Health & Support i went kind of crazy... Sep 15 2012

you're playing around with your life. i'm also around that weight (dropped down over the past few months after getting a bit better for awhile), and i didn't start to feel better until i allowed myself to 'over indulge' regularly and rest. you say you have a lot of energy, but are you really listening to your body? i'm so weak and tired all the time; any 'bursts of energy' i get come from the fear of not being active, and i force myself to do things, and i know this is just putting strain on my poor body. please take care!

unfortunately, all you can do is DO. make a meal plan and follow it, distract yourself to stop the thoughts from getting overwhelming. you know what you need to do. you definitely need someone to talk to, a friend, a counsellor, a parent, anyone who is even just willing to listen. keeping everything inside is the worst.

Health & Support HELP! I'm terrified of eating too much... Sep 13 2012

these are pretty much the exact thoughts going through my head all the time.
i used to max out at around 1000 calories a day, and that put me in hospital with a feeding tube, multiple times. lately i've been able to get up to 1500 without too much distress, but sometimes it's still hard to justify eating more.
remember that 2000 calories is an average daily intake, so of course you're going to want at least 800 before dinner!
i find it helpful to eat things that i don't know the calories of; it stresses me out a bit, but it stops the constant counting.

no, you're not eating plenty.
you are harming your metabolism by eating 800 calories a day.

i like everything about this post.
:)

not to say that it isn't a struggling, but speaking from experience, you can make that struggle easier or harder, depending on which mindset you choose to take.

looks great, and healthy! you've got nothing to worry about.
(i think i just had to comment because this looks like a totally stereotypical vegan meal plan, minus the meat, of which there is very little of; i'm vegan, and therefore i approve).

i'm not going to post my eats, even though it looks like a lot. i've added up the calories over and over and even allowing for unknowns and over-estimations, i'm still not reaching the minimum requirement for this thread, i apologize.

i did want to say a few things, though...

katja_patches: it doesn't look like lack of variety is a problem; what a fantastic menu! i'm jealous. although i have to ask, under what circumstances did you have a single teaspoon of ice cream? taste test? hardly a snack. :\

i had sunflower seed butter this morning! probably not a full serving, but i'm working on the added fats. :)
and i'm going to make homemade pizza for lunch!

college29: every body is different, of course. my dietitian recommended 1800 for me to start out on, and this week i gained quite a bit, but we know from experience that i will probably need upwards to 3000 to gain any 'real' or sustainable weight. are you satisfied with the 1800? if so, fine, but if you're still hungry, even if you are gaining on 1800, you're going to want to eat more, and your metabolism will probably speed up.

Health & Support please, please help me... Sep 08 2012

well, throwing up is your body's way of saying WHATEVER I JUST INGESTED NEEDS TO LEAVE RIGHT NOW, so you're probably not able to purge because your body really doesn't want to vomit.

Health & Support calories =data over night? Sep 08 2012
12:17 (UTC)

i don't really understand 'calories = data over night', but your body doesn't divide time into days. if you eat 5000~10000 calories over the course of, say, 16 hours (allowing 8 hours for sleep), some of that will be stored as extra, since your body may have only used 3000 calories during those 16 hours, but it doesn't automatically pile on as fat. calories do not 'turn into fat'. a calorie is a unit of energy, and your body uses that energy for every single process it does, both conscious (activity, movement, exercise) and unconscious (keeping your organs and metabolic processes working properly). what isn't used for that, does get stored, but not automatically as fat.

i hope i'm not just talking out of my butt here... can anyone confirm?

Health & Support Why I will NEVER EVER go back to ED!!! Sep 08 2012

30

every time i read the title here, i think, 'because it's horrible and sucks balls'. :P

after finally experiencing some benefits of gaining weight (actually having the strength to get up, go for walks, do things, rather than forcing myself to), i know that i never want to feel as weak as being at a low weight made me feel, ever again. i'm heartbroken that i felt so great, only to somehow lose it again (see my recent stupid posts).
the difference this time is that, because i have experienced feeling better due to eating more, i know that eating more does indeed make me feel better, and feeling better feels good. :)
the only alternative is to go back downhill, and that feels awful, and i do not want to feel that way ever again.

Health & Support how? Sep 07 2012

i would say, experiment! if it took you 4000~5000 to gain, you could easily need ~3000 just to maintain. listen to your hunger and try not to count, maybe?
congradulations!

Health & Support normal eating???? Sep 05 2012

i'm probably not the best person to be giving advice, since i'm severely underweight and struggling with these ridiculous eating disordered thoughts, but i can assure you that eating more does not automatically equal weight gain. i eat baked goods and take-out meals and all kinds of 'unhealthy' foods and i'm still not gaining.
if it makes you feel better, even if eating certain foods did cause you to gain weight, at this moment, you don't have to worry about that, since you need to gain. take advantage of the fact that you need to gain, and eat whatever; the worst case scenario is that you gain weight, which you need to do anyway! :)

the thoughts are my problem right now, too.
i listen to a lot of podcasts, watch movies, tv shows, anything so there's another noise outside of my head to drown out the voice in my head.
getting everything out in writing helps, even if it's just a stream of random words. once you have a sheet of paper covered in scribbles, tear it up, burn it, toss it away!

take care.

it doesn't really matter what's 'normal'.
you need to gain weight, so don't worry about what someone who isn't trying to gain eats.
you feel like **** because you're not healthy yet, you need to eat more, and keep eating more until you feel better.
have muffins and scones and cake if you want, it won't do any harm at all.

Health & Support frustrated to tears! Aug 26 2012

this is so ridiculous. go to sleep at 8pm (since i'm oddly tired, despite being inactive all day), wake up starving at 1am, eat, go back to sleep, wake up at 7/8am, want to eat so much food, but the numbers in my head add up and stop me. my meals are between 200~300 calories usually, so anything above that makes me really uncomfortable, but i obviously need more than that for a meal, right?
here's what i'm planning on having later (it's 3:30am, just ate about 200 calories, going back to bed soon) :

-brown/wild rice mix (1/4 cup dry)
-baked sweet potato (1/2 cup, maybe more)
-cauliflower (30?) and peas (40)
-dehydrated soya chunks (50ish)
-some kind of chutney or sauce (50ish?)

that's over 400 calories, and i'm freaking out.
