Weight Loss Too skinny? Jun 26 2008

virtoriangirl: "You bones become more dense as you become an adult, and reach maximum density at about age 30. So the weight you were in high school is not comparable to what you are now. Plus the muscle growth others have mentioned."

This has nothing to do with the bones. And bone density makes no much difference in weight. Try taking a chicken's skeleton and dry it - it's mineral mass weight is really not significant comparing to the total body weight - might be half a pound difference between now and then.

You're getting old, things are not the same as they were before.

As you're growing, your skin is getting old and fat % usually grows too. And "looking great" is only relevant to the average person, and the average person your age is probably fatter than you are.

Don't worry though, if you don't have any health problems related to your weight - whoever is telling you that you're too skinny is probably jealous :)
Weight Loss why do you want to lose weight? Jun 20 2008

Ofcourse there's enviromental affect on this.. If we had people starving on our streets and dying from it, unable to survive we'd preceive fat, and slow metabolism as good genetics - as those people would survive.

Nowdays, the ones that survive are the ones that don't have that much fat - getting dangerously fat is very common, and getting dangerously skinny.. not so much.

I had studied this as a part of my anatomy studies, if you think deep enough you'll get to it...

Say whatever you want, I guess I'm conflicting with some of your's beliefs ("beauty is in the eyes of the observer" etc..), it's all true.. but hey look at all of you - you're mostly here to "get healthy", "lose fat", and such and such.

There's a root to this big tree of doings, and that root is what you work for your whole life.. Think about what that root is - why are you living? why are you working hard? why do you fight each day?

quote:"Sorry, but I think this is a bunch of phooey. Concepts of beauty are culturally programmed, not genetically--if they were genetically programmed, we would find the SAME concept of beauty across time/cultures--which we don't.

As for me, I just really want to be able to keep playing soccer and as I age, the extra weight will keep me from being able to do so. I'd like to be faster, too, so I could be a better player. Nothing else has gotten me interested in losing the extra weight I've carried since my last pregnancy nearly 10 years ago."

-------
And we do find the same concept of beauty across time/cultures... We also find it in any animal... The more semetrical you are, the more people will want to have your kids.

Anyhow, this is a pretty big subject and an impossible quest to accomplish online I've put myself in...
Weight Loss Help: Am I in starvation mode? Jun 20 2008

Starvation mode, comes ONLY after there's no energy source other than your vital organs.

That meaning, no under-skin stored fat is available, no energy comming from digestion available.

I'm pretty much sure that if you're asking, you're nowhere close to starvation mode.

What you might be in, is efficient metabolism mode, where you use your energy stores efficiently and burn less calories per day, this is not very bad for you - it's your body adapting to the new situation... it's at times like this, when you can't get enough calories where you need your body to become efficient (if you put losing weight aside for a moment).

Just get through it and start dieting normally, and stop worrying.

It is all still linked together...
You want to live,  and be powerful (relatively to what you are now).

why ? ask yourself that question... I think that if you'll go deep enough you'll get to a point where you say to yourself you have liabilities in life, and the reason you are having these liabilities are all linked to your family in one way or another - and looking after the family means you want to keep the continuation of yourself.

That's what I think, heh

yes it does matter how much you eat...
the difference is between becomming handicapped and not becoming handicapped.

losing weight means catabolizing your body, and catabolizing your body means taking off whatever is unnecassery.. and that means that if you don't do excercise you'll become a sleepy energyless couch hugging handicapped person... =]

Na you won't become handicapped, but your posture combined with low energy levels will make you pretty (right) ugly.
Weight Loss How is eating 6 times a day but only 596 calories right? Jun 20 2008

YOU CANNOT LOSE 2 POUNDS A WEEK

The only stable weight loss you can keep is 1 pound a week, if you lose 2 pounds it'll quickly go from 2 to 1.5 and then drop to 1 and when you get to that 1 pound weight loss, eating that little calories, you'll gain it all back if you eat just a little bit more than your bird-sized meals.

Also, you'll feel sick the whole time.. And it's very likely that you'll break and gain more than you started with, and more than that - your BMR will drop and you'll burn less calories daily than you used to.

I know my mom did it while having me go to friends on a weekly routine (sunday you go to this friend, monday this one, this day that friend that day this friend blabla)

That stopped and she signed me up to group activity.. such as painting or model airplane building etc..

Ask your kids they might actually be interested in doing these activities and you'll find time to do ****-excercises :P

It all begins in the essence of life - continuing yourself by having kids.

Saying the bottom line above, I'll jump right back to the start of it all.
Beauty - beauty is why.

Beauty, is nature's way of measuring healthy genetics. Semetrical creatures are more attractive, beautiful skin is more attractive, beautiful hair is more attractive, beautiful eyes are more attractive.. and I'll tell you why, and why they are beautiful.

We are programmed to preceive good genetics as beauty in our primitive mind. Just as we know to cry or smile - we know to identify humans with good genetics.

Being identified as a person with good genetics opens up doors to having kids with other people with good genetics, which as already said at the first line, is our goal.

Our kids, are our goal.. And our kids goal is also having kids, and so on.
To make sure our family keeps on living, in a successful manner, we choose a partner with the best genetics we are able to find - The smartest and most beautiful human being of the other sex available.

So, how is that related to fat ?
As you can see, you as we all, preceive fat as ugly, and we try to lose it when we have it in excess - that is ALL related to the issues that come with it: heart disease, cancerious tumors, diabetes, etc etc...

So, it's all related to being healthy and showing off THE REAL, MOST NURTURED genetics of yourself, to find a partner in life.

I hope this answers your question.
Weight Loss I need advice about halting a low carb diet Jun 20 2008

Do it, don't even think about anything weight related..

The longer she stays in her low-carb high-protein diet the less time she lives.
Atkins (I think that was his name), the protein-power no-carb dude, died at the age of fourty something because of his stupid diet.. Proteins with no carbs kill, people died water fasting while taking protein-only shakes.. It is toxic, it does bad for her liver, her stomach...

Why are people so stubborn and not just do it right.. Take her to do blood tests and send her to a nutritionist..

It really depends what kind of sex you are doing.. You can burn like 50 cals if you're doing a quickie but if you plan a nice long session including many different positions on many different objects using your flexibility and muscles it may go up pretty quickly, and seeing as it's a pretty fun activity you won't even feel like it's a workout :P

You gotta have a very open minded partner tho ;)
Weight Loss back fat: how do i lose it? Jun 20 2008

stop worrying about specific areas and start losing fat weight.. if there's fat, and you've lost enough from all the other places - it will be burned eventually.

and why the heck are you eating 1200 cals ? that's like 400-600 less than your RMR (sleep metabolism)

What you find on the internet is a gamble, the information you get could be partially or all wrong.

Why not write down all of his physical data and see a nutritionist yourself for him? and on the way you could learn some new things that are probably less questionable than what you learn on the internet.
Weight Loss fruit & veg only? Jun 15 2008

I've tried it, doesn't work.
Not because the diet doesn't make you lose weight, just because it's impossible to keep it up.

Don't go this extreme, it never works - just when you go out don't go for the fatty foods - eat a tuna salad or something and keep a balanced diet.

And the thing is is not just because the protein and fats are important, they are also what usually goes to your fat when you overeat (there's a need for carbs constantly, fat and protein - not as much), and you WILL crave them, badly, and lose your sense of satisfaction when you get out of it.

If you think logically, leaving behind the ease of "yeah I'll just not eat what I find hard to control", I can tell you there's no reason why to cut them out if you are able to control them (and it's easy if you know what you eat for the whole day), if anything, there are alot of reason why NOT to cut them out, one is that they would draw back your weightloss by making you tired and craving the whole time.

I'd suggest an easy-made diet, for example cornflakes with milk for breakfast, 3 simple black bread sandwiches (with tuna/yellow cheese and veggies) and 3 fruits for the day and a big salad with 1 spoon of olive oil and chicken breast for dinner.

^ This is a diet composed of simple foods and if you follow it you'll see changes in yourself - because this is a balanced diet, you get everything from it, in just the right portions.

By the way - fruits and veggies are composed mostly from carbs :P
Weight Loss Is it possible to REALLY eat what you want when losing weight? Jun 15 2008

Yes eat whatever you like to lose weight.
With an emphasis on losing weight, weight, not fat..

You ARE what you wat, if you eat crap all day - you'll look like crap, and feel like crap :)
If you eat the good stuff - you'll look good, and feel good.

Good luck ;)

Coffee is evil, it's a drug - don't take it.

Also.. If I look at your profile, you're using (almost only) fat all day to survive. This makes your body depend on it, and explains your fat profile.
About the workout plan - I'd add more sugarish-energized workouts, try interval running or go to the GYM for weightlifting.

If you take a look at picture of 100m runners, and a look at a picture of a professional walker or marathon runner, you'll notice the 100m runner is MUCH leaner, even if they both burn the same amount of calories - the 100m runner uses more sugarish energy during the day than the marathon runner, so his body might aswell neglect a little bit of fat burning efficiency (use more fat for less workload) and focus more on sugar efficiency (use less sugar for more workload).

^ Just a developed theory :) Good luck !

Another thing about dieting: It goes like this - Eat your guessed amount of calories (guessed - just asif you asked me "if someone enters the room, how tall would he be ?" I'd reply 1.75 - why? cause that's the average), and then look at the scales each week, at the exact same time, and at the exact same stomach and hydration state (preferably in the morning - empty and dehydrated).

As you've probably heard before, the scales don't lie. If you stay the same - take a little bit of food off the menu (and don't calculate calories - look at the exact same menu and take some, little portions, off), and then check next week - if you lost more than 1 pound, add some food back, if you lost less - take some food off. And that's the real way to diet.
As advised, and with many many good reasons, you should consult a nutritionist with any change to your diet.

Yeah, I did excercise.. I did both aerobic and anaerobic, though it really doesn't matter what you do if you want to burn fat.

The fats will burn, if you work out and even if you don't (it's all about the food) - almost just as much in both cases.  Though, the difference I've learned between the two is whether or not you're going to mess your body up or not. If I don't work up, eat enough so my body catabolizes self (which is the goal when losing weight), you'll get muscle atrophy.

My plan is basically like this:
* On busy weeks I do morning runs at 3/7 days of which I choose to be the least stressing, and have 2 anaerobic excercises at the evening, usually monday or tuesday or sunday and wednesday. (These busy weeks come to me in about once or twice a month)
* On more laid back weeks I do 4-5 runs, again usually in the morning and have an anaerobic A/B plan.
