Weight Loss Xmas 2010 Challenge! Sep 17 2010

Hi all,

I'm late to check in this week and haven't been around much, but I lost a 1/2 pound.

It has been a heck of a week.  One of our cats has been at the emergency vet since last Friday.  I've been highly stressed about it, and we've been spending a lot of our normally free time visiting her at the vet.  So, I haven't been taking the time to track calories and I haven't worked out (other than walking the dog).  I do, however, think I've been eating good, even though I haven't tracked.  She should be coming home tomorrow and I will get back on track quickly.

flipper - Congratulations on the half marathon!  Woot!

losinglaura - I think it is great to readjust your loss expectations.  Better to go slow and set yourself up to KEEP IT OFF than to go to fast.  I'm adjusting my xmas goal as well.

Welcome to all the new people!

xoxo - Chris

Morning everyone.  Congratulations to everyone that lost this week!  That is awesome!

My weight is exactly the same.  Boo!  I'm not going to get discouraged though.  I worked hard this week, eating well and getting a very good amount of exercise.  I know if I keep it up, it'll come off eventually.

Morning everyone,

Yikes!  My hip joints are little tender from running the last two days in a row.  I think today is going to have to be a rest day, which works well since I have a long work day today.  I'll probably get in a good walk w/ the dog, so that'll be something more low key.  I'm so far out of running condition right now that I haven't been able to complete the first day of the Couch to 5k program.  Sunday I did 3 of the 9 running segments and Monday I did 6 of them.  My lungs are in rough shape!  I'm optimistic that by keeping it up I'll see quick improvement.

Flipper80 - Good luck on your 1/2 this weekend!  Is this your first?  I'm a former runner and aspiring to be a runner again.

I actually find that I have an easier time when treats are easily accessible and I can enjoy them in moderation.  It's when I deprive myself that I find myself wanting to run out for a tub of Ben and Jerry's.

My only issue w/ DH is that he loses 10lbs by just thinking about getting on the treadmill.=)

Another pear shape here.  I have always been bigger on the bottom and it is the first place I gain and the last place I lose.  Sounds like a good group is coming together.

losinglaura - Your check in plan is great; works for me.

I would love to join you!  I'd really like to lose 20lbs by Christmas.  However, my true goal is to work out at least 4 days/week and eat/cook more meals at home.  Honestly, if I can keep to my exercise and eating at home goal, I'll be happy regardless of if I meet the weight goal or not.  It would be really nice though!

That running program looks great.  I'm just starting the Couch to 5k program.  I used to really love running before I gained the weight over the last four years.  I'd really like to get back to it again, so I'm hoping the program will get me started.

I had my first yoga session over the weekend and I only made it through 35 minutes of it!  I don't know that I can do all 90 minutes.  Have you made it through the entire video?

At about the 45 minute mark, the yoga dvd actually takes a turn and moves toward balance and posture poses, which IMO are a bit easier, or at least more relaxing, than the vinyasas.  I've only done the yoga twice, but around the 30 min mark was also where I found myself very worn out.  I did see a pretty significant difference the second time through.

I'm doing the lean too!  I'm on Day 7 and I don't plan to weigh myself for a while, maybe around Day 30.  We'll see how I feel at the time...

Well...I haven't done the program, but I thought I'd bump your post up.

I am doing P90X too and I am on day 7.  Yay, for a rest day!  My calves are screaming from the leg workout I did a couple days ago.  I am following the eating program.  Not the exact meals, but I am using the breakdown of protein/carbs/fats/etc.  Don't feel bad about your cookie!  You can't be perfect all the time.

From what I have read, many people repeat the program or just do it a few days a week to maintain.  The book also describes how to use the dvds to maintain once you've achieved your results.

Good luck!

I have accupuncture regularly, and I think it has made my life so much better.  I started it at the recommendation of my doctor when I was being treated for hypothyroidism and suffering horrible side affects from the traditional medications.  My thyroid problem is now (relatively) under control, but I still like to go to accupuncture a couple times a month.  I get treatment for my allergies through my accupuncturist and I find it helps me keep my energy levels up.  I always go to her for any medical condition before seeing my doctor.  I'm hugely devoted and I'm constantly wanting to scream from the rooftops about how much better my life is w/ accupuncture.

As far as pain, I don't find it painful at all.  In fact, I rarely even feel the needles.  There are just a couple spots where I feel it when she's treating my sinuses, but it is never painful.  I believe that, to a certain degree, discomfort is related to the skill level of the doctor.  I tried a few others when my health insurance changed and each of them had a different level of "feeling."

I've talked to my acupuncturist about weight loss and she doesn't really believe that acupuncture can result in weight loss.  Rather, it is a great tool for keeping your energy level up which helps people keep up w/ exersize and eating properly as a side benefit.  Mine is also a herbalist and she does make a tea that has appetite suppressant qualities.  I used to drink it in the evening to distract me from snacking, but I found that regular tea surved the same purpose pretty well.

Not All Processed Foods Are Created Equal
Fact: a diet containing whole, fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best for a healthy mind and body. Although true, it can be hard to keep food fresh at home for longer periods of time, and if you have no time to shop every few days, boxed and canned foods become appealing. We often hear about heavily processed frozen dinners and processed foods worth avoiding, but there are minimally processed foods that do pack a lot of nutrition and may be worth having in the fridge or cupboard.
