Weight Loss Does not chewing your food cut calories??? Nov 10 2010

I am, by no means, an expert, but if the process of digestion is considered, then this doesn't make any sense at all.  Regardless of how many times food is chewed (corn kernals and a few other foods aside) the body digests it.  The stomach will mix it with acid and mush it up to a fairly unified consistency and since we have many feet of intestines, the body will absorb the same amount of nutrients and calories from the food that is eaten.   Back to the basic - calories in - calories burned.

My husband was reluctant, at first, to neuter our male German Shepherds, but he went to the vet with me and the vet talked directly to my husband - my husband then was the one who made sure that we set up the appointments.  The benefits definitely outweigh any risks or concerns.  It's never too late.  Good luck and enjoy your dog!

I think you should have to vote - there should be a fine for not voting - but...there should be an option for "None of the Above" on the ballot.  I think that would be more of a wake up call to politicians than apathy.

Nevada has this option, and I like the idea in principle, but what happens in the event that "NOTA" wins (unlikely in NV, but hypothetically) is that the candidate with the most or plurality of votes still wins.

A "NOTA" vote essentially just whittles down the voting pool without really doing anything to oust the poor choices available.  In NV, with NOTA only polling at less than 10%, I'm not sure how much of a message it sends either.

That's very interesting!  I wonder if there was a fine for not voting and you got over 80%of people voting...what the results would be?  Not sure about what to do if NOTA won....never thought about that!  Great point!

With the way society is, someone would change their name to "None of the Above" and win many posts!

But, I do agree with making voting more mandatory.  Apathy does no one any good.  Besides, voting is a great privilege.  It's worth the relatively small amount of time reviewing the candidates and issues and getting out there and voting, made easier than ever by the availability of absentee or mail-in ballots.

I know a lot of people name their dogs "people names" but I have never understood that - so, I would suggest something more 'dog like'.  Won Ton is good.  But, you can be so creative - maybe wait a few days and see if an idea based on personality comes to light.

I have that feeling too - it's kind of an odd feeling, but now when I feel it I know that I've gotten some good exercise.  I didn't know anybody else had it because when I've asked a few people, they didn't have a clue what I meant.   I don't think it's bad, I like karmin's idea!

Foods Water Substitute Aug 27 2010

Like the previous responder, there is no substitute.

Unsweetened teas might be a good beverage, hot or cold.

Try sipping it ice cold with lemon or other citris fruit juice squeezed in.  Or maybe a splash of other fruit juice.

My hubby really didn't used to 'like' water either, but he likes it more and more especially after educating himself on other beverages.

Weight Loss I dread restaurants Aug 27 2010

Restaurants can be challenging, but there are ways to make it a positive experience.  Restaurants want to please you, their customer, so do not hesitate to ask questions or be specific about how you want your selections to be served.  For instance, specify wheat bread or toast and specify 'dry' toast.  Ask for egg whites or egg beaters to be substituted, ask for steamed veggies, etc.  The suggestion to eat only 1/2 is wonderful, then if you choose to take it with you, you have another meal to enjoy later!  Remember, salads are not always  the healthiest options.  Look online at their menu ahead of time to check nutrition and make your selection.   Have fun too, that's the best part of going out.

Very interesting, all of the different answers.

Beets has to be the one thing that I cannot get used to.  Pickled or not, I just can't do it.

I understand the overripe bananas, although when they are just barely turned yellow, I like them.  Imitation banana flavor (or imitation peach flavor for that matter) are not something I enjoy.

I didn't used to like squash, but there are so many different kinds, and ways of cooking, so I do like most of them now.

At least there is enough food variety that none of us HAVE to eat the gross ones!

I'm 5"1" and started at 151.5 almost 3 years ago.  I am now at 125, been maintaining for a little over a year.  You can do this!  Remember, it took a while to put on the pounds, so it should take a while to lose them too.  Make small changes that you can stick with.  And attitude makes it all possible.  We are small people, we don't eat much! (That's the mantra that worked for me.)

A situation like that is difficult at best, especially since there are 2 homes for this little girl.  I wish you the best.  I don't have too much advice as I don't have experience with overweight youngsters, but the part about 'working out' with her just seemed to sound odd, at least to me.  Even now I hate that phrase and if I had heard it as a kid it would have sounded like work and boring.  So, instead of 'working out'.  Go play!  Have fun.  Play tag.  Watch her ride her bike!  Play hopscotch or jumprope to the silly ditties that little girls love so much.  Dance to her favorite music.  Etc.  And don't harp on the food.  Offer only healthy stuff.  Maybe don't put the food on the table, that way taking seconds won't be so easy.  Hope things go well!

I am hoping the Cowboys will win!  But, it's only because I am NOT a Packers fan.  It should be a great game, too bad I don't get NFL network and I am not able to go to a sports bar.  Oh well.

#4 angiethe1_2005 Nov 29 2007 10:15 I watched on a show one time that its estimated we eat approximatly 7 spiders pr yr in our sleep. so that one you killed might mean one less bugger to eat!

OK, so if that's the case - how many calories are in a spider?  And because the average is 7/year, should I log one every 52 days?  Hmmm?

I usually catch and release spiders, unless they are on a dead run, then I smoosh them.  I love that spiders take care of other bugs and will leave them alone if they are outside.

All the time!

Yesterday we had a mandatory meeting where there were pastries of all sorts provided.  Last Friday we had a meeting, again with pastries, and also with lunch that included onion rings and deep fried apple crisp bites and deep fried brownie bites.  We also have an ice cream cooler here with free novelties that is always stocked.  I have learned to ignore those things.  But, it's very difficult.  I make sure and bring my healthy snacks so that I'm not famished and tempted.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
