer is a great tool but be careful! I just tried to use it the other day and I entered a salad I made with just a 9 oz bag of spinach, a can of red kidney beans, a can of cannelini beans and a can of corn and it was telling me the whole salad was 2,100 calories! For some reason, no matter how specific I edited the can of kidney beans (amount or description) they kept coming up as 1400 calories for 15oz.. I went back to the can that I bought (Goya Red Kidney Beans) and there is actually only 315 calories in the whole can.  So make sure you double check it - it isn't as accurate as it can be...  my whole salad to last a week when I manually tabulated everything was about 850 calories - BIG difference!

has anyone else eaten more calories than they thought trying to make good choices? Howd you bounce back? this is so disheartening!

To avoid the same thing happening another time, try working out what the calorie count of a meal will be before you make it rather than after the fact.   The Recipe Analyser is very good for this.   You can add up all the ingredients of your dish and see what the total is.... if it's too high you can trim them back before you start.

Vegetables are low in calories but, like everything else, it's not good to eat them in unlimited amounts.  A lb of broccoli is 150 cals.... admittedly it's tough to eat a whole lb of broccol but I think you get the point.

So that's my tip.   Enter the calories for your meals in advance so you can make adjustments if necessary.  The next time you'll know that you can only get away with 2oz dry pasta, rather than 3oz... or whatever... and the process gets a lot easier.

gi-jane : where can one find the recipe analyser you are talking about?  that would make my life a lot easier (instead of going in and individually adding up each can of beans I had to my chili etc)!

thanks that was really heartening! I have no idea where to start, but one step at a time is apparently best. My main problem isnt what I eat but the volume of it. I need to get used to less food! Thats going to be hard since I dont feel like I overeat now. I really hope to find a lot of support here. Ive read through the forums and you guys all seem awesome! :)

Welcome also!  I felt the same when I started out but what really worked for me was taking small snacks (90 cal special k bars, clementines and other fruit, 100 calories of nuts, 45 calorie rice cakes) and eating one snack every 2 or 3 hours (obviously my bfast, lunch and dinner meals are more substantial)... but I felt like I was eating SO often that you don't even think you are decreasing or restricting yourself that much...  plus with all of the 100 calorie pack options, fruits, low fat yogurts and cheeses you have so many snack options and can snack away and still stay at your calorie requirements

I usually keep my eye on the local grocery store circulars and when Lean Cuisines or Smart Ones are on sale for cheap I stock up - same thing with the 100 Calorie Packs.  Both are extremely satisfying and real easy to just throw in a lunch bag with some carrots and fruit and yogurt and be set for the day!

check out http://www.zevia.com./

it obviously isn't found at a tremendous amount of places but you can purchase online too... tons of flavors (cola, orange, root beer, ginger ale etc) and no aspartame!

Also....  4C makes new powdered drink mixes called Totally Light 2 Go that are sweetened with Splenda not aspartame. And some of the newer prepared Crystal Light are sweetened with Splenda and not aspartame as well.
