Weight Loss Just had my BMR taken - WTF??? Apr 23 2010

How did this expert determine your BMR? Did you have to lie on a hospital bed enclosed in a sealed tent/bubble whilst remaining perfectly still for at least 45 minutes, while the gases from your breath were measured? Did you have to fast   beforehand? If not, I would take his advice with a grain of salt. There are plenty of calculators online, including CC's calculator, that can spit out a range of arbitrary figures depending on what algorithms they are based upon.

Technically, what i've described only measures RMR or resting metabollic rate, as BMR testing protocols are more stringent. However the terms are often used interchangeably.

I'm just over 5'2 and about 105lb. I've had my metabolism professionally tested, and it was determined to be 1205 cals per 24 hour period. Of course this is just the amount i burn at rest, and should be adjusted to account for activity.

sounds exactly like my family. i'm sick of being told i need to put on weight, or don't eat enough. sure, i do watch my calories, but i eat extremely well. far better than they do for that matter. i hear ya sister.

had the same thing when i went to dinner with my family the other night - decided to forgo the pancake wrap that went with the peking duck my family ordered. also didn't eat the skin.

Weight Loss Upping caloric intake. Oct 04 2009

i somehow survived on 1200 cals a day for years. that was with working out almost daily also. i thought i would gain weight if i increased my calories and was scared to do so for so long. however, within a couple of weeks of going up to 1500 calories, i went from around 16-17% body fat where i'd been for a long time, to about 12%. i am super cut now. i've also dropped a couple of kg in bodyweight and am now fluctuating between 46kg (101 lb) and 48kg (106 lb). my waist has gone down from about 60cm to between 57-59cm. i'm still working out 5-6 days a week (incorporating weight/resistance training, cardio, flexibility etc), but i feel a heck of a lot better and i am not tempted to binge like i did when i subsisted on only 1200 calories.

it's amazing how much more food you can fit into a day, and how much more satisfied you will feel too. i've had probably 10 serves of vegetables today, 200g lean meat, and yet still managed to fit a magnum icecream, chocolate and shortbread into my allowance. that's another thing i changed about my diet - i stopped worrying about counting carbs and eating late at night. my heavy training schedule probably demands that i eat a lot more carbs (including simple carbs) than i previously had.

i suggest you give it a try - maybe work your way up over the course of a couple of weeks. if you gain or maintain you can always go back down.

congrats on losing so much weight!

i've had good experience with bio oil tightening the loose skin i had on my stomach. however i only lost about 45lbs so my skin was not quite as stretched. it couldn't hurt though. palmers stretch mark cream is also good - i mix the two together and sleep in cling wrap every night.

otherwise i've heard a device "galvanic spa" can be good for loose skin.

i should also add, although there's been tremendous improvement in the skin tension, it's still probably not as tight as someone who has never been overweight. i can see that there is still a little bit of laxity when i bend forwards. but overall, the improvement is amazing, and even my friends and my spray tan lady have noticed the difference.

i have lost about 20kg (44lbs) since the end of 2006, which is considerable for someone of my height. i did have some loose skin on my stomach, which bothered me a lot and made me self concious about wearing bikinis or midriff tops. the skin hung like a roll and caused a shadow/dent i used to hide by wearing high pants. i also had a really annoying stretch mark caused by deflated skin right next to my belly button. i started using bio oil, and eventually a mixture of bio oil and palmers strech mark cream twice a day. at night, i apply the mixture and wrap myself in cling wrap. in the morning, i reapply, then cover with a girdle type thing under my clothes all day. my skin has tightened up sooo much. i've posted a before and after pic of my stomach in my profile.

the tightening may also be partly due to a change in my exercise routine. i now do circuit training 3-5 times a week, weight training twice a week, a 3.5 - 4km run twice a week, and until recently was also playing netball (similar to basketball) twice a week. i was already doing the circuit and weight training when the before pic was taken, but the running is something i've probably only been doing for the past 3 or 4 months.

Foods I thought I was having a cheat day, but it kind of turns out that I didn't? Aug 06 2009

mmm... I am the same. it's bordering on eating disorder for me as i try to avoid occasional restaurant dining with friends because i won't know the exact calorie content. i also sneak my own drinks into clubs so i won't have to drink high cal ones. I've been counting calories for years, so it's a very hard habit to break for me. If you've only just started, please take my advice and do not count to the single calorie, or worse - to decimal points. I would also suggest making estimates when cooking, as opposed to weighing every ingredient to the gram.

calorie counting can really screw with your head

I wouldn't consider that a cheat day. For a cheat day i would try to avoid counting calories altogether. Of course, i'm not saying go nuts and eat huge quantities of anything you want, just eat what you want til you're satisfied.

I know from experience, if you don't loosen up occasionally you can really run into trouble. Don't let calorie counting become an obsession...

Health & Support DAY 1 without smoking Jan 29 2009

As someone who recently quit ciggies about a month ago, after smoking a pack a day for 10 years and a number of failed attempts, my advice is to try Champix.

it's a new drug you take twice a day. doesn't contain any nicotine but it really helps with the cravings. it took longer to start working for me than i was told it would, but once it gets to the right level in your system, it really works. i still had to get over the psychological/habitual addiction to smoking. and sometimes, even now i would probably like a cigarette. but, you won't be climbing the walls to have one. i found when i'd tried to quit cold turkey or with patches in the past, cigarettes would totally consume my thoughts. i hardly ever think about smoking since champix kicked in. i even work around people smoking and i'm no longer tempted.

patches keep you hooked on nicotine. you might as well light up another cigarette.

Weight Loss Loose skin, even if I'm young? Oct 15 2008

i'm 25, and have lost around 35-40 pounds over the last couple of years.

i don't really have masses of loose skin, but the skin on my stomach definitely does not have the same degree of tension than i believe most 25 year olds have. i know my stomach looks fine in my profile pic, but the sag at the bottom of my stomach has been airbrushed to look less severe. i've also got one annoying stretch mark that showed up only when i lost weight and my stomach deflated. it's right next to my belly button but was airbrushed out; a souvenir of my fat days.

it actually annoys me alot, especially now that i'm doing a bit of modelling and working with 18yr olds who have never been overweight in their lives. i've pretty much reached my goal and there's really not much fat left to lose. if i lose anymore, it may make the situation worse.

i am a heavy smoker though, and have been for years - so that probably hasn't helped my skin's elasticity. also, i never really bothered with moisturising my body for alot of years. so perhaps a good diet, no smoking and lots of moisturising might help prevent it from happening.

someone at my gym also recommended a device - galvanic spa II. it's a hand held thing that i believe works by sending an electric current to the skin. i dont have any personal experience with it, but the before and after pics of various body parts she gave me showed pretty dramatic skin tightening. i'm going to try it myself.

thanks princessdiamond. sorry i missed the part where you said your life revolves around food and you miss the old days.  i used to obsess about food too, but i've realised i can let things slip from time to time, as long as i don't go nuts. Moderation and portion size are key. don't beat yourself up if you do slip, and i agree with one of the previous posters, you didn't look that bad before, although you look fantastic now.

i'm close to my goal now - only one or two more kilos (maybe 5lbs) til i reassess. i just want to budge the last bit of tummy fat and slim down my waist/love handle area.

wow - incredible transformation. nice work!

i actually saw the title to this post and thought it was my own - i just posted before and after pics of myself in this forum. believe it or not, i also used to have black hair when i was heavier, except mine was hideously unkempt and devoid of style. there must be something about weight loss that makes a girl wanna go blonde. not to mention buying clothes, lingerie, beauty treatments etc. i am also currently 116lbs, or just under, though i am a bit shorter than you.

aww thanks mykanosdelight - such a compliment!

i didn't really think the before and after pics captured the transformation that well. i couldn't find many potential before shots, as i used to avoid the camera, or delete photos where i looked fat! and the change in my face is hard to see, given i blurred the before photos. the main thing is, i know my body has changed, and it's been a great confidence boost.

thanks guys! i did stray for a little while, and paid the price by gaining a little. but i got back into counting and this time losing has been easier.

i posted one more horribly unflattering before photo.
Weight Loss The Truth about "Starvation Mode" Feb 15 2008
18:10 (UTC)

Are you sure it's half the BMR (basal metabolic rate) or the resting metabolic rate?

I haven't read up on it for a while so i could well be wrong, but from what i remember, you BMR is only the calories required to keep you alive, presuming you slept all day. If you are awake at all, even sedentary, you must multiply your BMR by 1.3 to get your RMR. This being a higher amount, could mean you might enter starvation mode earlier; at a higher calorie intake.

Weight Loss Hourglass or Pear? Jan 31 2008

Thanks janeiro.

I like to think I'm an hourglass, but according to the traditional bust-waist-hip method, I am very much a pear: bust 32.6, waist 26.4,  hips 36.2. I think my shoulders balance me out.
Weight Loss Hourglass or Pear? Jan 31 2008

I think the hourglass look is partly dependant upon the width of shoulders, rather than bust alone. Someone with a big bust but narrow shoulders might appear more pear shaped than someone with a small bust and wider shoulders.

After all, it's the view from the front (or back), not the profile view, that resembles an hourglass.
Weight Loss How the atkins diet REALLY works Mar 31 2007

The atkins diet has been condemned by every nearly every major health organisation throughout the world. Didn't Atkins end up dieing from a heart attack?

Besides, studies have shown low carb diets are really just low calorie diets in disguise. by eliminating an entire food group, people lower their calories consumed without realizing it and that's how they lose weight. It's physically impossible to lose weight unless there is a deficit between calories consumed and calories burned.

I read through the entire http://www.atkinsexposed.org/ website and it's very interesting.
