Things like granola bars and cereal may seem healthy, but when you turn them over and look at the nutritional information you're be surprised to see how little nutrition they provide. Most of the calories coming from sugars, and any vitamins they have are often added into them (ie: the actual grain does not supply much nutrition)

Don't be fooled by marketing gimmicks.

Ideally the food you eat should not even have an ingredient list.

Ok! But then what constitutes something as a "junk food"?

When it contains very little nutrition for the calories that it supplies.

Example: soda is very high in calories, but contains no nutritional value whatsoever

On the other hand, salmon is high in calories but is full of essential fatty acids, minerals, fat soluble vitamins and protein.

Eat as close to nature as possible. The less food looks like the real thing, and the more ingredients on the label, the LESS healthy it is for you.

Eggs, meat, chicken, fish, vegetables, fruit, olive and coconut oil, nuts, seeds, and  roots (ie potatos, turnips, parsnips, etc) should be your main focus.

Shop the parameter of the store, and only venture down the isles for things like olive oil, canned fish, and nuts/seeds.

Breads, cookies, pasta, sweetened yogurts, soda, candy, cakes, granola, cereal...etc. are all very processed and should not be a regular part of your diet.

Carbs are in everything! Read your labels before eating and check serving sizes.

No they're not.... not in real foods anyways.

If your food has a label, that's where your problem is.

Im struggling to find foods I can eat for lunch at work that doesnt involve sandwiches and gives me energy. i go flat very quickly. or is it ok to have that so long as I dont have carbs in the evening. at the moment Im having a wrap with salad and prawns in them.

This is the result of carb dependency. It's not normal to need to eat every few hours to stabilize blood sugars.

My favorite go to lunches are:

- canned wild salmon (6oz) with 1/2-1 whole avocado on top of mixed greens + veggies

- chicken or turkey breast strips with mustard and avocado wrapped in lettuce leaves + veggies

- 3-4 hard boiled eggs mixed with tomato, cucumber, red onion, and diced olives

- a burger (no bun) made from grass-fed beef, bison, elk or lamb (or other properly sourced meat) wrapped in lettuce

- sardines and olive oil with mixed greens + veggies

- "protein cake or bread" -- my recipe changes everyday, but here's a good base: http://www.smoothiegirleatstoo.com/2010/11/mo ist-low-calorie-microwave-protein-fudge-muffi ns/ I like to double the recipe and top with coconut oil, or make a plain version and use it as a "bun"

- tuna salad (made with avocado and mustard instead of mayo) on top of the plain version of the recipe above (as a bun)

- egg mcmuffins (poach a couple eggs and use the above recipe as a bun) add salsa, spinach, avocado...etc.

- tuna salad on spinach with diced apples, pecans, olive oil and dijon mustard

...most of me meals are pretty basic. If I don't have time to prep anything my cop-out is usually canned salmon, sardines or tuna with salad and/or veggies with a healthy fat source (usually avocado, olive oil or coconut). If I need some extra carbs I'll grab some fruit.

It's very crumbly and needs to be mixed with other types of flours.

It's not at all even close to wheat flour, so don't expect the same doughy-ness that regular flour gives.

Lol Carmen are you actually suggesting the op ditches her friends? Some of the stuff you say is seriously irritating

and the stuff you say isn't?

I'm not saying never speak to your friends again, but there's no harm in branching out and meeting new people. I've lost touch with a lot of friends from highschool because they turned into complete "bar stars" and need to drink all the time. I don't like being around people like that.

There's nothing wrong about drinking once in a while, but if that's all your friends ever want to do, or if it's the only way they know how to have "fun", then there is a problem there.

Maybe you should consider getting friends that have similar interests.

One of the reasons me and my boyfriend get along so well is because neither of us drink.

Any suggestions?

I find protein fills me up well for breakfast. I used to have 2 eggs every morning with breakfast. A total calorie count of 350. It'd keep me full until lunch easily. But then I started to slow weight loss and realised my daily fat intake was really high, but cutting out the eggs meant it was a much healthier level.

I now have 150g low fat cottage cheese as my breakfast protein (along with other things). Great, but less calories than eggs and slightly less protein. So now my breakfast is 250kcal and doesn't leave me so full.

Any suggestions for both sweet and savoury protein rich foods that I could add to my breakfast?

And here's the difficult bit.... Something that isn't meat! Mainly for cost reasons, if I see lean meat on a good offer I buy it and add it to breakfast of course!

HAH! No sweetie, I guarantee it wasn't the eggs or fat.

I eat 3-4 eggs per day, and my fat intake is usually around 85-100 grams per day. I maintain a BF% around 10-12% or so. I've had no problems cutting body fat by increasing fat intake.
