Health & Support Acne after Stopping Birth Control: How long does it last? Oct 10 2010

I am a little different than you because I did have bad acne to start with and went on Yasmin about three years ago specifically to treat my acne. It worked wonders for my skin. I wanted to try going off BC a couple of months ago to see how I would do without it, and my terrible acne came back within a month after stopping. I immediately went back on the Yasmin. I have been taking it for two months now, and my face is fairly clear, but I still have some cystic acne on my neck and jawline that hasn't resolved yet. I have pretty much come to the realization that I will probably need to be on birth control for most of my adult life to treat my acne. I'm not thrilled that I will have to take BC for a long time, but I would rather take it and not have acne than go without it.

Health & Support Hair loss has gotten worse, not better. Advice, please? Sep 30 2010

Thank you for all the replies. I have been in a panic as many people have posted on here saying their hair loss stopped within a 2-4 month time frame and mine is still falling out a lot.

Could it be possible that I need to gain more weight/up my calorie intake? I'm about 5'8 1/2" and weigh 126 lbs. My BMI is 18.9, and I eat around 2,000 calories a day with no exercise. What is a good BMI to be at to encourage hair growth and should I up my calories even more?

Hi lady. I'm sorry you're feeling this way. I know how stressful and upsetting this must be. I agree with the above poster that you should see a medical doctor to talk with him/her about your body image issues as well as your stomach/gland issues.

I really hope you get to feeling better soon.

Hang in there, hun.

I was thinking about this last night while watching Rachel Zoe. I noticed that her doctor said at least twice she could start "trying to get healthy" so she could conceive. I assume she was referring to her weight but that they wouldn't let that part be taped for the show.

I don't get it either, how some of these women can carry healthy babies.

As far as the hair, always assumed the emaciated women with "good hair" all have extensions in. Rachel's hair is way to thick to be all hers on that undernourished frame. Just my opinion of course. :)

April, I have to think you're right. Rachel Zoe is exactly the person who came to mind when I think of a celeb who is completely emaciated but still has a lot of really thick, long hair. I read somewhere that Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton both have really thin hair and have to use extensions too.

brinb213- Again, I think its an individual thing. I know that even though I lose hair, you wouldnt really be able to tell by looking at me because it is the type of hair that looks like there is a lot of it even when its really fine and pullling out in clumps!. The hair loss is more noticeable to you, and other people may not notice. So when you look at celebrities its the same thing.

This is true. No one has noticed my hair loss either. I'm sure having a personal team of stylists also helps the celebrities look like the picture of health when they're not.

I've wondered similar but more along the lines of how super thin celebrities manage to have gorgeous full heads of hair. I'm losing mine right now from losing weight and a lot of people on here have experienced hair loss as a result of dieting/limiting caloric intake. It seems to be really common so how is it that celebs who have clearly lost weight rapidly or are underweight (Rachel Zoe, Nicole Ritchie) still have full heads of hair? Even the super skinny runway models always have big goregous hair. My thought was they must use hair extensions because I don't know how even celebs could escape the hair loss that normally accompanies drastic weight loss and starvation diets.

Health & Support Yaz Birth Control Pill - day 4 and so tired. Sep 20 2010

I would call your doctor.  Many of the dangerous side effects of this birth control pill (particularly the blood clots), happen within the first few weeks of taking the pill.

I'm not saying that's what this is caused by, but it never hurts to err on the side of caution, especially if you've never been on any birth control before.

And may I ask where you heard this bit of information? On the internet or by word of mouth, no doubt. BC is not going to cause blood clots to form within weeks unless you already had the blood clots to begin with. As I mentioned above, a lot of people are on Yaz and Yasmin and are using it with no side effects. Studies have been done that show it's no more dangerous than any other birth control. If the FDA felt that it was responsible for all these horrible side effects people have been reporting, it would have been recalled a long time ago.

Studies have been done on Yaz and Yasmin and none of them show that it's any more harming than any other birth control pill. My gyno took me off it for awhile due to the lawsuits and recently represcribed it because of said studies. Of course all the reviews online are going to be terrible. People don't normally take to the internet to tell you how good something is, but they do if it doesn't work for them. Research any medication and you'll find forums of people who experienced adverse side effects and want to complain. These people are a small minority. You can't believe all the hysteria.

I have been on Yasmin for two years, no problems. My sister has been on Yaz for the same length of time, no problems. I have a pharmacist friend (whose career basically revolves around medication and who could tell you the side effects of any drug on the market) who also takes Yaz, no problems. Personally, I'd rather risk the potential side effects of taking hormones (and I have experienced none) than risk getting pregnant. Condoms are not a reliable method of birth control. They can break, they can come off, etc. I know plenty of people who have been on BC for years and years and again, no side effects.

So my hair's never going to stop falling out?

And I'm eating enough right now, I'm sure...

Don't worry, eventually your hair will stop falling out. However, it's not going to stop because you have been eating well for three weeks. I have been eating well for about two months and my hair is still shedding more than it should. When I first noticed my hair loss, I freaked out too and came on the forum asking questions. From what I have heard from several people on this site, hair usually stops falling out about 3-4 months after you start eating well and start gaining weight. Now, your hair loss may last a longer or shorter duration, I'm just giving you an average based on what I have been told by numerous people who have gone through the exact same thing. It's going to take some time. I know it's scary. There are days when I still have meltdowns about it. But all you can do is keep eating and wait. Try to be patient and keep your anxiety level down. This isn't permanent.

On another note, even though your hair loss is most likely due to being underweight, you still need to go to the doc to have bloodwork done to rule out any other possibilities like an autoimmune condition. Again, it's unlikely it's due to anything other than your weight loss, but you want to be sure.

Could it be possible that this is a byproduct of my only recently having restarted my periods (March 2010)? The irregularity, the finding a duration, etc.?

I am sure that is entirely possible. As I mentioned above, I have heard that EDs throw your hormones out of wack.

Good luck, hon! I hope this works for you. Also forgot to mention it, but to add some more calories in try Ensure shakes. They have about 250 calories in a little bottle and are loaded with vitamins and nutrients. They're very good if you're stressed or busy and don't have time to prepare a meal or snack. I drink two a day normally.

I have hormonally-based acne right now.  I am recovering from an eating disorder and I think my body is basically going through puberty all over again - at 34.  I found that benzoyl peroxide did not help.   I got my doctor to prescribe an antiobiotic & tretinoin cream called Steivamycin.   It is drying but I use it in small doses and it has helped.

Ah, you're so lucky. Hopefully your acne is only temporary due to your ED. I have heard that during an ED your hormones change and things like acne can occur. I'm glad topicals are helping you. I have had persistent hormonal acne since age 21 and after a year of trying everything I finally had to just suck it up and go on BC. I can't be without it or my face explodes in the most painful cystic acne. I will probably have to be on it until I hit menopause. =/

Unfortunately for many with hormonal acne, no matter what you do the acne continues. I tried everything including antibiotics, prescription topicals, tea tree oil, etc. The acne is resistant to it. Only on birth control does my skin clear. And while I'm on it I can go to bed with makeup on, not wash my face, never use acne products and my skin still stays clear. If it's hormonal, you have to change the underlying hormones that are causing the breakouts otherwise they will continue. Hopefully the poster is more fortunate and topical products will help her. They did nothing for me. =/

I have hormonal acne, except mine sounds worse as I do get the big painful cysts. I tried everything from topicals to antibiotics and nothing worked. My doctor wanted to put me on Accutane, but I refused because of the side effects. After a visit to the gyno, she suggested Yasmin BC for my acne. I think it took 3-4 months, but my face cleared up completely, and I had perfect skin. I even switched to another BC and it continued to keep my skin clear. Not one cyst. My skin was gorgeous. I stopped taking my BC for a month recently, and my face exploded in cysts again. =( I'm now back on the Yasmin hoping it works as well as it did the first time. For hormonal acne, BC is the only thing that worked for me. Just a thought.

Health & Support Weight loss and New deep ridges in nails? Sep 17 2010

You know, I started having more hair loss (shedding) after I lost my weight, and so I started taking a multivitamin. I am not sure it is working, but I know it cant hurt. From my reading I gather it is due to the lower fat intake. I do eat healthy fats now, but I was not getting enough for a little while there. Your body has to catch up when you change things so if you are taking supplements now but have not for a few months (or change eating habits) it may take a little time to see results of the nutrients being replenished. Your hair and nails have growth cycles that will need to complete- so the hairs lost have to be replaced and grow, the nail bed will have to grow out etc. The real concern is if you see patches of thinning hair, nails that are curving over the tips of your fingers and no longer growing etc.  There are crazy nail problems that will indicate certain diseases. Ridges are sort of ambiguous.

SO if you already have to see the doc it wont hurt to bring it up- sorry to sound like a broken record on that!

I have had hair loss as a result of weight loss too. Been eating healthy for two months now, and it's still shedding. My nails look great though. They're growing really long and are not brittle anymore. I really hope my hair starts growing next!

The other reasons for hair loss are not so easy to fix... I learned something new today, that hair loss in women is more likely to occur between the ages of 24 - 35 (not after menopause as I had assumed) it could possibly be alopecia but that can sometimes come and then go again for no reason at all.

You do realize that hair loss is common in this age group only because of 1. birth control use and 2. pregnancy?

She's stated that she lost a lot of weight and according to her current height and weight is probably now a little underweight. Most likely she's going through telogen effluvium as a result of her weight loss. I agree she needs to get to a doctor to test for all possibilities, but most likely this is the culprit.

Sheesh. If I had logged online for answers and read a post like yours when I first started going through my hair loss I would have had a heart attack. Most likely she's going through something temporary and needs to be reassured of that unless her doctor informs her otherwise.

1. I said that her hair loss could be due to medication (BC is medication)

2. Except it's not temporary, her hair loss has been going on for months.

3. Her weight is within the healthy BMI range she is not underweight.

4. she has been checked for the obvious things and asked for advice!!!

5. how much hair would YOU lose before you asked to see a specialist??? If it were me I would go sooner rather than later.

I agreed with you that she should see a specialist. I've lost 20-30% of my hair and have already been to see someone. I just thought your post was a bit...alarming, and I don't think it's good to make someone anxious of the possibility of permanent hair loss over the internet, especially when, according to the facts this person has stated, it is most likely temporary hair loss (telogen effluvium) due to weight loss.

I only underate for five months, have corrected my diet for the past two months and am STILL losing hair. I have been told by doctors this is normal and will cease. Most people on here who have gone through hair loss due to weight loss say it takes about 2-6 months after you begin eating healthy for the loss to stop. So YES, it is perfectly normal for her to be losing hair for months. It does not mean the loss is permanent at all. The body takes time to heal and regrow hair after losing a lot of weight.
