I thought it was okay to exercise as long as I don't get hit in the abdomen? I don't understand why I would need more protein than usual; shouldn't it be less because I'm not exercising? I guess I'll add greek yogurt to the list of things to eat and see if it hurts my throat. I found that I can eat lukewarm salty liquids (ie. soup) without aggregating my throat too much but it's really not that appetizing.

Anyways, thanks for the reply!

The first thing I think when I read "I'm a teenager" is that a little weight gain is normal and you shouldn't fight it.

May I be so intrepid as to ask for your stats?

Granted, you now have dementia and thus no more residents.

I wish for a sparkly winged unicorn that poops rainbows and pukes dreams.

@xunique, I was actually like that for a bit, not an ED but I was volunteering at a summer camp and took my bike as transit in addition to working out 1.5 hours a day. It was nice but totally not sustainable for the long term.

@Katilea, have you tried sage and rosemary tea? I'm not sure what does it in sage but it helps drain you of excess liquid...perhaps it acts as a diuretic? Anyways, as far as weight loss goes, maybe you could try something not scale related, like measurements or clothing fit. Also, people suffering from anorexia have "pushed past" starvation mode in a way, the body can only compensate for so long before it just gives and weight loss inevitably happens. Additionally, if you drop your calories low, your body may choose to metabolise muscle, lowering your daily required calories and thus allowing you to eat less until you build the muscle back up again.

Ahh, well over that hump and onto the next one in about 10 days.

@Kat, I'd really rather not go the diet patch route, one because I don't believe they provide anything other than the placebo effect and two because if they do work, I'd rather not become dependent on them. But if things get really bad (which you know they will b/c I'm entering university) I may consider it, though 8 quid seems pricey compared to mind over matter.

@jsh It's not so much I want to eat everything in sight so much as I just want to eat stuff, independent of whether or not I see it. Though I totally feel you as I think I'd eat even more if the food wasn't packed away. Yeah, let's see how other people deal with this.

Fitness Knee irritation walking downhill? Aug 05 2011

Not a strictly scientific answer but, going downhill means that there is a longer time between the time your foot is raised and when it is lowered as opposed to going uphill. This, combined with the fact that you're going along with gravity can allow your leg to land with greater force onto the ground, which you will feel in your knee.

As to what you can do, cnichols' suggestion of shortening your stride is probably the best thing. I find that walking downwards sort of like you're squating helps too (knees a little bent but never infront of your toes). Your quad may burn if it's a really long hike down but the stress on the knee is relieved.

I've seen canned green in walmart here but they're the gross, boiled for 4 hours kind with lots of added salt. I've never seen any frozen ones, and the fresh ones I have to go all the way to Chinatown to buy, but I'll be on the look out for them.

I've actually found that even whole grains are digest rather quickly and leave me feeling hungry sooner than if I ate fruit. I've had barley and calorie per calorie it's just not as filling as a mango, though probably a lot easier to find/cheaper in the east.

(As a side note, I usually do the sunflower seed thing when I'm on vacation as insurance against traveller's constipation. It's really not that bad if you chew.)

I don't think I've seen that particular Bob's product, the "organic and healthy" food section of the grocery I go to is only about an aisle long. I was wondering if you've seen chain grocers that consistently have wheat bran in their bulk section?

I thought psyllium was a soluble fibre because it's the stuff in medimucil (however  you spell it) and benefibre...

Weight Loss TruVia CARBS!? Aug 03 2011

Those carbs are fibre if I'm reading the back correctly. I think that means that erythritol is a sweet fibre that isn't digested, thus provides no food energy/calories.

Weight Loss Recovering from food poisoning... Jul 12 2011

Got it recently, though it was atleast half my fault.

I was on a liquid only diet for like 3 days because everything was getting flushed out and I recommend unsweetened almond milk if you're still in that stage. It's a bit more interesting than water and has some nutrients in it, especially sodium/potassium and calcium.

If you're to the point where you can stomach solid food, I remember the doc told me to go low protein as it'll upset your stomach less. Though, I didn't really listen and ended up downing a lot of unsweetened soymilk and tofu. I like what other people are saying, eat something starchy and let it absorb water so that you won't just be flushing yourself out.

Calories aren't a major concern right now, just focus on getting better. You can start on your regime faster if you get better quicker.

I made some yesterday, it's a bit too sweet though, less sugar next time.

(makes two 10" shells)

2 cups Whole wheat flour (note: I live in Canada, so the gluten content of my flour is higher than in the US, you may need to supplement this with VWG/bread flour)

4/5 cup warm water (I don't really measure, whatever makes the dough feel right)

1/2 tsp lemon juice

1 tsp baking powder

2 tsp dry active yeast (brand I use is Red Star, the giant Costco packages)

2Tbsp+2tsp white sugar

1)In a small dish/ramekin, proof the yeast with two teaspoons of warm water and two teaspoons of sugar.

2) In a large bowl, mix remaining sugar, flour and baking powder.

3) When the yeast slurry looks like a slurry (about after 10 minutes), dump it into the flour mix and rince the ramekin with the warm water, dumping all of it into the flour mix. You may need more water but remember that the dough will get a little wetter as the yeast and baking powder start working.

4) Mix dough until doughy, then knead for 15 minutes (you may need additional flour or a bit of oil on your hands)

5) Let rise in the fridge for 2 hours, covered loosely with plastic wrap coated in oil.

6) Degas dough and split half off for later (lasts about a week in the freezer), let the remainder rise for another hour before using.

I'd really think that you're getting addicted to the overly sweet flavour. How many packets/grams are you going through in a day?

If you really think you've been using too much of the stuff, cut back slowly. Use less of it on the stuff you're eating and get used to your food having flavours other than chemically super-sweet.

As for health risks, from what I remember, you're not supposed to eat more than 1.1mg per kg body weight a day, can't remember what the consequence was though, probably not nice.

Weight Loss Studying on a Diet? Jun 16 2011

Tried it during IB exams, failed and ended up gaining a lot (which is why I'm back). The only advice I can offer is not to drink lots of water or caffeinated drinks before your exam as you will want to go to the washroom and I don't think you're allowed.

If you're on a diet, ease up a little, it'll cause you less stress while studying (I know that doesn't sound like great advice coming after what I've told you about myself).

Do your best on the MCAT! :)

Thanks for the advice, I figured that I can still do pushups (just not the knuckle ones), most core exercises and unweighted leg exercises, just needs a lot more to be effective. I guess my biceps/upper back will have to chill until the peeling starts.

@loukasl, I don't belong to a gym, so I guess I'm out of luck for that. Can't imagine how strapping something to my forearm would work though. I'm not great at running (around 6 minutes/km) but I'll see if there's anywhere that's appropriate to try.

@cnichols, prom in 2 weeks, I'd rather not chill for a day when I could be avoiding being the fat girl in a long dress. Thank you for your concern though. I've never tried spinning, it's like being in a bike right? I'll see if I can join a drop-in somewhere.

Weight Loss i have a problem! Jun 14 2011

First reason out if the feeling is a craving or hunger. Craving indicates that there is something missing from you other than the food you want, it's usually a specific food or food group. Hunger means that you want to ingest food and wouldn't really mind what kind. Note that increased amounts of lower intensity exercise may make you hungrier.

Are you craving a specific type or taste of food (e.g. cookies, cakes, pies or burgers, fries, chips or fish, eggs, cheese?)? This may indicate a deficiency in some macro/micronutrient in your diet. If so, try to figure out which one and ingest some nutritious food that contains the nutrient.

This may sound a little personal but it is your TOM? My sister has the randomest cravings then too. There's not much to do about it other than distracting yourself. Watch some food documentaries on youtube, sip some lemon water and basically keep doing what you've been doing.

If you haven't been eating enough overall, cave with a mini-sized portion of what you want and savour it (e.g. if you want a brownie cut a 1 cm square of it). Also, if you've started to exercise more, you should adjust your burn level and increase consumption accordingly.

Your idea sounds pretty good, you could also powder it with icing sugar and slice it in half, stuffing the middle with various juicy fruits (kiwi and mango are delicious).

If you want actual frosting (creamy-ish icing): Take some NSA vanilla pudding (or any flavour you prefer), make it with skim milk. Then prepare meringue and fold it into the pudding. Carefully top the cake with it.

Fav accent: Italian, then Russian/other eastern european countries (I actually feel bad typing that as I can't tell the difference for the most part)

I retain my english-speaking accent when speaking in other languages if that counts. I can also do Harry Potter, and a weird chinese accent that comes out when I think I'm doing a french accent.

I have a pacific NW accent, which is adaptable to most english accents (Exception: Boston) by staying in the desired location for a sufficient amount of time.

Watch "Britain's Really Disgusting Foods" on youtube, chew some gum and play video games with cartoon violence, they're very distracting.
