Fitness What's your favorite yoga dvd? Sep 09 2009

Thank you for posting this! I have been thinking of getting back into yoga and taking a month long challenge to see if it works for me. That being said i wonder if there is a good yoga DVD that will increase my strength as well or if all yoga is good for that in general. Ive been thinking of grabbing the 'Biggest Loser' yoga by Bob Harper, does anyone have any experience with this one?

I also feel obligated to point out i am trying to gain some strength rather than lose weight. One reason why i wanted to do yoga or something else low impact. I am also planning on incorportaing the BFL weightlifting regime for strength and was wondering if anyone knew anything about that one. had some experience with it? (Sorry for hijacking the thread you all!)

Weight Gain Weight Gainers-What Did YOU Eat Today?? 9/3-9/17 Sep 09 2009

Oh, and just an fyi.  Tessafairy and Liney, I totally agree with you about the measuring and counting.  I do know, though, that it is different for everyone.  Not everybody's eating disorder looks the same when they're in it, and not everybody's recovery looks the same either.

I used to measure and count to the extreme!  So my recovery entails letting go of those controls and realizing that it's ok if things vary.

All this to say, I do post measurements and calories on my posts, but I don't actually measure things, I just look at it and get a rough estimate.  Same thing with the calories, I mostly estimate.  If I didn't do at least that much, I would cheat myself and convince myself that I'm eating more overall than I really am.  If I just went by the food groups, I would constantly choose the 'safest' options.  I'm doing what is best for me, and it sounds like that is what you guys are doing too, so good job and keep up the good work! :)

Yeah... im gonna jump on the agreeing train, but im gonna add that in the BEGINNING it may be a good idea to measure a few things. I only say this becuse when your first coming out of all those engrained self destructive behaviors its really easy to backslide  by fooling yourself into thinking that "This is enough" when our observations are totally askew. That being said i did stop weighing everything recently and gave my food scale to the salvation army yesterday after finding it at the bottom of a box i hadnt opened since i moved. I found it and was like: "OUT DEMON SPRIRT!" I remember i used to weigh out things like ketchup....... REALLY? Now, i just take what i want and listen to my body. Give it plenty of good and wholesome foods and the best thing ever was when i STOPPED thinking about everything. Now ill say a little prayer (for you!) or ill whip out the guitar... or take a nice long drive and sing at the top of my lungs. Also, check out the link to a new ed blog i found... its from a guys perspective and i just like the way he writes/perceives things.

Weight Gain how much exercise? Sep 06 2009

Im planning on the same thing, what I think you should do is take like two weeks and focus on eating enough to gain. Then, once you can do that sedentary and overcome the hurdle of eating more THEN make your transition back into exercising. Its alright to stay active while your gaining weight but make sure that your prepared to eat more as a result.

Then again, thats a good thing. Eating is somehting meant to be enjoyed! Not to mention its going to fuel your body so you can be more awesome!!!!!

Lauren: It sounds like you might have a little bit of Body Dysmorphic Disorder, i only assume this because i go through the same thing and share a bunch of the same thoughts you do. That being said, let me ask you this.... whats the difference between 100 and 105 rather than the number? Unless were giving out test scores i dont think its really important, and i have not seen any number two pencils being broken out in the great classroom of life recently. Here, in this classroom, there are no notes and no homework to turn in. However, there is the constant assignment to LIVE.... counting is not living.

Also, i would think more along the lines of WHO is telling you to gain a little weight. If its someone like Regina George from the corner cafeteria table then i wouldn't really think twice as 'mean people can suck it'. Howev-sies, if its you mom and circle of friends youv'e known since kindegarden then their advice might be a little more viable. But, either way... dont get held up on what numbers are and stoopid things like that. You better than that and dont deserve it.

Also. drinking milk is a good way to go. The vanilla silk in a smoothie is like God spat in a blender. Also, natual peanut butter oats is like a superfood. The nut butter blends right in man you get all the taste but none of the stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouthiness.

To hit on the God issue again, it is true that God gave us animals to eat. We originally had everything we needed in the Garden of Eden, but when Adam fell to sin all that perfection was taken away. In fact, there is even a book 'The Makers Diet' that outlines an eating regime as dictated by the scriptures and includes meat.

On the flip side, when people ask me why I choose not to eat meat i tell them that i have no problem eating meat, dairy and eggs if i knew the animals were taken care of and raised according to God in the first place. Then i think about antibiotics, hormones, prodding and steroids... then i want to adopt a calf

and a piglet

and a sheep.....

*also, with regard to a bear eating a fish and calling it murder, a bear is also designed to eat said fish. A bear has protrusive canines capable of searing flesh and a stomach loaded with enzymes capable of dealing with the raw meat. Meanwhile, a human needs to catch, filet, marinate, cook and garnish the fish in order to eat it. Again, im not shunning the omnivores of the world... meat is neat. I choose not to and if your all ok with that then who am i to judge?

Am I doomed to be like this forever? Alone, depressed, skinny and wasting away? I dont know what to do, I'm lost, completely lost and all I want is to be happy and healthy. I want to eat, I love food. I want to have friends, I want a boyfriend, I want to travel, live, love and breath. But I cant..I just, I dont know. I'm sorry, I feel like an idiot writing this, really..Im just crying out for one more chance to do this again, one more shot at living, one more. I dont want this eating disorder anymore, I dont want it. How do I change? How do I help myself? How do I do this completely alone with no one to lean on?

god, I'm sorry. I didnt realise I wrote a novelEmbarassed

First off, no apologies. This is hard and it gets harder and everyone who knows what it's like would agree with me.

Second, i feel sorry for you. Apologies if that sounds mean but im looking at how you define youeself and it makes me sad. What do you like to do in your leisure time? Are you a movie lover, painter, musician, do you enjoy reading and playing Halo 3? Stand up comedy, writing poetry, swimming, singing, studying, doodling, running, volunteering at an animal shelter. If nothing else i bet your an awesome friend...... and i would describe myself as that. If you THINK your sad and lonely then it only makes sense that this is the way you will feel/behave. I know you can do it, you have th tools and the knowledge and made a good move by coming over here for a little support. BUT - if i want to sail to Hawaii but dont raise the sails then im not going to go anywhere fast. You can DO it! (do is a verb - implying action). If you need random motivation fel free to message me and know that people like your parents/friends/therepists are ALWAYS there and love you. :)

It's going to be different from everyone. I would say up it for like a week then track your progress. If you see a HOOOOGE change then back it to where it was and if your still slowing then up it a little more. Its highly personal, which i think it highly awesome!

Eating when im not hungry.

I've actually had to do this over the last two days since i've been living the life of what seems like a shut-in recently. Also, working to not restrict as a result of triggers at home. Won't go into it because everyone here is kicking so much A, but know that i will NOT restrict! Im gonna keep eating until my grandma tells me i look like me again (lol).

Fizzle: I'm a new vegan as well and think its fine for a weight gain diet. The way i tell whether or not its an ethical choice or not is when ill think about eating something and be concerned about the caloric amount rather than whether its vegan or not. Once i get thoughts like these its time to re-evaluate and kick it old school. As per olding on to some fod here and there tupperware is always a good thing and so is a good old protein bar. Whole foods makes a couple active green bars (closest thing to unprocessed food bars) also lara's and clifs. Not to mention the clif builder bars and you could also make a bit tray of brownies or something and cut/wrap each one up. Make sure to bring a couple extra though because you know people are gonna want to share with you.

Theo! My Heart!!

  • refeeding - to tell you the truth i have beat around the bush to the point that, if i make sure i stay hydrated, refeeding/bloating was only an issue that first bout with recovery. However, i feel ive only really gone recovery gung-ho once so im not going to give you a hard-and-fast rule. Howev's i will remind you that it passes whatever happens and is not a big deal at all. If anything its going to help you that your working since you have something you can focus on other than your weight.
  • As with getting the food in and everything i would say think of your body like a car. When your low on gas you stop for a fill up and i usually top off the tank (they say not to but i dont care), i so this so i can drive for a good long while and eventually, maybe not all in a day, but eventually all the gas gets used up. I can put more gas in it whenever i want to and its going to keep running. Babe, your driving a Jag.... not only do you need to fuel up that bad boy but i think it needs some high quality petrol... of at least a stop at the chippy.

Thanks Blue, that really makes me smile which is what i know you were going for. Today... the challenge was jumping on the cashew butter train for breakfast, with pancakes and a banana. WHAT?!?!? Nut butter that early in the morning? Surely you jest.

I jest you not......... and dont call me Shirley.

Also, the 'rents asked me to go to dinner with them tonight. Their place of choice is a restaurant near the house my mother attributes as "The place where Clay Wigged out that the spinach was sauteed in Olive Oil", time to crush that and hit up some tofu/spinach ravioli. Vegan friendly, of course. Mr guilt stayed home again today... and cashew butter is like God's snot it a jar (thats a good thing)

Also, Coco... thats the best thing you can do for yourself. Tomorrow doesnt exist and yesterday is nothing more than a good story at best. Ergo, cherish today and live for it. Its a gift and its time we took it out of the wrapping and started playing with it.

Theo, i am right there with you babe. New job, a move, everything. But the difference now is that we know what needs to be done now AND we know how to do it better than anyone! The trick is to just let go and eat, know your body wants it and honor that. Also, its a reson to put on that little 'cushion' just to make sure something like this doesnt happen again. You know im gonna want you at full strength when i come up to london and sweep you off your feet!

Also... how was the trip to Mcdonalds? I was thinking about going recently but i dont think they agree with the vegan diet all to well, lol. Stay strong Theo, know that im here if you ever want to message me or anything else like that ;)

So, i have not posted in a while cause i fell of the train like WHOA! I've been counting obsessively but pretending that im not, ive been loosing weight and saying DANG IT, but have silently been cheering, ive been talking a good game but not doing anything about it behind closed doors.

However.... Today i was extremely motivated and content that mainaining a low weight is not something i want to leave this world being remembered for and in order for me to succeed in other things to ensure that doesnt happen... its time to man it up. So, today i did not count/log anything and i ate what i wanted!

It was awesome. I had Dark Chocolate Dreams PB for the first time, serves myself some beans and rice without measuring andhad dessert at home without thinking twice (best vegan PB cookie in the world). Where's the guilt? No idea.

Im actually doing stronglifts right now and really like the program. I can get in and out of the gym pretty quick and have seen some good gains. Also, since im working more on getting stronger i dont have to fret about cardio as much as other exercise programs (its just punishment for the body.... i swear!)

Howevsies, since you are looking to loose a little weight i would say supplement the program with some cardio and on the of days (you only lift three times a week on these programs) you would do about 20 mins of jogging swimming, even walking at a resonable pace on an incline. Also, last thing, for fat loss keep the cardio workout constant and at a reasonable pace (20 mins at 4.5 - 5.0 on the treadmill) You would burn more calories sprinting but the fat cals burned are going to be more which sounds like what you want. Keep us posted brother!

Yeah, and to be honest I enjoy lifting more. I think I just need to start keeping a more detailed training log so I can track my progress. Focus more on lifting more each week and seein how much stronger I get. I think this is where I lose motivation sometimes.
Health & Support Sister Getting ED? My Fault. Aug 12 2009

Original Post by kittysly101:

My first thought when I read this: You recovering would set the ultimate example. No matter what anyone tells you, you're not going to be able to help blaming yourself if you do infact think this is somehow your fault. So take the incentive. I can see you really care about your sister and this is an excellent incentive for recovery.

We all strive to make a difference...contribute to something biggger than ourselves. Here's your chance. Show her that you are strong, you care, you want to be healthy, you want to live and living with ED is no way to live. Set the example. It's the best thing you can do.

Also, if you not wishingt this on others isnt the biggest reason to recover then i dont know what will be. Your right when you say that this is not a way to live and i agree that the more you work to recover the more your going to help your sister.

As per talking to your sis about things i would say, dont call her out or anything but pull her aside and tell her about your recovery and how the thought of it on anyone was so detestable that you are gonna go balls to the wall to recover. Who knows, she may even come out and tell you what shes been doing and if that is the case then you can both get back on track together. Which would be awesome towards both of your recoveries. Go get 'em dear... you got this.

Okay, before we start the new venture i just want to throw in my couple before i het the sack. Mostly, im afraid ill lose control and wake up one morning being 330 lbs again and wondering what the hell happened. Also, when i tell peolple i lost weight and got from where i was to where i am they are always pretty impressed and surprised and im worried ill loose that badge. Basically, i have come to associate myself with weight loss and a low weight rather than all the other things that make me special.

I used to love to sing, laugh, climb trees, make people laugh, bake for people, be adventurous, play the guitar, grab a PB&J on the go and set a new best for myself when i was in the gym. Now... im the guy who can maintain a weight that makes people who dont know him wonder if something is wrong and makes the people that care about him worry about what decisions he makes about food (constantly, it seems). Im also the guy who makes his mother cry. go me...

Vegetarian Constant defense of the vegan switch Aug 07 2009

Believe me, i thought about that before the switch. But overall health and a cruelty free lifestyle really appealed to me. I guess the only thing that really gets to me about it is the people around me constantly calling it out as something used ONLY to restrict which it is not. Im not afraid of nut butters, olive oils, sugars in fruit or having carbs late at night. I always veiwed it as an abundance of food rather than a restrictive lifestyle, but I know i still worry people. What im trying to do now is a challenge to not count and just eat the vegan food. A no holds barred vegan lifestyle. Still making healthy choices but not obsessing or wiggin out when i 'have to have white rice rather than brown' then see what happens at the end of the month... not weighing till then.

Today i clocked in somewhere between 157-160 (stupid scales). Lets see what happens? Im sure if anyone can do it its this guy right here.

Brother, you read my mind. I did EXACTLY the same thing at the beginning of the month and am kind of exited to just 'see what happens'. Also, im coupling that with the fact that im a recent vegan and seeing if a mass of healthy foods is desireable for a leaner gain than animal products. Man, i LOOOOVE talking about my body like it belongs in a test tube. It also takes the pressure off and allows be to be flexible with meeting people out in the world for things and just living again. Party on!

Do you have an accountability partner? I ask only because i know there will be some times where it gets hard and when it does feel free to PM me (im also on the f-book and all that good stuff). Im also 22, but a little taller and heavier 6'3'' 160. Are you stoked!?!?! Im STOKED!!!!! AAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! (where's the cereal?)
