The Lounge Cat Lovers...How true is this? Feb 25 2008

10!!  I love when kitty snaps his ear - lol!!  Our boy cat Goober has gotten into a habit of sitting on top of the TV on my dresser...naughty naughty, so now I have to leave the door shut all day (and all night so the two don't bug us).  That sure doesn't stop the kitties from scratching under the door to get in, jumping at the knob, or trying to climb the door frame.  Weirdos.  Tongue out

Do love the clip though!!

That happens to me too...someone told me it's because all your energy is used to start to digest the food you just ate and so blood rushes to your digestive tract.  I don't know if that's completely true, but it makes sense for the cold feeling.

First of all, is that the limit that CC has given you after you have provided your height, weight, and activity level?  You may want to go ahead and find a BMR calculator and put your information in there as well to be aware of that number.  BMR is the amount of calories your body naturally burns sustaining life if a person were to lie in bed and do nothing all day.

I know it can be hard to stay within that limit, especially this time of year when there is Valentine's Day and Easter (big candy holidays).  Some things to keep in mind when it comes to eating healthy is to consume about 20g of fiber in a day.  Fiber takes longer to digest and therefore keeps you fuller for a longer period of time which also helps you from overeating at other meals.  I like FiberOne bars, and they even come in a chocolate flavor - yum!!  Snacks like apples have fiber naturally occurring in their skins, otherwise fiber is found in whole-grain breads and other sources of whole-grain.

Otherwise, if you eat a lot of full-fat products, try the low-fat or fat-free versions, you really can't notice much of a taste difference in my opinion.  Cottage cheese doesn't taste any different in the fat-free version, and you can jazz it up by adding fruit for a sweet snack.  Low-cal yogurt options are Yoplait Light at only 100cal per pot, or Dannon Light-n-fit at 60cal per pot (this one seems watery to me though).

If you eat a lot of meat, try substituting ground turkey for a hamburger or in recipes that call for ground beef.  It is still okay to have red meat in moderation, but go for the leanest cut available (97% or leaner) to reduce fat intake.

The key in eating healthy and beginning a successful change to your body is smaller meals more often.  If you have: whole grain toast with peanut butter for breakfast, an apple or another piece of fruit about 3hrs later, spinach salad and a chicken breast (no larger than the size of a deck of cards) for lunch, FiberOne bar or protein shake as another snack 3hrs after lunch, a choice of fish filet with fruit and steamed vegetables for dinner, and a low-cal yogurt for a dessert/snack style last meal that could be a sample menu for you while encompassing a good balance of carbs, proteins, and fats as well as good nutrients from fruits and vegies.

You are incorporating a nice amount of exercise, but to notice a loss in fat you will want to kick up the intensity of your cardio workouts.  40min 4x/week or more would be ideal to start to show results.  Hope this helps!! Good luck and welcome to CC!!

Weight Loss Too much deficit? Feb 21 2008

techdog - congratulations on losing 90+ lbs and being able to keep with it, that is an incredible achievement!!  I will have to keep browsing the forums and learning as much as I can.

montynod - welcome!!  It's always nice to see that more people are joining this community because they are passionate about their health.  I know it's important to have protein soon after a workout, but besides cottage cheese, regular cheeses, and turkey, there's not a whole mess of other foods I can think of (or enjoy) as sources of protein.  Maybe that's where I have trouble, I eat a lot of carbs...

Okay - I see what you mean about using an online calculator...I Googled it and then plugged in my measurements and it came up with 31.23% - I almost cried!!  Where would I get the body calipur measurements done?  Dr.'s office??

dalmalama - stinky mcstinkface! Tongue out

Thanks for the quick responses everyone!!  In terms of skincare I use spf 15 lotion daily and use a Dove bar and bufpuf sponge for cleansing.  Are there any benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid products I should try instead in order to fight off acne?  I feel like I've tried everything from here to the moon but the only thing that really worked for me was Proactiv.  But, alas, it got too expensive for my budget and bleached all my pillowcases and towels.  I have combination skin and when I get whiteheads I love to pick em.  I know that's really bad, but I can't resist, when I see something pop up I have to get it OUT.

cellulitedelight - do they make a sensitive skin version of the apricot scrub?

missli -  is the Clinique product you mentioned a mask, lotion, or spot treatment?

jjlovecub - thanks for the info about the burn meter.  I've placed my settings at sedentary and then add activities based on the notion that the settings think I'm doing very little.  As I add those things, the burn meter fluctuates to a much higher level...from about 1650 without activities added to about 2250...so how should I calculate my deficit if I don't have a realistic view of the burn??

All of this gets really confusing to me, I just want to know a proper goal of cals per day to eat to sustain healthy muscle but NOT gain fat.

Also, are there any online calculators where I can plug in my measurements to find out my body fat percentage?

Thanks for your help everyone...also to bufflara, I'm sorry I've taken over your post!!

I have something along the lines of this same question as well.  I don't really understand how to interpret the CC burn meter so that probably doesn't help either.  On a given day my food intake looks something along the lines of...

B - 1 c cold cereal w/ .5 c light soymilk

S - fiber one oats & chocolate bar

L -  turkey sandwich: 3 slices turkey, 1 slice swiss cheese, 1 tbsp salsa, 2 slices whole wheat toast

S - yoplait light yogurt or a medium sized apple

D - smart ones entree...or if not that, something with noodles usually

My CC limit is about 1300-1400 cals/day, I tend to go over that though but is that too much or too little of a deficit?  I suppose this relates to the burn meter I don't understand...Undecided

As far as exercise goes, I go about 4 times a week always with at least 25 minutes of cardio (elliptical, biking, or walking/jogging intervals uphill on treadmill - I rotate these three routines), stretching, tricep workout, abdominal bicycle-style crunches, push-ups, squats using a medicine ball, and lunges.

My goal in all of this is to lose body fat and inches (I'm trying to not be so focused on the scale numbers, but the physical appearance instead) and show the muscle I'm toning underneath.

Okay!!  There it is, any advice is greatly appreciated.

I like to put salsa on my salads as dressing.  Actually, I just finished my lunch that was a new one I came up with: romaine, spinach, cherry tomatoes, a few cubes of chicken breast, a sprinkle of parmesan cheese and salsa on top.  It was really yummy and only (based on CC) about 90 cals.  My favorite salsa is Newman's Own brand bandito salsa which is just a basic chunky style tomato salsa, but I still want to try the mango and pineapple styles too.  Hope this gives everyone a little inspiration to try salsa!!

I totally agree with agana...although I love seeing numbers go down on the scale, the really good feeling comes from feeling ALL my jeans getting baggy.  Seriously, every single pair now needs a belt when I wear them because of the size difference.  You can't have a 900 cal/day plan because it does nothing but put your body into starvation mode and make it harder to lose weight in the long run.  Your weight isn't going down because of the water retention due to your time of the month.  Patience really IS the key - remember to keep your cal intake high enough for your BMR (you can find a calculator on here) and get enough sleep, exercise, and water!!  I have a problem with patience too, but it's better to wait it out and lose weight the healthy way instead of going on a crash diet and putting your body in shock.  Good luck!!

Ha - maybe I need to update my profile because there's no way I'm eating under 1100 I track everything and it's more than that.  But the nails are still bluish...

I don't know for certain if I'm iron deficient but before I started including iron in with my other vitamins I was constantly tired and sluggish and now I don't feel that anymore and the only thing that really changed was adding iron so I just assumed it was helping.  Will it be bad for me if I continue to take it even though I may not have an iron deficiency?

I'm not quite sure what fruits and vegetables are best in terms of minerals and vitamins, but I've always heard to eat lots of green leafy vegetables.  I like spinach a lot but what else could I add?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

Tomatoes!! Without a doubt my favorite - they're so yummy.  I like them raw on salads or stewed in marinara sauces and I'm just starting to get used to the taste of V8 so that's another way they're so great.

I love flavored carbonated water...brands like La Croix, H2Oh!, Mendota Springs, or generic brands from Target or WalMart all come in tasty flavors and have NO cals at all!!  Otherwise another trick I like is to buy a bottle of lemon juice and mix a small amount of that into a bottle of plain water to give it a twist.

I like teas as well, but don't limit yourself to just green tea.  It is packed with antioxidants, but so are a lot of black teas such as Earl Grey and English Breakfast.  Chai tea is good for you too, but be wary of adding too much milk/cream and sugar in order to make it taste like the ones at Starbucks.  You can still get the flavor without the extras.

Fuze drinks are really good too - only 5 cals per 8oz serving.  If you like drinking diet pop but don't like that diet-y, artificial sweetener taste try Fresca they have 3 different flavors that are sweet without overdoing it.

When I am feeling lazy about getting to the gym (which is a lot - I have a hectic schedule), I just think of how good I'll feel about myself after I've gone.  Knowing that I can come home and relax - maybe in a bubble bath - is always an incentive too.  I also read Self magazine while I'm on the elliptical machine, it helps time pass a lot faster.

Good luck!!

Hi!  Brand new to the site - loving it already!

I'm not sure if I fall under the same categories as some of the other YCCs on here, so please don't judge me.  I have a lot of body insecurities and have done the yo-yo dieting and don't want to gain back any weight I lost (13 lbs in 10 days, not the healthy way though).  My main goal is to lose fat and gain healthy muscle in order to see some definition in my arms, thighs, abs, etc. but lose those hips!!

 I'm 19, 5' 3", 122 lbs - ultimate goal would be 115 by May 1, '08.

I'll be excited to hear back from anyone!!
