OH yeah, as far as dieting, I am trying to cut my portion sizes down by using smaller plates, and cutting out sugar and white flour.

I have a Sherpani Rumba that I got off of ebay that I use to carry him in.  I looked at the ergo's but it would have been too difficult to load him on my back by myself, and he is getting  too heavy to carry on my front any more.

As far as excercise equipment, I think I got a solution for now.  I went to a sports store and bout a bike converter thingy.  It converts my regular bike into a stationary bike.  Now I can use my bike daily!  It was on clearance which is always nice, and lots less expensive than a treadmill!  I used it for 5 minutes then my son decided that he was done eating dinner and I had to get him up.  Ah, to be a parent.  But in that five minutes I worked up a small sweat!

Thanks for all your advice.

Hey thank you!  Yes, I do take my son for hikes on the weekends, when I have time and the weather is nice.  I carry him in a backpack carrier.  Problem is, the weather is still not very good, pretty cool, and if it is really any colder than 50 deg, then  no matter how bundled up I have my boy back there, he gets cold.  But as long as he don't get cold, he enjoys riding in the carrier.  He is about 27lbs now, so I can't hike like I used to LOL!

Recipes Wheat Flour in place of all purpose? Apr 15 2011

I've used it to replace up to 1/3 of the flour in a regular recipe without any problems.  Some things I'll replace it entirely but cookies can come out with a very nutty flavor if you do this.

I've done quite a bit of experimenting with baking and beans.  Black beans make terrific brownies.  In cake mixes use a can of white or black beans and 1 cup of water pureed together, it comes out great.

I recently tried cookies with white pinto beans instead of butter, they tasted good, but not quite as good.  I also tried some with coconut butter and they were fantastic so next time I'll try half of each.

Whole wheat flour tends to make baked goods heavier.  However, I used a recipe this morning for whole wheat buscuits and was very impressed.  It was made exactly like regular buscuits except of course whole wheat instead of white, and it used baking power AND baking soda.  Regular buscuits only use baking powder.  I could hardly tell the difference.  I am thinking that may be the trick, use some soda as well as powder when using whole wheat to give it some extra lift.

As far as black bean brownies, I made some and wasn't impressed, they were wierd.  I personally didn't like them.  I may have did something wrong though?

However, I did find a recipe online for flax seed muffins that were really really good.  That is a  new staple at my place, love to have  a couple with breakfast every morning.

Some great tips here, I really like this one.

I also have switched to just having water with my meal rather then  milk or juice.

One thing I have to learn is eating slowly.  I tend to be a speed eater and it is a habit I need to break.

What a great article.  I really enjoyed reading that.  I did notice that the 2 meals a day he eats are breakfast and lunch, no dinner.  That may have something to do with being skinny right there.  I hear things about not eating a big meal before bed, and the biggest meal of the day should be breakfast.

I also totally agree with what he says that if you retire early you will probably die early, from what I have seen with aging family members, that is generally true.

Sad that they guy never had any kids.

He also blows the whole "longevity is a genetic trait" theory.  His mother died at 47 and father died at 50....  I always believed that I am going to die in my 60's or 70's one day because my family dies at that age, maybe that isn't true?

And he got a physical TWICE a year.  When was the last time you had a physical?  The guy had some great advice.

stop eating sugar, i use to eat ice cream but once i had started keep going back to the freezer for more. i felt like i completely lost control.

for the past few months i have stopped eating all sugar, ice cream, lollies, biscuits, chocolate, anything that is processed and sugar added.

Now i don't even crave it anymore. i think sugar is addictive

 This is 100% correct!!!!!

If there was a CA (carbohydrate annonomous) club, I would be a memeber.

Hi, my name is Chris, and I am a carbohydrate addict....

I tried the "carb addict diet" and am failing misserably.  It read up nice, to break the addiction eat three meals a day, two low on carbs, the third is a 1/3 carbs, 1/3 protein, 1/3 veggies.  I do okay for about 3 to 4 days, then I binge on carbs.   I am wondering if I am restricting my carbs too much and that is why I binge?  Last night I binged on carbs, then I get so made at  myself!  I have NO idea how to break the addiction.  I feel your pain.

Weight Loss opinions please: becoming vegetarian Apr 12 2011

I was vegan for a long time, loved it really.  But I gained weight on that diet.  I was vegan for ethical reasons more so than anything else.  I went back to eating meat for convienience.  I am a single  mother and I work full time at a very stressful job....need I say more????

But congrats if you want to be vegetarian!  Meat is hard on the body, hard on the environment, and hard on the animals that are killed for it.

I think the mistake I made was I used carbs to fill the gap, and I am a bit of a carb addict, meaning when I start eating carbs, I have a hard time stopping.

My suggestion, eat a lot of tofu and seitan.  I love both.  Tempeh is pretty good once you figure out how to make it and get your taste buds used it it.  To this day I still prefer tempeh bacon over regular bacon.  I can't stand pork bacon, it is just nasty to me, and tempeh bacon  is oh oh oh so yummy!!!

Sauted tofu and marinated baked tofu is totally awesome too, my 2 year old son LOVES tofu.  We still eat a lot of tofu.

Congrats, and if you have any questions or need any recipes, let me know, I loved being vegan and even though I am not  one anymore, I have tons of free advice if you want it.

I am not really counting calories.  I tried that a few times, and I am WAY too lazy for that!  It lasted a day, got so tedious that I quit.  I am not counting grams either.  According to the book, it is just eyeballing.

Three meals per day, two of them are pretty much zero carb, 1/2 veggies, 1/2 protein, then the third meal is a "reward meal" where it is 1/3 veggies, 1/3 protien, 1/3 carbs + a salad.  Any carbs you want as long as it is eaten in proportion to the other things, 1/3 of each.  No measuring, no counting, just eyeballing.  If I have to measure or count anything I won't stick to it.

This diet is great because I am eating WAY less carbs then I was before, I don't go hungry, and I am eating WAY more veggies.  Before my diet was like 3/4 carbs (breakfast was usually 100% carbs) with each meal.

This is why I think I can actually stick with this diet, it is easier, and it is something I could stick with for the rest of my life, it is just changing a habit.

The theory is that if you are addicted to carbs (as I was!) then when you eat carbs you over eat habitually because the carbs make you do that, well they did me at least.  When every I ate carbs I would stuff myself beyond being full.  But when you limit your carbs to just one meal a day, and then only a limited amount and take in equal portions of veggies and protein it prevents insulin spike and the body stops needed a carb fix, and stops binge carb eating.  So far, the books seems to be dead on, because I find that I eat a lot less when I don't eat carbs, or only a limited amount of them.  I also don't seem to crave them anymore.  Now I feel full and happy just eating some green beans and fish, or something of the nature.  And I eat maybe half of what I ate before and get full, and when I do get full, I stop eating with no desire to eat anything else.

It is creepy how dead on accurate this book has been for me so far, like they know me personally.

Oh thank you!

Yes, I am wanting to loose weight, and I hope that that comes in time, but at first my main goal is to break my carbohydrate addiction.  I was one of those people who would eat two HUGE plates of pasta, be uncomfortably full, then I would have an insane sweet craving and scarf down about four to six cookies, or a big bowl of ice cream.

And when I start to eat sweets, pasta, bread, etc I can't bring myself to stop unless I am so full that I feel like I am going to pop.

I had a physical done not long ago and it showed that I am pre-diabetic, which was a real eye opener.  Basically, it occured to me that my diet is killing me, and if I don't do something now, I will have dire consequences in the future (such as type I diabeties)!

For now I am avoiding even fruit, but I think after a couple of weeks I will be able to eat fruit again.

But I figure that because I have already done so much damage to my body, I probably will never again be able to eat pasta, potatos, breads and sweets which is so sad because I LOVE those foods.  I sure hope I am doing the right thing, I do NOT want to get diabetes.

I think a good way to think of amino acids in proteins is like thinking of ink cartridges in printers.  Each protein that we need is a different ink cartridge.  Each of us use some proteins more then others but we do use all of them but not all at the same rate.

I can't remember all the amino acids we need but to simplfy I am going to generalize.  Say we need 3 amino acids to make a complete protein.  (we need something like 18, but I am just simplifying).  x,y,z.

You have level indicators of x, y, z.  You eat beans which are high in x.  So after that meal, x level catridge fills up to 100%, but y and z stay where they were, say at 75%.  Next day you eat rice which is hight in y.  So then your level indicators are now at x= 75%, y=100%, and z=50% (assuming that you use 25% of x, y and z a day).  The next day you eat some whole wheat bread, which is high in z.  Then you stand at x=50%, y=75%, z=100%...get it?

So you do not need all your amino acids with every meal every day.  just eat a varied diet and you will be okay.  It really is not all that complicated.

I had a nickel for everytime someone told me that I'd die without meat. I'd have, like...$1.80.

Oh  no doubt!!!  I get so sick of that! I think I would have like...a zillion dollars.

And religious fanatics who say that animals were put here by God for human consumption!

Oh PUUULLLEEEZZZZE.

And how about, vegetarians can eat fish because fish isn't meat?  I HATE that one too, hear it constantly from PESCATARIANS who call themselve "vegetarians".  FISH IS MEAT!  But according to the Webster dictionary, meat is the "flesh of an animal consumed as food, excluding poultry and fish" WFT?  Why exclude poultry and fish?  I just don't get that one!

And as far as the gift, I think if you have leather from before you became vegetarain it is okay.  I have a leather wallet that I have been using for like 10 or more  YEARS.  Stupid thing won't wear out, I swear!  I remember buying it at a leather store when I was like 18 or so (I am 32 now)...Geeze, that was a LONG time ago...but I still use it.  Don't see any need to replace it now just because I am vegetarian.  I think not eating meat has a far greater impact on saving the lives of animals then buying leather products.

Be prepared to do a lot of cooking.  I have to pack my son's lunch everyday for daycare.  They have "vegetarian" options but that is veggie burger and grilled cheese, NOT what I would consider healthy.  So I pack my son's lunch everyday.  To make it easier it is leftovers from the previous nights dinner most days, works pretty well, but at first it was kind of hard to get used to it.

Also you have to be flexible.  Workers make mistakes, son will eat other kids foods, etc.  So it is next to impossible to be hard core unless you are a SAHM.

Good luck!

I think starting slow is the best way to do it.  Want a reason, how about the environment?  Just give up beef and you can really do a lot to help the environment, even if you still eat all other forms of meat (pork, poultry, fish).  Here is why:

 http://www.fao.org/ag/magazine/0612sp1.htm

If you want animal compasion to be  your reason (as is my reason) then you can't eat any meat because cattle, pigs, chickens, turkey, etc. are treated HORRIBLY!!!!

Watch "meet  your meat"...but don't if you have a sensitive stomach, that video made  me go vegan.  Now I am not vegan (I eat cheese on my pizza about once a week so I am lacto vegetarian, though I don't eat eggs), but I refuse to ever again to eat meat!  I will not be responsible for that torture!

Okay, I loved Austin Powers 2, and all the Shrek movies were great, and I love Monty Python (actually the skit about the black knight who gets dismembered and the killer rabbit in the Holy Grail bothered me, it wasn't funny at all but the 3 headed argumentive guy, and the Knights who say "nee" was funny as all heck, the best is the frech guy guarding the castle who says "I will fart in your general direction", love that guy!), but I love slapstick.

What I DON'T find funny is things where it shows someone getting hurt like in "funniest home videos".  I mean, yeah, that person may be an idiot, but even idiots can feel pain and there is nothing funny about getting hurt.  The audience would be laughing at a guy who is skateboarding on a rail, falls and knocks between his legs on the rail and the audience is rolling in laughter and I am sitting there thinking, boy I sure hope that guy is okay!

I guess I am too much of a softie.

Vegweb is where I get 90% of all the recipes that I make.

I highly suggest the Chana Masala recipe and add some coconut milk and serve it with rice...OMG, the best!  I had it for dinner last night, and had steamed green beans on the side.  (if you do make this, note that the tbsp of curry is a bit much, I usually only put a tsp and it is great)

What is funny is I eat probably 80% vegan, two meals a week have cheese (quesadillas and  pizza) so I am technically a lacto-vegetarian.  I rarely eat soup or salad as I am  not crazy for either.

Chana Masala is super cheap which is part of the reason I make it a lot, if you want any more suggestions, let me know.

Also Humans as we know them (Homo Sapien) that populated the planet as we know it today was done believe it or not during an ice age and we've adapted 3 systems within our body to produce glucose for survival, and it's the reason why carbs aren't an essential nutrient by todays standards, and why humans have not only survived but thrived.

Now I admit, I may not know much about this stuff, but I was under the impression that we could not survive on a diet totally devoid of carbs. I learned in my neurology class that carbs is the primary source of fuel for our brains hence why people on a strict Atkins diet have problems (mood swings for example).

What are those three systems?

I use a rice cooker with a steamer basket type of thing, I LOVE LOVE it!!!  I make a ton of tofu stirfrys now, so easy.  I make rice and steamed veggies at the same time, just turn it on over there, and all I have to worry about is cooking the tofu.  Easy peasy.  I must use my rice cooker - steamer at least 3 times a week, seriously!

I also make beans and rice.  I make beans in the crock pot whilel I am at work, then make rice and steamed veggies and add some beans for easy beans and rice.

If I make lentils and rice I just put the rice and lentils together in the cooker and steam veggies on top...all kinds of awesome things to do.

Cheesy rice with veggies, make veggies and rice in the cooker, then when it is done add a can of cream of asparagus soup and a bag of shredded cheddar cheese to the hot rice and mix up real good...awesome...one of my son's favorite meals!

I think this one is it, if not it looks identical.
