I have no problems with animals who need to eat meat eating meat. While humans can eat meat, many of us who have access to sufficient plant protein (which is all of us in the First World, plant protein is cheaper than animal protein anyway), dont need to eat meat- therefore since physical necessity is no longer a justification for the consumption of animal products, one who chooses to consume animal products needs (IMO) to develop an ethical or environmental justification.

Ever heard of vitamin B12?  It only comes from animal products, and it's vital for human survival.  I don't know how long you've been vegan, but most long-term vegans need synthetic B12 shots.

How 'natural' (bull, by the way) is it to get a shot of chemicals?

Had a blended root beer float from Sonic a few weeks ago... bleargh.  375 calories I couldn't bring myself to finish.  Tossed it in the trash!

QUESTION OF THE DAY - SAT AUG 23

Saturdays are my "official weigh-in days" (OWIDs). Sometimes I have unofficial sneaky weigh-in days (USWIDs) in between.  Do you have an official weigh-in day?

MOLLY

I don't have an official weigh-in day, (bad, I know) I just weigh two or three times a week when I 'feel' thin.  Or really fat, if I want to torture myself.  :)

Popcorn!  You can eat it slowly, have lots of it, and it keeps you full forever.

Another:  Turkey breast lunchmeat with fat-free flavored cream cheese and 1/2 a banana.  The fiber fills you up, the protein make it digest slowly.  :)

QUESTION OF THE DAY -- FRIDAY AUGUST 22

Do you plan your meals/menus as you go throughout the day, or do you plan ahead? (Like when grocery shopping?) How and when do you decide what you will be eating on any given day?

MOLLY

I usually plan the night before in my head, but try to be flexible.  I have a lot of cravings.  :)

Usual meals:

Breakfast: 24 Frosted Mini Wheats biscuits, 1 cup skim milk, 1 banana

Lunch: 1 pb and j, carrot sticks, and more milk

Dinner: pasta with lean ground beef and veggie sauce, dark chocolate stick

May vary as new, exciting healthy alternatives turn up in grocery stores.

Hi!  My name is Brianne, and my goals are as follows:

Fiber: 25 or more grams

Water: 2 liters

Fruits and veggies: 2-3 servings of each

Fat:  30 grams or less

Ultimate goal:  Started at 170, now 146.8, want to be 125!

I've been following Molly's Diet Rants for some time now, though I never post.  What would I say?  "Funny as ever"?  But I love the idea of this group!

WRITE DOWN YOUR QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS!  Most people get very flustered when talking about personal things with physicians, especially with so much scrutiny on them, so it helps to have a written set of questions to take with you.

There was a lady at work who, when I told her about my weight loss, said, "Oh, you're going to have a ghetto butt forever, and there's nothing you can do about your boobs. Once you lose that belly you'll be so cute!"

I was so offended.  I happen to like my shape, thanks very much, I just want it... smaller.  I had to work really hard not to eat an ice cream later to make me feel better.

Hater!  She's just jealous... At least, that's what I tell myself.  :)

Hmm...I think she was actually trying to give you a (admittedly awkward) compliment.  She was trying to say you have a nice butt and boobs.  Maybe she assumed that since you mentioned your weight loss you wanted to lose your belly.  Just trying to give people the benefit of the doubt :).  I mean, haven't you ever said something with good intentions that didn't sound at all like you meant it?

I think maybe she might have been, but I didn't bring the subject up--she asked if I had lost weight, and I told her about it.  I have said things with good intentions that come out looking stupid (hey, I'm nineteen) but it was mostly her tone, if you know what I mean.  A sort of 'holier than thou' attitude.

Yeah... 'lose the belly.'  Hmph!  It's like you store all those nasty little comments in the back of your mind for a day when your self-esteem is in the dumps.

New thought, everybody!

I was just wondering about too little fat.  We all know, as IBS sufferers, that a low-fat diet is treated as somewhat akin to a Maggic Bullet.  We're encouraged to eat between thirty and sixty grams of fat a day.  (Not an easy thing to do in this era of Big Macs and Chili's Molten Cake.)

Dieters know it's easy to go overboard with a cutback.  I was wondering exactly how much fat a person needs in their diet for hair and skin health--not to mention lipid cell walls, but we won't go there.

If you only get ten or fifteen grams over the course of several days, can it make you sick?  Do you need to (gasp!) eat more?  Does it matter?

Just curious to see what people would say--I'm going to go do some research on it right now!

Weight Loss What motivates you the most to loose weight? Aug 08 2008

My reasons are twofold.  I'm a nursing student and I've seen at the hospital what being fat will do to your health.  There was one man I'll never forget--he was over five hundred pounds and had horrible ulcers from not being able to get out of bed.  All he could do was lay there and moan.  I thought, Surely I'm not going through all this work to become a healthcare professional just to end up like that!  The other reason is that I have IBS.  I need to eat healthy if I want my symptoms to be manageable.  So... fear and pain are my motivators?  Yeesh...

That said, my biggest motivator now (short term) is seeing the scale numbers go down.  I get so pepped and energized when I see the pounds go away, I just want to keep doing better!
