| Fitness | What's the right amount of cardio to tone up my abs? | Jul 31 2009 21:37 (UTC) |

Cardio doesn't help tone abs. What exactly do you mean by "tone" anyway? If you are looking for more definition, allover fat loss is what you need. Cardio can help with that although lifting heavy weights is better. Cardio will help you burn more calories when you do it which can make it easier to have a calorie deficit which is what helps with weight loss. It doesn't have a lasting effect though, and you can lose lean body mass which is probably not what you want. Weight lifting (not talking 2lb-ers here) will help strengthen your muscles and increase your base metabolism since an equal weight of muscle burns a lot more calories just by existing than an equal amount of fat. Personally I have found GREAT success (over 50lbs lost so far) with eating a clean diet with a small deficit and my only exercise is weight lifting. |

I'm stunned at the idea that rape could ever be something about "alpha male" or "survival of the fittest." Even in animal "cultures", they don't rape the female animals to prove their dominance... they fight over the females. Big difference. lorik I truly hope you are just playing devil's advocate because as I read through this thread it started to seem more and more like justification. |

Don't put it into stocks. Yes they will give you the biggest return but also the biggest risk of loss. For long-term investments stick to high interest savings or CDs. This is coming from someone who works in finance and daytrades on the side, fwiw... you don't need the risk of stocks. If one of my members had your same situation, I would have the place the funds into a CD. |

Yeah no kidding, what a waste! Eggs are a fabulous balance of healthy fats and protein. With some whole wheat toast (and a smidge of butter) they are, in my humble opinion, the perfect breakfast. One that I ate this morning, actually. Helps to fuel my workout so I have more energy to work out harder. Keeps me fuller in the morning, also, I don't have to fight cravings. |

All of it except the punishment part. Physically it makes me look better. It makes me less stressed and I get a high after lifting. More energy in the day. Makes me healthier. I love having visible muscle. It makes me stronger which makes me more confident and also practically speaking is a lot better. I guess it just makes life easier for me. |

I agree with the "butter is good" idea. I don't ever buy margarine or shortening... we only use butter in our house. In moderation, it adds lots of great flavor, satiety, and I know it isn't full of artificial ingredients like margarine. I don't like "fake" foods so I generally just stick with the real thing and use in moderation. My breakfast, for instance, on my workout days is 2 pieces of wheat toast with butter and 2 eggs. Probably around 475-500 calories, sure, but it gives me lots of energy to do a good workout. I find I do much better with most of my daily calories earlier in the day. Especially protein. |

Benny I'm being honest here... you keep posting repeatedly about your calorie intake. I don't think I've ever seen a young man your age THIS worried about his calorie intake. That's why I say you need to relax. You might think you are relaxed but it sure doesn't come across that way when you are worried about what to do with a 200 calorie difference. It seems like every time I log on to this site there's a different thread by you asking the same questions about your calories. Of course to answer the original question I'll stay that I personally just strive for a range of calories and as long as my average at the end of the week is not more than 500 calories or so less than my average daily burn (as calculated by my GoWear Fit monitor) then I figure it's OK. Our bodies don't really go by the 24 hour clock that we do. And I will also say that an intake of 2600-3000 calories is definitely an improvement from the 2000 or less you were initially trying for. But again, I'm going to tell you what you have been told zillions of times. Limiting your calories and worrying about the calorie intake is not really that healthy of a thing at your age. I understand you don't want to be fat, and I would encourage you to lift weights to prevent that, but you need to realize that you might end up ruining your metabolic future if you mess with it too much. You could end up short and with a metabolism that has become accustomed to a limited calorie intake, which is not much fun because if you ever decide to splurge and have a nice 4 course meal at a restaurant or anything, you are too worried about gaining weight than you are enjoying yourself. I know I've written a lot but seriously, I see SO MANY people posting on here with their limited calorie intakes because they have RUINED their metabolisms. People eat 1200 calories a day... that's insane! I'm overweight, yes, and have been losing on 2000-2500 calories a day at age 29. I can eat this much and at this point I don't even count calories anymore... and it's only because I didn't kill my metabolism earlier on in my life. Life is too short to sit there and count calories and weigh and measure portions for the rest of your life. So in short, eat lots (especially protein) and lift weights. Don't worry about getting too buff. Just... stop worrying about your calorie intake. Just keep it up with eating the healthy food, don't limit yourself in terms of AMOUNTS of the healthy food. If you keep eating as healthy as you are and don't worry about limiting your intake, you will be health-wise leaps and bounds above your peers in terms of body health and also creating good eating habits for life. There will come a time when the insatiable metabolisms slow down when you aren't growing anymore and those of your peers who are still eating everything in sight including junk food, etc. are going to pack on the pounds. Keep up your healthy eating and don't ruin your metabolism by limiting it and you will most likely NOT find yourself in that situation. Sorry about the book ;) |

I wonder if something like a GoWear Fit would be helpful in this case? I don;t know if they are accurate for teenagers but having an accurate calorie burn has helped me a lot, and I think benny might benefit from having a more clear picture of his calorie burn. |

| Weight Loss | How to Afford Healty Food on a Salary of Less than 30,000 a year!! | Jul 09 2009 02:48 (UTC) |

I agree with cherry... a list of what is needed will really help. Our problem is that food was going bad and not getting used because I bought what looked good and what was on sale. I'm supporting a family of 4 (that's including 2 kids in diapers and one on formula) and putting my husband through school on right around $30k/year. Now when the ad comes out for the week, I look it over and compare it with my list of cheap healthy meals and go with it that way. I buy only whatever fruit is inexpensive and on sale. The only veggies I will buy at costco is their 10 lb bag of carrots, that lasts me about 2 weeks. Otherwise stuff goes bad, so I buy it at the regular store and only enough that will last me for the week. I make a plan for what meals will be on which days and I cook enough oftentimes for two meals which helps a lot. I don't always get the cheapest price per unit but I end up spending a lot less because food hasn't been going bad. Pre-planning the week's worth of meals has been so great because it cuts out buying the things I don't need. Now I know I buy 3 different kinds of fresh veggies, 3 different kinds of fresh fruit, whatever is needed for dinners, and then any of the basics like bread, cheese, etc. That gets me pretty much anything I need and has cut our grocery bill quite a bit. We're getting fresh fruits and veggies and a minimal amount of processed food. I realize your prices on fresh fruits & veggies are a lot more expensive than what I can get here so get what you can. If this means eating a lot of frozen veggies, so be it. Canned? So be it. Do what you can. Cooking from scratch is important also and forget the idea of fancy packaged stuff like protein water and activa yogurts. That's all a marketing ploy. Think - eat the way God intended. And my thing is, cheap proteins. I'm also allergic to soy so that limits me. I buy frozen chicken breast, cottage cheese (for the hubby), eggs, I make hummus from garbanzo beans, and we eat a lot of pinto beans in things like chili or burritos. We do buy ground beef when it's on sale for under $2/lb and I make burgers or single-serve meatloaf or something. Canned fish is awesome. Keeping in mind I'm a working mother so my time is so limited. Next year when I'll be able to stay-home I can go back to doing things that save even more money like baking our bread, cooking more from scratch, etc. But for now, we do what we can. |

The really funny part about this whole coversation is that
1. the OP is a he, not a she, and 2. the OP didn't try to eat just 300 calories. Was there even a mention of calories in the first post? I think the only mention of calories was the 400 calorie smoothie he had for lunch. Combine that with the "binge" and the yogurt and banana for breakfast you probably have a low amount of calories (compared to the 2000 he SHOULD be eating) but not even close to 300. |

Personally I don't think you are that far off-base. I agree - while he might have been flirty with other girls in the same TIME PERIOD, actually literally hitting on three other women at the same time he was trying to smooth things over with you doesn't really seem like something a committed guy would do. Then again, I also don't really believe in "harmless" flirtation either. Lucky for me, neither does my hubby so we do well together. Yes, you were broken up which means he could flirt with as many girls as he wanted but IMO if he was trying to get back together with you and is a man with any kind of integrity, he wouldn't have been trying to get with other women at the same time. |

I'm not going to hammer on the 1200 calories other than to say that I am also overweight and if I go below 2000 calories, I stop losing weight. If I keep it up around 2500, then I lose, and I lose fast.. I also lift weights 3x/week. So while your doctor may have OK'd the 1200 calories, it might be that your body doesn't like going that low. Lots of people find that too much of a deficit stalls weight loss... and there's a very good chance that your body burns over 3000 calories a day, depending on your lifestyle. That's a pretty big deficit. Personally I've found through trial and error that my body doesn't like more than a 750 calorie deficit. I'm currently at 212 down from 256, as a reference point. |

Depends on what the workouts are. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you probably need more than 12 minutes a day of exercise to see muscle definition. If you want muscle definition, lift heavy weights, period. |

First impression is that it doesn't seem like you are eating enough. Second impression has me asking where the protein is? I'm 5'5, 212 lbs and my maintenance is approximately around 2500 calories for a non workout day... and I have a sedentary desk job. Your calories just seem really low. Personally I can't lose weight unless I eat enough... sometimes the calories creep down and I start to plateau... I bump them back up and the weight starts coming off. Also agreed on the processed food - they are a lot easier but not that good for you, and the high sodium amounts will make you retain water. |

The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
