Weight Loss What does a skinny apple shape woman look like? Mar 02 2009

From what I've gathered from fitting clothing, someone with broad shoulders and a full bust in comparison to everything below would be an inverted triangle.  I think of apples as tending to be larger in the middle--that's me.  My waist is porportionately larger than everything else, even when I weigh less.  When I'm in my supposed "ideal" weight range (which hasn't happened in quite a while) my arms and legs are thin, my shoulders are narrow, and fitting my waist in clothing while fitting everything else is difficult--I just don't curve in that much in the middle.  I do have a high, round behind at any weight--that's my one genetic advantage.  *g*  But I tend to gain first in the belly, and I seem to lose it there last.  It's always an issue, especially since belly fat is the most dangerous to one's health, apparently.

The Lounge anyone know anything about alcoholism? Dec 22 2007

All hospitals have foundation money he can apply for to pay his medical bills, if he doesn't have insurance.  They don't advertise this, and you have to ask for the info and the forms, but they all have it and must provide it.  He can't be refused treatment for inability to pay, and he most likely will need medical help.

There's no reason to wait to contact Al-Anon; I'm not sure what you mean by "blows over", but you and your sister would benefit from the help now, while he's in crisis.   The sooner, the better.  Please take care of yourself.  *hugs*

It sounds like your dad might need to be hospitalized.  For him to quit drinking cold-turkey with these symptoms could be dangerous for him; he needs a doctor's supervision.  Depending on what you find out tomorrow, you might want to get in touch with his regular doctor.  If he's self-harming, then a psych-eval might be in order; you could talk to a community counseling center about steps to safeguard his safety, what you can legally do and what you can't.  It's tough when it's an adult, and drunkenness without any other evidence of intent to self-harm also limits what can be done without his consent.

If he's not working, how is he living?  Is his girlfriend supporting him while he drinks himself to death?  If so, she's enabling him, and that needs to end.  If he's made responsible for his own well-being, it may provide him with the motivation to pull himself together.

He's going to need outside help from professionals, medical and psychological, that you and your sister can't provide.  Keep in mind that you can't fix him, it's not possible.  He has to fix himself.  You're not responsible for him, and you can't make him do anything he doesn't want to do, unless he's actively suicidal and can be confined for short-term protection/observation in a psychiatric facility (but going on a bender isn't usually grounds for that.)  You are helpless in this, in that sense.  But you can take care of yourselves, and that you absolutely should do.  Contact Al-Anon to find support for yourself and your sister.  This is going to be hard, but you can manage it and be okay.  A lot of us have.

I've been eating Blue Bunny's low-carb (3g), probiotic yogurt in vanilla with my daily cinnamon, or in raspberry with frozen mixed berries in a smoothie.  Yum!  90 cals, but low sugar/carbs.

With walking, I used to think it was speed that mattered, but I've since learned that it's duration; the longer you walk, the better.  Walk at a speed that you can comfortably maintain for half an hour, then increase time, rather than speed.  An About.com article says that, from 2.5 mph to 4 mph, calories burned per hour actually go down because your momentum carries you forward and you don't have to work as hard for each step.  Once you hit 4-4.5 mph (which is power walking, for me), effort increases again and k/hr burned goes back up.  Walk for an hour and burn those cals!  I've also found that a day spent Christmas shopping burns quite a few calories.  :)

Happens to me, too--restaurant food is loaded with salt, and sometimes MSG as well.  I tend to stop losing weight for a while after eating out, until I've lost the water I retained because of it.

If I could get back the years I lost feeling out of place in my husband's family...I'd have a lot of years.  *g*  So, you feel there's competition.  For what?  Seriously, what are you competing for?  If you "win", what do you get?  Would it be something you want?  Do you even know?  Do you actually like these people enough to want a big piece of their hearts?  What would you do with it, if you got it?

I promise you, no one's going to vote you off the island.  *g*  The problem with a family that's fairly tightly knit is that it may take you a generation to feel like/be considered part of it, but, over time, everyone finds their place, settles in, and gains confidence in the process.  I would always tell myself, too, that I wasn't there with those people for my own sake; really, had they not been my husband's family, I'd never have had a reason to have anything to do with them and may not have ever wanted to.  (His large, extended family, I mean; his parents are/were good people.)  I'd say to myself, "I'm not here for myself, I'm here for him," and I stopped expecting to enjoy myself in these people's presence.  I'd take along some cross-stitch, or even take a nap, or sit and stare aimlessly unless someone approached me and spoke to me.  I stopped sweating it.  And nothing bad happened because of that.

What amazes me now is how, now that I don't care, now that I'm so confident in myself that very few people's opinions matter to me, it's all so much easier.  I'm comfortable with them, and they're comfortable with me.  And my husband and I are still together, after over 20 years.  What was I afraid of?  Not being the best beloved little girl in the world?  So what?  Never actually hurt me in any way not to be, you know?  It's not worth losing sleep or hair over.  And, really, I doubt that anyone ever gave me that much thought, to begin with.  Everyone is always so wrapped up in themselves.

Take a book or a needlework project with you and ride it out for your man's sake.  Maybe even let yourself become the "eccentric" one.  That can actually inhibit people from trying to mess with you.  *g*  Don't be worried, and don't be timid; just be yourself.  You can't MAKE anyone love you, and you don't have to.  It'll be fine.

"I'm going to have to log this...."  *g*  That's really effective for me.

I also think about my bloodwork numbers.  Would I rather be overweight, sick and soon dead, or thinner, healthier and alive?  In other words, cake, or death?  *g*

There are number of members here who can give you good advice on eating and working out to gain muscle.  You probably do need to put on some fat in order to be healthy, but you can add muscle at the same time.  It would probably be a good idea for you to move away from your "safe" foods and into more calorie-dense foods like nuts, peanut butter, avocados, etc.  There have been a number of threads from others who want to gain but feel like they're already eating a lot of food; the trick is to make each bite as (nutritiously) calorie-packed as possible, which means fewer lean foods.  There are also a number of threads from people dealing with the feelings they're experiencing as they work to gain weight; use the "search" feature for forums to locate those threads.

You're not alone; there are plenty of people on the site who are going through what you are, and they'll help you.  Don't forget to use the keyword search to see what's already been submitted that might be useful info for you.  Hang in there; you're on the right track.  *hugs*

New Members The siren song of chinese food. Dec 15 2007

The last time I ate Chinese food, a few weeks ago, it was at a buffet.  I ate a plate of veggie salad, then I took a few bites of five or six different Chinese dishes--literally only a couple of bites of each.  I logged what I ate as accurately as I could and found I didn't go overboard, at all, actually stayed within my dinner limit.  But then I didn't lose any weight for a week.  Was it all the salt and MSG in the Chinese food?  I'm losing normally, again, but I don't think I'll eat any more for quite a while.

It's hard to track one's progress and know what's worked if one doesn't have access to all the data.  I can see my weight loss history and pull up my diet history but I have no burn history available, so I don't have all the info available to me.  Why not?  Wouldn't it make sense?

Foods Slim fast vs. Milk Dec 15 2007

I drink SlimFast every day, but I drink the low-carb version, which is much, much better in terms of sugar and carbs than the other types.  It's actually better than milk for me, too--I'm diabetic, and it has less sugar (lactose) than milk does.  And I've never been healthier since I started drinking them; its easier for my body to assimilate the nutrients in liquid than in pill form, and my immune deficiency is much improved since boosting my nutrition this way.  So I'm definitely an advocate for SlimFast, but only the low-carb type.

SlimFast low-carb has guar gum, which is a soluble fiber that's used in a lot of things.  You can buy it for cooking and add it to food to up the fiber content as well as thicken gravies, etc.  The low-carb SlimFast fills me up well.  I don't know if the other versions have this; when I've tried them (the Optima, for instance, which, blech) they haven't seemed as thick or filling.  Try the low-carb if you're using another version and you don't feel full after drinking.  I easily go several hours after drinking one without hunger.

I'm entirely against "diet aids", I don't trust them and don't believe they're safe or effective.  Green tea is supposed to be both helpful and healthy; you might try drinking a couple of cups of unsweetened green tea per day and see how you feel.

I knew an older woman, years ago, who swore by 1 tbsp of ACV and honey per day.  It's a "tonic" that's been used for many years; older people seem to know about it.  Lately I've heard of using it for alkalizing the system for over-all health; research on that use goes back decades, and I read one interesting article on it published in the '30s.  I was surprised to hear it's being promoted for fat burning, now; I have no idea what support that has in any sort of research, or if there's been any research done.  Do you?
