875/1250 - 1 hr spin class and 20 mins pilates on Tues, 1 hr pilates yesterday

@tropicalchic: Good to see you back! :)

And it's great too see so many people expecting to meet or exceed their goals! Yay! :)

@taylordee: You can join anytime but the challenge resets the first of each month. So you've only got 5 more days for this round. If you think you can make 750 for the next week that's great! :)

janie: Hang in there!! Though I haven't usually had period of time longer that 1-2 weeks when things seems to go haywire, I know it's hard to stick to it and stay motivated when times are tough. I love your "not quitting" statement. That's truly the key! We all have bad days and weeks but don't give up! Here's one of my favorite quotes:

"Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'" - Mary Anne Radmacher

No change but I have a reason at least for the quick gain. TOM showed up Friday night. So I probably have another couple days.

735/1250 - 40 min squatting/catching for my daughter's softball pitching practice

Sarah Ann: Very glad to have all the immediate danger/craziness end here in Boston. It was unfortunate to be stuck at home all day on Friday (it was 75 degrees and sunny out - the first truly warm beautiful Spring day!) but I was relatively close to the manhunt action. Not close enough to be searched by swat teams but close enough to hear the sirens and helicopters all day. Trying to return to normal now!

petite_chicago: That's awesome that you're enjoying the running so much! Yay! I know the feeling of finding an exercise you love! :)

695/1250 - 1hr 20 min walk yesterday

Thanks for all the responses and concern! Reporting in this morning from lock down in my Newton home. I live on the Newton/Watertown line. I'm sure I'll be fine, nothing to worry about, but can't leave the house today. I got up and got dressed to go to spin and then turned on the radio. So no spin for me today. I should be good and do some pilates at home instead but it's hard to concentrate.

And sorry I haven't done an update for awhile. Obviously a bit preoccupied with the marathon/manhunt thing. And work's been really busy too!

Good morning all! Reporting in from the Boston/Newton/Watertown lock down area. Got up this morning, put on my spin clothes, turned on the radio and learned I can't leave the house. The shoot out last night took place about a 1.5 mile from my house. So no spin class today but I did weigh myself so here I am.

Not to worried about this. Weighed 154 all week, even yesterday morning, but went out to dinner last night so I think high sodium content is to blame. The food was awesome! All weigh related issues seem unimportant to me this morning. Can't imagine why.

I can see finishing. If you've run 26.2 miles then the last hundred yards are hard to give up.

I'm not disputing the level of crazy it takes to run that far but to turn around and go the other direction when you're that close would seem slightly crazier to me.

i don't doubt that crossing the finish line was the quickest and most sensible way out of that situation. but the fact is, the old guy described this as "finish[ing] the race" not as "leaving the area" or "going to get help."

I can understand him finishing the race. That's the point I was trying to make. Somebody that's set a goal and worked so hard to meet that goal and is then within seconds of achieving that goal made what I think is a rational decision to cross the finish line.

From someone that spent the morning there (but was in the Fenway area when the blast occurred) I'm guessing it wasn't someone trying to help him finish the race. The medical tent is immediately on the other side of the finish line, like 30 yards. The runner may have thought the person was helping him finish the race but most likely they were helping him toward the medical tent.

Weighed myself yesterday morning but then went downtown to meet friends for brunch and watch the marathon! Quite a crazy day. Luckily I/we left Boylston St at 1pm to meet friends getting out of the Red Sox game and were a mile from the explosion when it happened. All my friends and family are safe. Now going thru my email and updating posts here. Seems a little weird but trying to stick to routine.

615/1250 - Here to post my random 20 mins walking yesterday.

@goal_50: Thanks for the concern! I was actually downtown, 1 block from the finish line to see the front runners come in but we left and walked to Fenway (that's my 20 mins posted here) to meet up with friends about 1pm. Lucky accident that our plan to spend the day on Boylston was diverted to meet 4-6 friends getting out of the Red Sox game a mile away got me away. It was still a bit of a challenge to get home with friends living on the other side of the city, trains not running, cabs refusing to go thru the city. Had a friend crash at my place last night and brought her home this morning. All of mine are safe and sound. Pretty upset and heart sick for those that were injured and died.

595/1250 - 55 min spin class

I live in Boston and it's Marathon week here (Boston Marathon's on Monday). I always notice an uptick in discussion about exercise and running in the ramp up to this event every year. This article on NPR caught my attention this morning. The lead in is about a recent study that found that stretching before doing exercise is not helpful and may even be detrimental. What I found more interesting is it's followed by a book excerpt discussing how much exercise a week is "good" for you and how scientist have been trying to quantify how much and what type of exercise we should be doing. It ends with a discussion of how many minutes of exercise you should be doing a week (spoiler: it's based on the type of activity you do) but I thought it relevant to this thread.

Came home from spin class yesterday at 10:30am and realized I hadn't weighed myself, totally forgot. Had already had breakfast and about 6 glasses of water. Got on the scale and it read 157.6. Felt that didn't accurately indicate anything helpful so here I am today instead. Hoped it wouldn't be 157 but I'll admit I'm surprised at 154. Most of the week I was weighing in at 155 or 156 something. I have done better with cutting back on my eating this week though... and the Easter candy is finally gone. Must remember to buy less candy next year. It's good overall to have kids that only eat when they're hungry but bad when you yourself are not the same way and surrounded by sweets for days/weeks.

I love how active everyone is this month! Woo hoo! :)  It's the 10th of the month. We have 30 days this April so that's a 3rd of the way thru.

And walking is never boring efish_sparkles! Walking is one of my favorite things. I love it because I get outside, breath fresh air, hopefully some warm sunshine and my walk takes me along the Charles River. It's beautiful!

runyourlife lost 5.2 lbs & the poster right before me said he lost 9 lbs in 1 week....

runyourlife is not likely lying about it. I've been doing these challenges with her on and off for 2 years now. Mostly it's related to water retention. Your correct about the calories in vs. calories out but there is a bit more to it than that. Here are some examples of how this can happen:

  • Having a high sodium intake for 1 to many days in a row (not matter the number of calories) can cause a quick increase. Conversely cutting your sodium intake and increasing your water intake can cause a quick drop. Example: I went on vacation in Jan. When I left I weighed 154, exercised on vacation but also did vacation eating for 7 days, came back weighed 156. Had 2 days eating about 1500 cals a day, 12 glasses of water a day and weighed in after those 2 days at 151.5. Over the week it was only a 3.5lb loss but to fluctuate 5.5lbs over 2 days seems crazy but it happened. This is also the main reason people lose quickly in the first few weeks of a diet change. They've been eating high fat, high sodium foods and then quickly change their diet cutting all that out and increasing their water intake.
  • TOM - time of month/period. I gain 3-5lbs within 2 days either side of TOM and then drop it just as quickly.
  • Water retention from exercise. Your muscles retain water when you increase your exercise or change up the type of exercise you do. I often get frustrated with weight loss because I'll be doing everything right - keeping my calories lower (1500-2000 depending on exercise), exercising daily, drinking water - and yet the scale isn't moving. Then I'll take off a few days from exercising and often even increase my eating and I'll drop 3-5lbs in those 3 days. Makes me want to scream but it's probably just that given that few days of rest my muscles recovered and released that extra water.

And please note, even runyourlife pointed out that she didn't think it would stick. Most of the time when I've had those quick drops I'll be back up 1-2lbs in a few days. I don't know Joe and don't know what he was doing before this past week or during that week to lose 9lbs but each person is different and many factors are involved. One of the reasons we post twice a week and keep the history the over weeks is that it helps to see the bigger picture.

As already stated, I've been joining up on these challenges with runyourlife for a couple of years now. She doesn't promote or encourage fad diets or drastic lifestyle changes. It's just a place to help you be accountable to yourself and others and get support if you need it.

Whatever you're doing looks like it's working well for you Kari! Definitely need to keep well fed. I'm never go under 1500 calories and on the days I do spin I'm usually closer to 2000 otherwise I'm ravenous.

Ann: sounds like you have a great weekend! Finding a way to enjoy life, which includes food, is a big part of that lifestyle change we're all striving for and it often means there are days when we splurge. Your plan for the week to balance out your weekend is perfect! :)

255/1250 - 55 min spin class

So happy to see so many people joining up!  And petite_chicago, Sarah Ann is correct. Our rules are pretty loose. It's more about striving for and hopefully meeting your goal. If you exceed the 750, you can increase it. I personally think it's better to choose something manageable and exceed it then to fall short, but that's based on my personality. Of course, I say that and haven't made my goal for 4 months! LOL! ;)

Also, there's no requirement to list what you did. I do it simply because I can be a total ditz and can't remember if I included the last thing I did or not. Therefore, I list what I did to help me keep track. ;)  I do like seeing what other people are doing though if you post it because it gives me good ideas of things to try.
