The Lounge Hyperhidrosis anyone? May 21 2010

Ive got it. Armpits. Sorry to tell you that in my case, losing weight has not really had any effect. Drysol works a little bit but makes my skin hurt and stains my clothes.

I had botox shots last summer - yep, in the armpits. It was fabulous. I didn't sweat for about 5 months. No huge sweat circles, no having to avoid delicate fabrics, no having to cover up with sweaters in the middle of the summer. Highly recommend it for other armpit people :)

To OP: typically, hyperhidrosis happens in one specific body location like hands, armpits, etc. I dont think general all-over sweating is hyperhidrosis. Hope this helps.

Im from the state of Oregon, and we've had this since about 1994..or maybe '96..anyhoo, there are a number of very strict ethical limitations on who qualifies. The person must:

  • Be terminal (as verified by multiple docs).
  • Be in chronic pain.
  • Be of sound mind (as verified by even more docs).
  • Be required to wait a long time for their case to be approved (no spontaneous acts).

With safeguards like these, no one can claim that there is a slippery slope.

I hated needles -- HATED them -- until I became a nurse. After giving enough shots to other people, needles have become no big deal. Now I give blood every chance I get. It reminds me of how far Ive come on my needle issue.

Small steps toward exposure to whatever you're afraid of is the best way IMO.

You're not alone, Tes. Im mad as hell too!

Obama is wrecking everything. Give the presidency back to Bush, he knows how to build a strong economy AND he wasn't about to let the poor people weasel their way into our healthcare system.

I don't want to live in an America where insurance companies can't choose to keep cancer-riddled children from receiving healthcare. Umm hello its called FREEDOM!

P.S. We need to shut down the FDA for impinging on our freedom to eat e.coli infested beef. They basically just take our tax dollars and tell us what we can or can't eat. I dont need the government to micromanage MY LIFE!

Someone already brought up Vitamin D, but I wanted to add that studies have shown that Vitamin D is a proven mood lifter. It also helps your bones absorb calcium, so it helps prevent osteoporosis (in fact, calcium supplements are practically useless if you dont get Vitamin D along with it).

So if you tan, Vitamin D -- and not just the cosmetic effects -- might explain why you are happier. And if you dont tan, a big bottle of supplements will cost you like 5 bucks.

God is perfect.  Humans aren't.  Some of His laws are or were created in response to a particular failing of the Israelites at a particular point in their history.  For instance, polygamy was allowed in the OT, but in the NT we're told that a leader in the church should have only one wife.  In the OT divorce was allowed, in the NT Jesus told his followers that that was because their hearts were hard at that time and that we should no longer get divorced.

A couple interesting points, in the New Testament it says that only Jews have to follow all the laws.  Gentiles who became/become Christians only have a few laws that they must follow.  I can't remember them all and don't feel like looking them up but it was something like, keep the Sabbath holy, don't eat food from animals sacrificed to other gods, and don't be sexually immoral.  The Jews are God's chosen people and are therefore held to a higher standard.

Also, with Jesus' death and resurrection, a new relationship between God and man was made possible.  There are sins that are definitely written in stone, so to speak, but there are many areas of life that are not.  In those areas, such as the role of women in society, it is between a person and God to decide what is sinful and what isn't.  For one woman, being the dominant person in her marriage or being a working mom or whatever might be a sin.  For another woman it's not.

The Bible spans millennia.  The relationship between God and mankind evolved tremendously during that time.  To take a portion of the Bible and base your entire judgement of Christianity or God on your feelings about that portion doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Ha! The old god changed his mind about incest/divorce/slavery/sexism/everything argument! These rules are for these people at these times, but those rules are for those people at those times. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be until god changes his mind.

Umm, sidenote - god told me yesterday that he has changed his mind about gay people. Now they are his favorite people! Innocent He wants me to tell everyone that we couldnt handle this news before because "our hearts were hard" before today...just like the NT followers learning about divorce!

If a man had sex with (consensual or not) an unmarried woman, he rendered her un-marriageable.  He was then forced to support her for the rest of her life, else the society of the time (then non-Christian and non-Jew) would have banished her (at best) or killed her (more likely).  The rule was there to ensure a wrong was righted.  Was this the BEST solution?  Well, today we might not think so, (understatement!) but two thousand years ago it was a shockingly merciful solution.

Yes, it is an outdated belief that women who have had sex are unmarriageable. Yet there it is in the bible, supposedly a manual for how to live life. People say that the bible is modern and relevent, yet it is filled with outdated and sexist rules. If you agree with me on this point (and it sounds like you do) then you agree that it is anti-feminist.

People did (and do) many despicable acts.  azirra, you are ascribing to me, a law abiding military veteran who loves his wife and four daughters, many crimes.  As an agnostic, might I ascribe to YOU the sins of those who carry your banner?  Shall I throw some ignorant and unlearned examples in your face and call your beliefs illegitimate?

One of the perks of being an atheist is that I dont carry a banner! Smile I get to be myself and I get to be held responsible for my own ideas because my body and mind arent just a robotic vessel for someone else's will.

Further, are you saying that the American founding fathers, the ones who ensured your rights in this country, also condoned rape, genocide, slavery, racism, homophobia, and infanticide?  These same men and women, flawed as they were, set up likely the only governing system in the world where someone with your beliefs could openly attack the majority of people's beliefs without fear.

They were mostly Deists, although a lot of Thomas Jefferson quotes suggest to me that he was agnostic. And yes, they did condone some of those things, certainly racism and sexism! The FFs had slaves, remember? And they totally had the chance to give women the right to vote but they decided against it.

Funny how those who expect mainstream folks to tolerate their extreme beliefs have NO tolerance for those who think differently from them.  I respect (and nearly died for) your right to think differently.  How about a little respect for what I (and the majority of people in the world) believe in?

My beliefs aren't extreme...you dont believe in Buddha, Mohammad, or Zeus. You are an atheist in regards to most religions too. I simply believe in one god less than you do. In fact, if you want to go the route of choosing a religion by majority rule, let me remind you that the majority of people in the world do not believe in salvation through Jesus. There are 8 billion people and 2 billion Christians. Thats 25%.

P.S. I was an Army nurse for six years, and my husband is a disabled veteran who spent 6 months in Iraq. Now that we are through with the military credential check, I hope I have proven myself "qualified" to talk about gender inequalities in the bible.

Someone asked if Feminism (aka gender equality) is compatible with Christianity. I listed some evidence as to why they are not compatible.

If you want to prove me wrong, find some bible passages which suggest that God supports gender equality. Im guessing that no one will be able to do this.

Like Trustwomen implied above, the only way you can be a feminist and a Christian is by turning a blind eye to the many, many, many bible passages which explicitly condone rape, treat women like possessions on the same level as livestock, and equate womanhood with intrinsic sinfulness and uncleanness.

Some lovely examples:

  1. If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father.  Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her. (Deut 22:28-29) Yep, the young woman is forced to marry her rapist.
  2. All women must suffer labor pains because Eve ate the apple (Adam ate it too but whatever, he's a guy)
  3. Lot offers his daughters to get gang raped by a crowd. Later, Lot impregnates one of his daughters.
  4. God ordains men forcefully taking several wives.
  5. Leviticus says that women need to be purified after giving birth because the women are "unclean." P.S. Women who gave birth to a female baby have to purify for twice as long as those who gave birth to a male. Yep. It seriously says that.
  6. Women who are menstruating are to be hidden away in their houses and cant touch anything.
  7. Anyone who even LOOKS at a menstruating woman (aka 1/4th of women at any given time) are wrong.
  8. If a man has sex with a slave woman or an engaged woman, he must whip her. No punishment for the man.
  9. Unchaste daughters of priests must be burned to death. No mention of unchaste sons, so no punishment for them.
  10. Leviticus 27:3-7 God places dollar values on humans. Women worth less than men.
  11. Numbers 31:14-18 Moses tells his soldiers to kill all the men, elderly peeps, and children, but keep all the young virgin girls for raping.
  12. Too many more for me to list.

If you choose to call yourself a Christian, you should know that you are worshiping a god who condones rape, murder, genocide, slavery, racism, homophobia and infanticide. And in doing so, some would say that you are indirectly supporting these things yourself.

The Navy and Air Force are the "brains." The Army and Marines are the "brawn." My insider recommendation to anyone considering the military would be to join the Air Force or Navy. They tend to have waaaay better facilities, treat new recruits with a little more respect and dignity, plus you will probably be slightly safer from injury and death if you deploy to a war zone, as the Navy and Air Force are more support services rather than frontline fighters. Also, Id recommend that you pick an MOS (job) that offers a long training period, so you will be able to use that free military training to get a job when you get out. For example, I became an Army nurse, so now that Im out, I can be a nurse...whereas no one in the private sector really needs infantry dudes, you know?

Requirements to join: ok physical shape, high school diploma or GED, not much else. As long as you're under 35 and have no huge permanent injury, they'll take you.

As for "how was it"...the military is a really mixed bag. Made lifelong friends, got screamed at a lot...it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

In a perfect world, this would not even be an issue.  However, this is not a perfect world, and unlike CC, the military is not full of liberals.  Quite the opposite.  The military needs to find a path that does not, as an earlier poster pointed out, result in gay soldiers being beaten to death.  "Don't ask, don't tell" is a compromise.  It may be the best we can do for now.

I was in the Army Reserve for 6 years, 3 of which were on active duty. And yes, certain parts of the Army - like the medical sections and the language sections (I was a nurse) - most certainly are full of liberals and most certainly are full of gay people.

I remember riding in a van with my company commander (who everyone knew was a lesbian), the first sergeant, and a bunch of high ranking platoon leaders right before the 2004 election. A political conversation commenced. It was a consensus, they were all voting for Kerry because they all agreed that Bush was abusing the military.

Ive showered with lesbians. They didnt hit on me. My morale was fine.

Im sure there is a different vibe towards gay people in some all-male, active duty infantry units, but in my experience, the unofficial motto of the medical & language sections is "dont ask, don't care."

I think Obama ought to end DADT. It would be nice for gays to have legal protection in case they get a weirdo commander who actually wants to kick em out. But...meh...even if Obama doesn't, societal views are changing, and acceptance of homosexuality has seeped into the military, whether the older generation of Pentagon policy makers like it or not.

Chronological Snobbery

I came across this today and found it amusing. It made me think back to this comment you made.

"Chronological snobbery"?!?

Jesus H. Christ.

OF COURSE humanity gets smarter and better informed over time. OF COURSE we make progress, especially in terms of how to use the scientific method to prove what is or isnt true. Its not snobbery. Its building on our prior investigations to refine our theories of how or why things work.

You are training to become a doctor. I come to you with a brain tumor. Are you going to give me a course of leeches, like they would have prescribed 2,500 years ago? No, because we've developed better treatments.

Are you practicing "Chronological snobbery" when you skip the leeches and give me the latest treatment? Nope, youre following the facts. So is Carmenxox. The people who lived 2,000+ years ago, including the ones who wrote the bible, didnt have the tools that we have today. It isnt an insult against them -- they did the best they could without accurate maps, microscopes, telescopes, basic knowledge of DNA and the existence of germs, etc. And for that I give them props. But it isnt chronological snobbery to point out the obvious: they got a lot of things wrong. No offense to Jesus, but a modern 3rd grader knows more about science than Jesus did.
