Weight Loss Chewing gum: good or bad Jun 24 2008

If it works for you and you like it.. keep it up. Nothing wrong with it.

Also, just about everything gets your stomach juices flowing: thinking about food, smelling it, looking at pictures, etc. No harm in that either.. it's natural.

I recently started having a hot cup of tea in the afternoon. I think the Brits have the right idea. The hot liquid helps keeps me feeling satisfied til din-din.

Also on the liquid side.. Some days I'll have diet tonic with a lil lime and ice. I found the bitter helps curb appetite.

Hope that helps!

Health & Support "saving" calories Jun 24 2008

I do it and never want to get over it!  I've never enjoyed eating during the day. Never been a breakfast person either. Like you, I save the majority of my calories for the evenings when I come out of my shell.

To dispel a few myths that might be influencing your apprehension:

It's important to remember that its not WHEN you eat that matters, just how much you eat. I'm maintaining now at 2000 - 2100 calories a day and believe it or not 2/3's of those calories are consumed after 6pm. I'm doing fine. Haven't gained an ounce in 6 months.  Also, a good deal of those calories are carbs. Again, still doing fine (take that Atkins and South Beach fanatics).

I find it easy as I plan ahead. I'm in control of what I eat and when. When I meet someone for lunch and there are no good choices then I realize I have to give up something at night (which I hate).  I keep a calorie diary and I don't cheat. No "let's see 2 Chips Ahoy..  I'll round it off to 25 total"..

I hope that helps..

it's all about calories. As long as you're creating a deficit, you'll lose weight.

Welcome to CC!

Please don't concern yourself with carbs, it's a non-issue and been proven a non-issue by science time and time again.  And don't worry about WHEN you eat.. that desn't matter either.

If you want to loose weight create a calorie deficit by dieting (count your calories) and getting some exercise. I'm sure you already know this.. everyone does when you tell them.

The short version is, I lost 35#'s in about 6 months...and that's including those last 5-10#'s.. "the hardest to loose".  I ate everything I wanted ( bread, pasta, cheese, cake, candy, whatever) but counted calories and stayed within my daily limit.

I can eat this way for the rest of my life and will. No gimmicks, no special products to buy, just common sense.  I wish you the best! If you need support I'd be happy to help you!

Weight Loss Do you find that coffee or caffeine intake affect weight loss? Nov 06 2007

This is why people sell books. There's just so much misinformation out there mucking up the waters. I love coffee! Always have and always will. There is nothing wrong with it in moderation (like anything else). Water can kill you if you drink too much so just be reasonable and enjoy anything you want.

Foods What's your after lunch-before dinner snack? Nov 02 2007

Depending on my appetite I'm at either 400 or 500 after lunch. I get to 600 before dinner. When at 400 I like to break it up by 2 x 100 calorie snacks. So to answer your question, any of the following work for me:

Whatever fruit we have on hand:  Apple, Pear...  Still have some left over roasted pumpkin seeds (70 cal 1/4 cup), my old standby: plain rice cake with 1 teaspoon peanut butter (70 cal), maybe 100 calories worth of almonds if I can control myself..

Welcome to my life... I'm forced to count almonds. Lord help me..

Weight Loss How much more weight should I lose? Nov 01 2007

Take a look at my photo gallery. I'm 5'10" and currently 162.. I started close to 190, so you're a stronger man than I am my friend! Congrats on your loss... very impressive.

My goal is to hit about 158 or so..  but if I get to 160 I think I'll be quite happy.  Besides  counting calories (I did 1400-1600 per day, depending on the stage I was in) I followed the workouts by Harley Pasternak / The 5 Factor Diet. I'm more muscular than I was in my 20's. I highly recommend the book just for the workouts!

Hope that helps!

Hmmm...my opinion is that there is no such thing as a "high metabolism". You may think that your friends eat a lot but really they balance it out and eat less when you aren't watching. They are probably are more active than you as well.

I agree with you! I know people like that and I know that they are either a. active or b. just don''t eat much at all.

I have a friend who just "forgets" to eat some days. I just want to beat him to death with a rock.

Save your money.. My wife and I tried Hoodia and it was a waste.. it did nothing.

There is no magic pill.. Weight loss is all about patience and will power. Exercise and count your calories.. (rule 1: don't go below 1200) and you'll loose 1-2 #'s a week. There are no quick fixes Jona.

Don't go by BMI.. just as clairelaine stated.. Use more scientific indicators like: your bathroom scale and how your clothes fit you.
Weight Loss Eating majority of Calories in the evening...? Oct 29 2007
02:19 (UTC)

So if I eat over eat during the day I will just burn it off because I'm active?

No, no, no...

I agree with xo_ericaaa15 ...  It's about total number of calories, your body/digestion doesn't know the difference between 9am or 9pm. I eat 2/3 of my calories in the evening and I've been losing consistently. I just prefer to eat at night. That article states that "when your sleeping your digestion shuts down".. I'm sorry but since when does your digestion shut down??? That statement alone loses all credibility.  The metabolic process is 24/7.. That article smacks of MSN Health or something where they need to fill space.

Regarding blood sugar levels and insulin production, unless you're diabetic you're blood sugar doesn't change that much during the day to make any difference.   No offense to Bob Greene, but he can't seem to keep Oprah in check.. She yo-yo's more than a Duncan.

Don't give those crooks your money. The only way to see your abs is to burn the fat that covers them. You'll only do that through diet and exercise. There is no magic bullet.

Also, there are side effects to every medication.. why take a chance.

Just my opinion.

Weight Loss low calorie diet Oct 25 2007

Excellent advice from all the above. Cutting your caloric intake that drastically is dangerous to your health and you won't win (or loose) in the long run.

I've tried  just about every fad diet, every loose 10 pounds by next Tuesday, eat nothing but pineapples and cabbage soup diet out there.. They're all liars! The truth on weight loss is simple. BUT you have to really, really want it. AND you gotta do it. It's hard work and sucks sometimes but you'll be so happy in the long run. There are no quick fixes.

The most dramatic, consistent method of loss for me was the following:

1. 1200-1500 calories a day. Count everything you put in your mouth and don't just guess. Keep a joural and plan ahead so you don't cheat, go over your limit or starve.

2. Exercise. Do it at least 3 days a week. Start small with something you can do. Ideally, weight train 2-3 days and do cardio 3-5 days for 20-30 minutes. As you get leaner you can do more..  This is about the only thing you can do more of to help speed the process..

3. Stick with it long term. It's not going to happen overnight. I started with 2-2.5 pounds a week for the first month and then 1-1.5 pounds a week from there (only had like 25 to loose) but I stayed with it and am thrilled where I am now. 3 pounds to reach my goal.. I have not been at this weight since grade school.. literally!

Sorry for being long winded but you can do it I swear!!!

I've been on this site a short time but I can tell you that the people here are all wonderful and genuine! We're all here for support and have a common thread.  We all DO care!

Nice thing about hitting rock bottom is now you have no where to go but up. Lots of people get depressed in college, it's natural. The pressure is so high, not just in school but socially as well.

It's hard to imagine at a young age but this is one short stop on a long road ahead.

How about a few cliches to help you through:

There is harmony in disharmony

Behind the clouds, the sun is shining

It could be worse

Feeling bad is just a new sensation

Tomorrow is another day

I will survive

Every cloud has a silver lining

There is a light at the end of the tunnel

After the rain comes a rainbow

It's always darkest before the dawn

It has to get worse, before it gets better

Every rose has its thorn

Midnight is where the day begins

Cheer up, it's not the end of the world

This too, shall pass

Life's not so bad, when you consider the alternative

The sharper is the berry, the sweeter is the wine

And I always remember that little kitten, trying to pull himself up a chin bar.. Hang in there kitty!

Weight Loss It's soooo annoying! Oct 25 2007

Big rule in our house: don't bring home any temptations. Outta sight outta mind.

I'm Mr. Yo-Yo.. Every year, same thing (but not this year).. I'm good all year, then I pillage the kid's Halloween candy.. Now i've had sweet I need something salty.. chips! Now I've had salty I need sweet.. more candy.. You get the idea. A week later the kids ask where their candy went.. Look at daddy's man boobs and love handles.. there it is! Then we shift into Thanksgiving and Christmas and I wanna jump off a cliff after Valentine's Day.

This year I worked too hard and the weight is staying off forever. I've found peace and not going back to that candy stealing mad man I was!!!!

Try both ways and do whatever feels right for you. There's no steadfast rule about it.  I might suggest weight training prior to cardio however. You'll burn more fat that way.

Works for me!

I like grainy mustards myself.. No calories and lotta flavor.

Like with all things diet related.. plan your meals..pre-measure your ketchup serving(s) and stick to it. As kristenbutt stated above, when you actually measure how much you  take (without counting) it can add up!!

Be cautious with portion sizes! ha-rumpf!

Take a break from them. My fave snack is a plain rice cake with 1 teaspoon of peanut butter.. comes to about 70 calories.. Can't beat that when you crave something sweet or crunchy or nutty!

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
