If I understand you correctly, you are not going to live in actual San Francisco, but more south, around San Jose.  That is much cheaper, but still expensive.  I lived in Santa Clara for 15 years in a one-bedroom apartment for around $1,400 a month.

While you are visiting, go to any supermarket and pick up a couple of apartment guides.  They are free and are usually located right at the entrance.  They list details on just about every apartment complex in the Bay Area.

I should mention that even though the Bay is nice, I was not able to afford a house and a much better standard of living until I moved away from there and to the Sacramento area.

Good Luck!

After spin class every Tuesday and Thursday I shower and head over to the cafeteria for lunch ('cause I'm freak'n starvingk!).  As soon as the cook sees me coming she throws a veggie-burger on the grill.

Edit:  And that reminds me... gotta get ready!  Class starts in 15.

For the animals.  I don't give a hoot if it is healthier or not for me.  Presently, I still eat meat about twice a week, but I'm sure I'll eventually go all-in soon.

The way I see it, if a person can live without eating meat, then eating meat is not necessary.  If eating meet is unnecessary, then it is also unnecessary to slaughter all those innocent and defenseless animals.

...

Around my workplace we have a large flock of wild turkeys.  I go outside with my coffee and just admire them.  They are so beautiful in their own way.  I could get just six feet away from them, because they have not learned that they should actually be very, very afraid of people.

...And then I would go inside to the cafeteria and order a turkey sandwich.  Folks, How perverse is that?  To admire and love something and then turn right around and eat the same thing without a second thought or even realizing what you are actually doing?

If you have pets, you know they have feelings and each of them have their own personality.  How can I sit at home with my cat in my lap purring and loving it as a member of my family and then completely disregard the feelings of other animals?  Sure, a turkey isn't fuzzy and doesn't purr, but I can tell you that the turkeys do have feelings and their own personalities.  When I realized the hypocritical, perverse, double-standard that I was living, I knew I had to change my ways.

And I'll say it again.  I don't give a hoot if being vegetarian/vegan is healthier for me or not.  I'm doing it for the animals, not myself (well perhaps for my soul, if I had one).

Great article.  Scanned it... got the gist.

I think all too often people simply confuse opinions with facts and vice-versa.

Enroll in a spin class.  Your thighs will hate you for it.

Mine certainly do.

I avoid HFCS as well.  Whenever I have the option, I go natural.

For those that believe there is no difference between sugar and HFCS, I'm curious what is your take on Dr. Lustig's lecture here:

Put it on everything you eat.

better yet just eat straight avocado with all your foods

I'll 2nd this.  Sometimes I will just cube up the avocado, place it in a small plate and lightly salt it.  Maybe sprinkle with lemon juice.  Basically a cubed guacamole instead of mashed.  Then I just spear the individual cubes with a toothpick and slowly eat/enjoy as a healthy snack while watching TV.

I use it only for one thing... Chili.  And I've been debating if I should just stop using it for that as well.  All it does is add some texture.  To me, faux meat just seems like a crutch, like nicotine patches are for people trying to quit smoking.  I really don't need it, so it is rather pointless to use it.

Vegetarian Morning Star Farms Vs. Bocca Aug 17 2012

I don't eat them by themselves as "hamburger patties".  I thaw them, break them up and brown them in the skillet with olive oil before adding to a crock pot of vegetarian chili.  For this application I have to go with Boca.

I've found that the Boca browns in the skillet well and then holds it's shape better after it is added to the crock pot.  The consistency is just like browned hamburger and I'll bet that most people wouldn't know that it isn't meat.

On the other hand, I've also tried the morningstar chipotle black bean and it fell apart after a few hours in the crock and just turned into a dark muddy-mush.

The Lounge Ladies, do you find the male body repulsive? Aug 07 2012

I don't think we need to bring sex/sexual preference in this at all.

I think male and female bodies are both beautiful.  When I see a dude with a great body, I see and know that it is indeed a beautiful body.  It has nothing to do with my sexual preference.  I just don't want to jump on it and hump it.

Vegan doesn't necessarily mean deprivation.  There are famous athletes, actors/actresses and others that are anything but scrawny and gaunt.

There are vegan cookbooks and many, many robust and satisfying recipes on the good recipe sites.  Try them out.  Experiment and have fun.

Some great vegetarian chili recipes out there.  Not a supplement, but lots of protein and fiber.

And I can personally vouch that they are better than any chili you would ever find in a can, vegetarian or otherwise.
