Fitness What's your thoughts on drinking a Gallon of Water a day. Jul 18 2012

A healthy choice is that your body needs about half of your weight in water ounces. For example, if you weigh in at 160 lbs, you need 80 fluid ounces daily. That is for regular water consumption, not counting when you exercise etc, in which case you will need even more.

Don't wait until you feel thirsty, as by that time you have already started to dehydrate. A lot of people tell me, they forget to drink the customary 8 glasses of water a day. My advice is to set a small timer to one hour and then drink a full glass, - voila, you got your 8 glasses without any problems.

By the way, tea, coffee, sodas, etc, do not count towards your daily  water requirements, as a matter of fact anything containing caffeine works a a diuretic and you need to up your water consumption by double the amount of your caffeinated drink.

At least, that is what I read in a medical journal. So there ya go!

Foods Eggs-- Yay or Nay? Jun 27 2012

A while back I actually had asked my M.D. about eating eggs, including the yolk. She told me that according to the most recent research egg yolks had gotten a bad rep and she said, I could eat an egg a day and it would not harm me, but rather be good for my health. When I do eat eggs, especially in an omelet with some spinach and mushrooms, I scramble one whole egg and two whites. That way I got all of the nutrition from one yolk and not to much cholesterol. Regardless of what the research shows, I still think one yolk a day is plenty for me!

Foods Does anyone eat Quinoa or Chia seeds? Jun 20 2012

I've been cooking quinoa for many years. One mistake many people make is not washing the seeds really well before cooking them. It is a whole food, that is high in vitamins and nutrients such as riboflavin, calcium, vitamin Em Iron, Potassium, etc. It is very high in protein (24g in 1 cup of regular uncooked quinoa.)

Quinoa seeds (often referred to as "grains") are available in red, black, white and golden colors. What I personally like, is that you can cook it for breakfast, it goes well with cinnamon and a little cream as a cereal; or, you can cook it in chicken broth and serve it as the starch at dinner. I have made pilaf with is as well as casseroles. There is a book out by Patricia Green & Carolyn Hemming, "Quinoa the everyday super-food 365" that is available at Amazon and has some great recipes in it, in case you get bored with the same old stuff.

I have also tried Chia seeds which are a good antioxidant food, but I don't like the way the little seeds stick in between my teeth. So, Quinoa it is for me. By the way, both are available at Costco and quite reasonably priced.

I am not happy with this, when I punch in a recipe with grams, it does not seem to recognize it with some, but with others. Then I change it to ounces and it still does not recognize the weight, never mind the ingredients. I don't do strange items, but when I go to grams and then it gives me an error message, I mean, what good is it?

Tried to read "Recipes from the Dump," what a total waste of my time! Nothing to do with actual recipes, wish I had not bought it!!

Great idea to have a book forum, I might get more ideas of what to read next!  There are three books I am currently reading, all completely different from each other. I just finished "The Concubine's Secret," by Kate Furnival, the third book in the series, it started off a little slow, but once you get into the story, it's quite good, although parts of it are really far-fetched imho. I am also reading the first in a four-book series by Bernard Cornwell, "The Rebel," about the Civil War; he is one of my absolute favorite writers and his books contain a tremendous amount of actual historic events surrounding his stories. And of course, I am reading the "Game of Thrones," which is now supposedly also a TV series. I wouldn't know, I rather just read the books. Sad, but my books are almost like my children, regardless how much you love them, there are days you would rather much like to give them away but just can't do it, LOL.

Foods Sodium...What to do about that sodium... Apr 20 2012

Interesting replies to this topic. Being a retired Chef as well as Culinary Arts Teacher, I am well aware of the excess sodium in most prepackages foods. It seems that anything and everything you purchase these days, except fresh produce, has an excess of sodium in it, whether as a flavor enhancer, or as a preservative. Personally, I try cooking with "no sodium" as well as with "low-sodium" products, and increasing the potassium by eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. I bake all my own breads as the store-bought versions have way to many chemical additions to increase shelf-life. It definitely pays to read labels before purchasing and to compare different brands, as the sodium frequently varies quite a bit.

I did not log anything for yesterday as I had the house full of family with me doing all of the cooking, there simply was no time. But then again, I also know that I went way overboard with my own nibbling.

So this being a Monday, I am NOT going to wait for NYE to make a new resolution that I already know I will break in two days. Instead, I am starting back on track now, after I ate most of the leftovers today, back tomorrow. I know I can do this!

Foods Sodium is always too high help May 20 2011

Since I started on Calories Count, I have tried desperately to get my sodium under control. And truth be told, regardless of what I look for int he stores, EVERYTHING is way too high on sodium. I do not use salt when cooking, and eat a lot of fresh produce, brown rice, whole grains, and still the sodium is daily way over the 1500 mark. So I try to at least limit what has high sodium, rarely eat ham or other processed foods. It's not a really good solution, but in mho better than ignoring it all.

I have no problem with gays and lesbians being able to tie the knot. More power to them.

However, I do have a serious issue with the question, why vote at all? You see, this has really nothing to do with the bible, or Jesus or what they did way back then, and anyway, who cares? I bet they would not care much what we do these days, you think? What it does however tell me is that the majority of the people had voted "no" and it was overturned by a judge. To my way of thinking, so then why vote at all. Regardless of what the issue is, if a judge can overturn it, then were does the right of the people come into play?

Regardless of what the issue is, be this gay rights or abortion or any of the other hotly contested issues, why should I go to vote in the first place? To me, THAT is the ONLY issue we ought to address.

Weight Loss Gained 2.5 lbs in ONE day. Jul 18 2010

Sorry to say, but those meatballs carry about 100 calories each! Plus all that sodium! I could guarantee you that you will "magically lose those unwanted pounds by tomorrow, but it truly is a good idea to just weigh once a week. Weight fluctuates tremendously, depending on when - how late in the day - you ate, what you ate and how much.  I ate a few pickles one evening thinking they were low cal, but weight was way up the next morning, mostly due to the sodium. So relax, tomorrow is another day! Enjoy it!
