I get about 40g of protein a day, lose weight and build/maintain muscle by consistently getting 2-3 days a week of resistance training in. I'm vegan as well. |

You are correct, but only if a person is not getting their energy needs met from carbs and fats which should be a person's main source of energy. |

I'm sorry darling, but I do not read Shape, Cosmo or any magazine of the sort. Proteins are comprised of an acid group, an amine group (N2) and a chain of amino acids. If a person takes in excess protein (beyond the prescribed limits), the amine group is excreted in your urine (really tough on the body), and the remainder of the "protein" is converted into glucose OR fat for storage if glucose stores are already full (which they usually are seeing as how much carbs people usually ingest). Protein needs to only comprise 10-30% of a person's daily calories, eating .8-1.2g of protein per kg of body weight falls within these boundaries. I am also not talking about how to be skinny fat, I am only concerned with educating people on how to live healthier lives through their diets. I suggested taking in more healthy fats because the acceptable macronutrient range for them is 20-35%, more than protein's range is. Based on a 2,000 calorie diet (just to give you an idea), if the OP is ingesting 160g of protein (160g x 4cal/g= 640cal), 640 calories is equal to 32% of your daily caloric needs coming from protein. Seeing that this was on the upper limits of its acceptable range, I merely suggested increasing calories from elsewhere to ensure maximum health benefits. |

you should be getting no more than 1.2g of protein a day per kg of body weight, so for 165lbs, you should be aiming for about 90g of protein (and 1.2g is for top notch athletes). Try to get more calories from healthy, saturated fats to balance your diet out. Having too much protein puts unnecessary strain on your body and can actually be stored as fat once it has been broken down and not all of it has been used. |

I agree with most of what you're saying (unlike these other crazy repliers :P). There are definitive body shapes out there and these different body shapes carry their weight differently. Therefore, a pear shaped girl is going to want to do more leg work then an apple shaped girl who would want to do more upper body work. In addition though, there are guidelines for eating healthy that I believe all people should follow and not that one type of eating applies to one type of person. |

sweetheart, unless you weigh upwards of 290lbs, this is MUCH too much protein to be ingesting, even taking into account your activity level. To find out how much you should have in a day, take your body weight in lbs, divide by 2.2 to get your weight in kgs and then times by .8-1.2 to get the grams of protein you should be getting each day. And 1.2 would be something for super athletes or those who work out twice a day+ |

Briefly, what are your stats and activity level? We're only supposed to ingest 0.8-1.0g of protein per kg of body weight each day. I agree with the pervious poster that spreading it our through the day would be much more beneficial to your body bc otherwise it'll pass most of it out. Want to make sure you dont get too much protein either :). |

CC definetly is a really useful tool and has helped me to lose a good 13lbs. Its just gotten to the point that I can feel incredibly guilty after eating any kind of carbs, no matter how small or good they may be. I can meet my calorie and nutrient goal and workout for 2+ hours a day and still not feel like I'm doing enough. |

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for your replies! Its really interesting to hear other people's viewpoints :). Could someone explain to me what apatheism is? I've never heard this term used before. Keep these replies rolling in and feel free to share what religion means to you in your daily life and if it doesn't play a part, please explain that as well :). |

Jenny: I'm not able to help you out very much, I eat my carbs from whole grains when they dont come from nuts and veggies/fruits etc :(. My reccomendation would be to try out different soup recipies, especially in a crockpot and then you'll be able to incorporate any vegetables you want along with your source of protein :). |

smallmac264: I beg to differ. Most vegetarin and vegan food is not highly processed, especially the extremly healthy and natural foods that come as they are. A whole-grain plant based diet is all a person needs in order to live the healthiest that they can off of any kind of food. And meat does not have only one ingredient, it has a slurry of chemicals that it has been washed, processed and soaked in. Veggie burgers can be made easily by solely using lentils and brown rice and can be eaten using the same toppings you would use on a regular burger. Being smart about what you eat is the most important thing you can do for yourself. A PROPER vegan/vegetarian diet is as nature has intended. |

Its given a "poor" grade since the majority of calories in peanut butter come from fat. We're supposed to average 20-35% of our daily calories from fat so if more than 35% come from fat (as in pb) its going to get a bad rap. Fortunatly though, so long as the other foods you eat during the remainder of the day are on target, there's nothing to worry about since it'll all balance out and pb has the good kind of fat in it :). I eat Jif Natural pb and it has the same calories as the other 2 kinds of jif, just less sodium and processed stuff. |

For future health benefits I would recommend dropping the dairy products for good (or at least cutting back on them some what) in order to prevent future bone degredation and possible osteoporosis. Contrary to popular belief, milk degrades bone more than building it up. Instead of soy milk alternatives try almond milk such as the unsweetend original version from Blue Diamond, better than regular milk anyway! And as for getting the necessary vitamins, its completly and easily do-able even without dairy products. Don't be frightened and shy away from a choice that could do great benefit to your body in the long run :). |

There are great benefits to eating a vegan diet, the protein that is found in animal products (meat AND dairy products) is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Again, watch Forks Over Knives, definetly a GREAT movie. Then there's also the benefits by not supporting the factory farming businesses and the systematic horrible treatment of animals. You may not think that eating cheese, milk and eggs aren't so bad, but with every cup of milk there's a little calf who was taken from his mother right after birth, forced to live in a small box unable to lie down and kept in the complete dark for a few months and then killed. Thats veal for ya. For this I recommend watching Earthlings, its on youtube, but be warned, its extremly graphic. Then there are the environmental benefits. One person choosing a vegan diet can do more for the environment then they could by buying a hybrid car. And finally, there is the issue of hunger in the world. We use so much grain to feed billions of cows a year but can only spare enough food for 5-6 billion people. Ceasing factory farming would end world hunger and the UN themselves stated that to sustain the world's population, we should all adopt a more vegetarian-like lifestyle. So take your pick. My boyfriend and I are vegan for health reasons, though thoughts of the other causes keep us from relapsing. Just make sure you're smart about getting all of your nutrients, you might want to take a vitamin supplement at first as you get the hang of things :). |

Sorry that I made no mention of the kind of financial situation that we are currently in, it wasn't relevant information to the question that I was asking. And, the time that we decided on that we might start trying for a child, I will be done with school when it is born. I did not provide more information bc it was NOT RELEVANT. You do not have enough information to pass judgement, neither should you. Please stick to the original question. |
