Weight Loss Any way to lose weight w/o exercise? Aug 31 2008

Be diligent in counting calories - ensure you run a deficit every day and you will lose weight! If you wish to lose the weight faster rather than slower, then run a high deficit (but not higher than 1000/day)

Good luck!

Weight Loss No food after 6pm question??? Aug 31 2008

Not eating after 6pm is a good idea for anyone that is trying to lose weight, although due to many peoples lifestyles this will not work. If you do need to eat after 6pm, ensure that is low carb and high protein.

The reason for this is that your body's Metabolism slows down when it's sleeping, so it digests things slower. Carbs digest slowly even without a slowed Metabolism, so WITH the slow Metabolism, they end up not getting completely digested and end up stored as extra fat.

People who eat after 6pm tend to make bad choices as well - chips, soda, chocolate while they watch tv......my wife stopped eating food after 6pm in January of this year (along with other lifestyle changes) and managed to lose 78 lbs - living proof it assists you in weigh loss!

Read the following article and take the test. My wife changed all of her eating habits after taking the test and the difference in her weight loss was astounding. She was doing well prior to this, but almost as soon as she changed things up the pounds really started to fall off!!

Original Post by hgielrehtaeh:

It is detrimental to your health. Your risks are cancer, hardened blood vessels, and addiction. You should stop.

That said, I occassionally smoke half a cigar (maybe twice a year). It's usually when I'm out drinking and I feel like crap the next day. Even with not inhaling.

hgielrehtaeh - perhaps you should re-read you posts before you hit the "post reply" button.

No. It would be no worse than spending a day in a big city with poor air quality. Like everything in life, enjoy things in moderation.

Buy a box of Special K with the free pedometer - I have a couple of them and the Special K one beats many of the $5 to $10 ones because you can enter in your weight and/or stride for more accuacy......+ you can get the readout to tell you calories burned, distance or steps......love it!
Weight Loss how to increase protein, when vegitarian? Feb 08 2008

I would recommend a protein shake over a protein bar personally. I have been drinking the Weider Protein Powder which is a whey protein that comes in a vanilla flavor (among others). I have one in the morning right after my workout and one in the evening - it's a great way to boost your protein levels. I agree fully with the other comments saying that cottage cheese and beans are also very good sources of protein as well.

Note! When shopping for a protein powder read the ingredients carefully as some companies use a lot of fillers that you may not want to ingest......

"Thou shall not judge!"

Educate and encourage instead.

Be true to yourself and your goals and NEVER worry about what other people think, or what YOU think other people might think.

Good luck and keep pushing yourself!

Weight Loss What counts as water? Feb 04 2008

I would try to have water as there is no "real" substitute for it. If you are bored by drinking it, then buy some of those single flavoring packets by Nestea or Crystal Light - my wife and I buy them and have found it much easier to drink the 2 to 3 litres of water a day that our bodies need.
Foods ideas??? Jan 30 2008

Grilled vegetables are a favorite for me - grilled red and green peppers, mushrooms, red onion etc. or if you prefer, you can grill them on skewers (sans meat) and brush them with just a touch of your favorite lite dressing or seasoning.

Hope you have a nice dinner!

You may wish to introduce some "Core Body" work to assist with your goal of "6-Pack Abs". Along with that, using the ball helps work those core muscles lots too. Reverse crunches (or leg lifts) work the abdominal region well too.

Also, I have to agree fully with james87 - ensure that your form is good and you will find that doing a few sets of 10 to 20 reps of well done crunches will give you a far better workout (as well as isolating the abs) than just doing 150 sit-ups.

Good luck with your goal!

Weight Loss Does anyone fluctuate 5 pounds during the day? Jan 30 2008

EVERYBODY fluctuates up to 5 or 6 pounds a day. It is a normal thing. Pick a time of day to weigh yourself (I weigh myself first thing in the AM after going to the bathroom) and ONLY weigh yourself at that time, so that there is consistency.

You're normal, don't worry about it.

Foods prawn vs. shrimp Jan 29 2008

From Wikipedia:

While in biological terms prawns are of a distinct biological suborder of Decapoda, in commercial farming and fishery the terms shrimp and prawn are often used interchangeably. In European countries, particularly the United Kingdom, the word “prawns” is more commonly on menus than the term “shrimp”, which is used more often in North America. The term “prawn” is also loosely used to describe any large shrimp, especially those that come 15 (or fewer) to the pound (also called “jumbo shrimp”). Australia and other Commonwealth countries follow this European/British use to an even greater extent, using the word “prawn” almost exclusively. Paul Hogan’s use of the phrase “I'll slip an extra shrimp on the barbie for you” in a television advertisement was intended to make what he was saying easier for his American audience to understand, and was thus a deliberate distortion of what an Australian would typically say.

Believe it or not, there is actually a difference between prawns and shrimps. The difference lies in their gill structure. Prawns have a branching gill structure, whilst the gill structure of shrimps is lamellar. There is also a difference in the way that the two brood their eggs. Prawns legs are longer than shrimps and the shrimp's front pair of pincers is larger, whilst the prawns second pair of pincers is bigger. Prawns are similar to lobster, as they have two pairs of small pincers but due to the fact that they are similar in size to shrimps, they are sometimes confused with them.
Weight Loss Not to proud of myself. Jan 29 2008

Don't be so hard on yourself. I find myself struggling to fill my calories at least one day a week. I usually try to top up the remaining few hundred calories by eating high calorie, healthy snacks like nuts - it's amazing, but a handful of nuts can amount to 300-400 calories!! It doesn't fill you up, is healthy and ensures you won't have a huge defecit that day.

Don't worry about your body going into starvation mode as it usually takes a healthy person two or more weeks of low food intake to kick into starvation mode.

Good luck!

Weight Loss biggest meal Jan 29 2008

Health Notes #9 B r e a k f a s t   The Largest Meal ? W H Y ?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is like taking an auto trip. If your gas tank is empty, when do you fill it up? Before you start the journey or when you arrive? Obviously, you need to be full of high octane fuel before beginning your trip, otherwise you are headed for trouble. Likewise, think of your day as a journey; and think of your breakfast as providing energy to start that journey. You need more food energy at the beginning than at the end of the day.

Breakfast-skipping combined with eating heavy evening meals is unwise because it involves the area of energy balance. By this we mean that you need the most energy at the beginning of the day and the least energy at the end when you are winding down and doing less strenuous activity.

Breakfast should contain about one-third to one-half of the daily dietary needs. Omitting breakfast can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. One of the reasons for this is because we begin to get hungry in the middle of the morning and start snacking on foods that are not as nutritional. Rarely do we see people snacking on carrots sticks and apples. Right?

Studies on children's learning ability show that if a good breakfast were eaten, work rate and output were improved even later in the morning. School performance showed higher creativity, motivation, and fluency in visual and memory tests.

Studies have also shown that men and women who regularly ate breakfast reported better-than-average health, compared with those who skipped breakfast.

What do we eat for a good breakfast to get us through the morning? It should typically be rich in carbohydrates since this is the premium fuel for the brain and the body. This means that one should eat liberally of whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables.

It is important that the starchy foods be whole grain, such as brown rice, whole wheat breads and waffles, bagels, muffins and pasta. They are a wonderful source of vitamins and minerals, protein and fiber. Dietary fiber plays an important role in helping to lower blood cholesterol levels, promote regularity, and help protect against colon cancer.

Gradually cutting down on the evening meal and adding nutritious foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals and low in fat and sugars to your breakfast will have many bonuses. More energy, clearer mind, and more time in the evening when you are wearing out and would like to just relax are but three of them.

Lighter evening meals might include: soups and toast or crackers or popcorn and fresh fruit. If the stomach is empty at bedtime then you will rest better and be hungrier at the breakfast table.
