Motivation Losin' It! Check in here Aug 18 2007

Hey ladies, hope everyone is doing well! I've had a good week--back on track with eating and exercising, and broke into the 170s this morning, HOORAY!!! Other big news is I'm buying a house! First time for me, and the offer was accepted last night, so think it's all a go. Preoccupation with all the house stuff has made it way easier to forget about food--I'm hitting my target cals for the day, but not being tempted to eat more, because I've got too much on my mind!

Hey guys, nice to hear from you both!

Kim, so sorry about the a/c sitch--I had something simliar happen a couple years ago in August, in Texas--on the third day w/out a/c, I went and checked myself into La Quinta, and deducted the bill from my rent!!

Dana, I hear you on the cheat days--I'm coming off of a couple of cheat WEEKS. Sounds like you did a good job sticking with the exercise and eating sensibly otherwise, so I think you've got the right attitude. I like the idea of one cheat day though--think that might help me keep things under control a little better.

I'm THRILLED to report that not only did I get back on track with eating well today, but I also FINALLY managed to get myself back to the gym this eve (it's been three weeks), and it felt great (at least afterwards!). I can def tell I've lost some ground during my "break," but the important thing is I got my butt back in there, so I'm heading in the right direction!

Hey all, I'm back in the loop, and as of today am offically back on the diet and exercise wagon! How's everyone doing? Must say that much fun as I've had being bad (drinking to excess, going out with friends or just sitting in front of the tv instead of going to the gym), I'm looking forward to the sense of purpose and personal satisfaction I get from really taking care of myself.

Hope everyone is doing great--are we going to start a new group, as suggested a couple posts back, or is the group sort of falling off? Was surprised to see so few posts in my absense.

I think the trick is making it 'conscious' cheating--not a mindless binge, where you just sort of give up--but some planned excess, along with a plan to offset the results of those excesses. And sounds like you're doing both of those things, so I say, have fun, try to keep your 'cheating' to a reasonable level, keep up the exercise, and you'll be fine. We do have to live a little in the midst of trying to lose the weight!

Losin' it sounds good to me, and motivation is EXACTLY what I need, so that sounds good, too! Haven't done so well on the getting back on track thing--Friday instead of sticking with my plan to hit the gym after work, I took a friend up on an invite to leave the office a little early and hit the pool (for the lazy kind of swimming that allows one to keep a beer above water at all times). I haven't been eating TERRIBLY, and in fact am back to down to 181.6 (was 184 on Weds when I returned from vacay). Anyway, I am going out of town again this week for work, so have basically decided to just plan to get back to hitting it hard when I return and have more control over my food and exercise--will def check out our new group thread when I get back, if I don't 'see' you guys around before then!

Thanks for advice, Dana. Drinking is actually one of my big downfalls, too; not only from the calorie perspective, but the "oh, who gives a crap," attitude that sometimes accompanies the drinks! I try to limit myself to 2 drinks when I just feel the need for a cocktail on a regular old wednesday night, but still allow an occassional blow out of 4 to 6 when I'm out w/friends.

After reading knitcorner's post and some of her journal, I decided to start journaling here myself--I'm thinking that writing down my intent to exercise each day might really help keep me on track. Accountability seems to be a real key for me!

Hey knitcorner, welcome to the group, and thanks for 'friending' me--I've been a member of the site for a couple years, but only put up a profile and started in the posts in the last couple months, so am just now starting to make friends!

Anyway, feel like my 'lapses' are coming more frequently, too--like kimber, I've been yo-yoing the same 5 pounds for several weeks (been in the low 180's since the beginning of July). I just got back from a vacation w/my extended family, and now am going to be out of town for work for three days next week, so will be at least a week and half before I can get back to a good routine.

I find it slightly easier to control my diet than I do to motivate to te gym--I normally work out with weights and swim for my exercise (it's too hot in Texas for walks in the summer, at least in the early eve, when I like to do my exercise). Anybody else have this problem with exercise motivation?

Mostly I like the compliments (I've lost 50 lbs), but there's this one woman, who's the receptionist on the floor I work on, so I see her about 10 times a day, and at LEAST once a day for the last couple months she calls me over to comment and to ask what I've been doing to lose the weight. Mind you I've told her about a 100 times that I'm basically just eating less and moving more (the truth!!), but she continues to ask. I don't know what she wants me to say, and I'm tired of having her spotlight on me OVER and OVER again. It's just weird and slightly embarrassing after the first 10 times!!!

23 cals in an ounce of wine, so about 575 in a bottle (~25ounces). I usually limit myself to two drinks--wine, or otherwise--but got a little carried away tonight . . .

I'm also trying to hit about 1200 cals a day, but today (thanks to the wine--a whole bottle, mind you), i'm at nearly 1,700. Just ate a dill pickle and a couple pineapple slices (for the low, low calorie "price" of 26 cals!), and that seemed to do the trick so I can go to bed feeling satisfied.

Hey ladies, just checking in---how's everyone doing? I've had a pretty good day diet-wise (well, except for drinking more wine that I'd intended, but I cut out my after dinner snack to compensate), but had planned on working out and swimming today, and then failed to motivate when the time came (after work). Any advice on motivating for exercise? Hope everyone is doing well. OH, and good news is that I'm back down to 181 (at least I was this a.m.!!).

I love the pool, too, and only started swimming for "organized" exercise this year (I'm 37!). I took at beginner's swim class at the Y in March, and have been swimming laps for exercise since then. It's GREAT, I LOVE it!

I don't worry about this at all, and I honeslty don't think it makes a bit of of difference--the whole idea of having a "cut off" time seems to be more about curbing late-night overeating (which is a prob for LOTS of people). So if you're within you're calorie limits for the day, I'd say feel free to go to bed IMMEDIATELY after a meal if you wish!

Dana, just had to respond when I saw your post--when I started on synthroid I realized all the people in my life had been dealing with a very cranky me for several years straight. AMAZING what a difference meds can make!!!

And for what it's worth, Jackie, I also think the best advice is to move on, AND even more importantly, recognize the fact that you made an honest attempt to eat right and avoid what you thought wasn't good for you--that's WAY more than half the battle!!!

I may be sorry I'm asking, but what is the 1200/1500 rule? I'm assuming the 1200 part is the number of calories to never go under (at least if you're a woman). What's the 1500 part?

I like yogurt w/berries for a "midnight" snack--really seems to fill me up and satisfy for under 100 cals (dannon light & fit vanilla yogurt, usually w/1/2 cup raspberries). Whatever you do, eat something reasonable that you won't feel bad about!

thanks for the link, merrily! I scored as a ruler, which I guess is prob accurate, even if it's the last thing I would compare my current body to! I've been swimming for the past few months, which is a new exercise for me, and I love it! Also working out with weights, and occassionally getting in a walk, when the weather cooperates.

wow, those of you w/pics all look GREAT--I'm a little intimidated! Nonetheless, I'd like to join: I'm 37, 5'5, and weighed in at 183.6 today (I'm up a couple of pounds--had a bad week, and couldn't get motivated to exercise AND indulged myself with lots of pizza!). My start weight in January was 233, so I'm down 50 pounds, but I've got 50 more to go--look forward to getting some support from you lovely ladies!
