Weight Loss Confused about Biking Jul 01 2010

I'm sorry both you two are correct, I almost always bike with friends at a specific speed.  Hence I work a bit harder then they do on the better bikes when the same speed is part of it all. I think i sorta of muddied the water. if you are very  sure you are going to bike I think a "good" (sorry "fancy" was the wrong word) bike is much better then a cheap one. So many of us with the best intentions buy alot of stuff and never use it. So a $500 (or more) bike can be silly if its not used. I would totally agree 100% if you are going biking alot and plan to stick to it, getting fitted for a good bike will make it much more fun.

But to start i might suggest a cheap one, most the stores around here have some for under $50 (last years), try it a bit, if its what you want and your sure, a fitted nice bike is an awsome thing. many riders  will be sore when they ride a poorly fit bike. And the first few times your butt will probebly hurt, it gets better :)

I have gotton so close to a NICE bike and probebly will get one, but with ND summers really being 3 months I keep saying that kind of investment is to much.  And yes, it was about inside bikes not outside.. sorry again  :)

biking (and staying very busy so I didnt snack) where key for me. One big thing I noticed is the differnece in bikes. My friend bought a "fancy" bike (im useing a walmart bikeTongue out). My bike at 12-14MPH will make you work and then some (mountian bike) even on level road. His bike (a bike made for speed and pavement) will go 15+ and I never even break a sweat. his bike is alot lighter then mine also (but that wont make to much differnce for plain old riding. When we swapped bikes i was convinced i wanted the "easier" bike .. till I thouhgt about it, i was doing it for excersise... so easy wasnt waht i wanted.

During Winter I got a stationary bike. I will admit it was another wallmart one, cheap.. I have a calorie and speedometer on all my bikes.. the road bikes (the feinds easy one and my hard one) all read about the same calories per mile..but I can tell you I'm working alot harder on the Mountian Bike. The Stationary reads when i adjust it to about the same tenstion as my mountian bike (no science, just a feel). The sationary read even more calories...

So I cant say there is any real way to know. use the guides, they all match the easy bike pretty close as far as i can tell.

one thing i will say, in winter riding the stationary, it seems 100% harder to do, not the actual peddeling, just sitting with nothing to look at ... man is it boring compared ot outside.

I like tuna too, but so obsessed with calorie counting (when i started) i cheked everything i ate and found out before i had one (subway Tuna) its almost the most calories of anything there. The MAYO kills it, and there is no way to remove it. Almost all SUBWAY stuff is listed without any sauce or cheese, the chesse is 50 calories per 6 inch and the sauces can vary alot..

I do believe the 6 Inch roast chicken is the lowest calories (err excluding he veggie one, I'm a MEATATARIAN).

Dang post above me beat me to it. Jared has suposedly gained quite a bit of weight since his lowest (he still looks pretty thing to me, but he does dress in pretty baggy cloths). I know i read someplace he was going to go back on the Diet (subway) that he used before.

Any step to eating healthy (most "systems" require this) is a good one. But as a "I will try anything" person (and a internet addict) i read about them all. ALLI can rightfully claim it helps lose weight. The average weigth loss on people who used ALLI over a year was 4 lbs (per 3 studies  that ALLI lists so so they can advertise that- Google can be so helpfull). So if that holds true and you stick to the plan you should lose 30 lbs in 7.5 years. I hate to be negative, loseing wieght is already so dang hard, any help (pill, system, support) should be considered a step in the right direction.  I guess all i would say is TRY it, see if it works for you (no two of us are alike). If you are prepared for the known side effect and it works, maybe its worth it. Personally after 4 or 5 systems, i found the one that worked for me. UGH, healthy eating, counting calories like they where money and my life depended on them, minumium of 30 minutes a day on cardio (most days 1 hour) and not falling off the wagon EVER! it was dang hard for about 2-3 weeks, and slowly got easier.. BUT i have since fell off the wagon some... (40 gone in one summer, 7 back in 3 years).. i'm on a reboot as we speak... and I'm failing ..... cant keep away from pizza!

hate to say it but yes it appears you are eating to little. I wont say you are as Im not a "every person is the same so the rules fit us all" person. But I would suggest upping your calories for a week or a two and see what happens.

I love this site and the info, and all of its great. If i had anything to add , my simple rule to losing weight. Keep busy, if you are ALWAYS doing something you have to plan when to eat, hence you plan what you eat too. It was the #1 thing that helpped me (besides the stand bys, eat right, excersise). When i was always doing something, and i dont mean excerisise, i mean just "doing something, cleaning a closet, fixing stuff, walking, visiting friends, working on my old car. etc.. anything that wasnt "siting and watching TV" as i tend to snack when im sitting and doing nothing. it kinda sucks at first as less food and more activity will make you wore out a it, but after a couple weeks it was natural and i tended to feel sir crazy if i wasnt doing something.

and a side effect, you get all that crap you should have done ages ago, done!

good luck!

Almost the exact same story as me. I started here at 40, and 240 pounds, i had tried alot of stuff and didnt get very far. happy to say im 42 now and 200, but unhappy to say the first 40 all came off in one summer, and I have just been maintaning the last year and half. Actually gaind and lost about 5 pounds several times (not good).  My trick (if you call it that) was the old standby. I started eating 600 less calories then my stated maintain level. I watched and counted um like they where money. I then started riding bike, that first month was heck... But again did it every day. Exercise everyday of some form is very important in my mind. And the LIFESTYLE change, its just true. You have to start eating better, fruit, veggies, etc.. One thing I will add, i had a really hard time (impossible almost) sticking with it all to start. I found I made a list of all the stuff I needed to do, even made up some busy work. So after I got home from work ( the money making kind) i had my supper, and got to my list. I made sure I was kept busy for 2-3 hours ever night away from food and snacks. Did my bike ride, and soon there was a tired person, watching a little TV or doing something fun, then bed. I found it simple to not snack then. So my advice, stay busy so you wont be sitting in front of tv for 3-4 hours thining about a snack.  GOOD LUCK, its hard, but if you really stick to it for a month YOU WILL SEE BIG resaults.

All the advice here is great, but even the best advice sometimes wont work. The SINGLE thing that worked the best for me was the old standards. You have heard them a MILLION times, it gets old, but most of the time they simply work. Much like you I needed to lose about 80 pounds to be my Ideal wieght. When you start, it goes really fast if you really stick with it, then your body starts to understand its got to work with what its givin and starts to work more efficent. I found i hit a wall at about 40 lbs. I stuck with if for about 4-5 more months with no change, i tried less calories one day, more the next, more exercise, less, I even tried bing days. Soon I just sorta got lazy, no change for all that work. I gained back about 10 pounds.. and now its been a VERY hard battle to get back to it. You really gotta count every calorie, and I mean every single one! Move some, I would guess you get a fair workout (if you are training for fireman?) never skip working out/excercise, you just cant.  You sound busy, thats good, 24 hour awake, thats bad (but its also life, sometimes you cant change it). As for meal, you just gotta make the time to make some, there are a MILLION things you can buy at the store that nuke quick, not all are tasty, but they are easy and quick, and almost all come in calorie counting packs, again not my recomendation, but if time is a problem it my be the only answer for short term. Fruit is wonderfull, you can actually buy a bagged salad nowdays. I know its not real help (actualy will sound annoying, Im not meaning to be), but if you cant find the time to make the meals or buy them, nobody else will do it for you. You have to want to lose the wieght. And I know its hard, really hard. I have fell off the wagon and am trying REALLY hard to get back on... not 100% succesfully yet (and I been trying for almost a year now).. I'm not gaining, but I'm not loseing either.. the only good thing is.. right now my habits suck, so if i can get back to the "right" way of eating I think i can turn it around. As the poseter above said, change things one aat a time.

Weight Loss Every other day fasting (EODF) - the restriction diet with PROVEN benefits. Oct 14 2009

I think the reason so many get "excited" about any diet that premotes not eating is the INTERNET. People think most anything they read on a somewhat Oficial looking page is correct and real (no this is not a knock on the OP, its a knock on people and the internet). People dont use common sence anymore, if its in print its OK, or alwasy right (its not). I have been here for a couple years and honestly credit it as helping me lose the weigth i have. I am one who likes to read all the ideas, hear all sides.  So many here think we all have the same exact body and the "standard" will alwasy work. Its just not the case. Some people can eat 3000+ a day and not gain, some can eat 1800 and gain (both are the extremes). All the knowledge here is a GUIDELINE most of us can use, and any drastic changes (less calories or fasting) should all be done when you have consulted a DOCTOR.

I myslef have read the studies on mice, very interesting. They have some studies on monks who do fasting somelace too (sorry goggle didnt help me so I have no links). The ones I read had some facts on nutrition also. there was some coralation that fasting had some longer life benafits. I cant remeber exactly but I think there was something about them all being at healthy wieghts, eating well balanced diets and active too (the last three might have been all it took to live longer). But the fasting did not seem to hurt them.

The one thing i see as flawed here (opinion only), if skipping a day, but then eating what you want works, why wouldnt the standard "eat correct amount and healthy"work?  All you are doing is cutting your calories down, So would you eat 1800 on your on days then? or 3000? Wouldnt just cutting back a few more calories on normal days do the same? Or is it all about the 24 hours without food, is there some benafit that your body is suposed to gain from this? I can see this working for some possibly, a very few. I sure wouldnt try it untill it was a last resort so to speak. Again, I know sometimes the "correct way" doesnt work for people. But working in an office full of dieters who all say "I cant lose, but I eat right and not to much!" then seeing them eat a good meal on monday, tuesday, then on wednesday eating Mcdonalds, thursday good meal, friday Burgerking, etc, can only imagine waht they do at night.. Most just simply DONT follow the rules. I myslef had this problem, I ate what I was assuming was correct, but when I FINALLY wrote very scrap of food down, i found my 1500 calories soon turned into closer to 2200+ hence i didnt lose and didnt gain. In my opinion this is the #1 reason people dont lose. Assuming you sorta guess what you are eating just wont work. A simple sandwhich, bread chease, meat, butter, all adds up really fast! (opps this is off track).

If somebody actually tries this (and consults a doctor!!!!!) i would be interested in the results. Again, i think it would be close to impossible for me, If i miss my meger breakfast I almost always break down and eat a snack before lunch. I cant see anyway i could make a full day.

As a copy of you (same Hight and wieght(almost)) but big age diff though. Never get hung on the scale, its a bad idea. It happened to me alot. I started at 245 about and am now 201, and I have seen some strange changes in my weight. I have a good digital scale, alwasy weigh at same time everytime I do. I started doing it once a day, and now do it once a week.  I know I have actually seen a 3 pound swing. It used ot bug me to no end, all the work and gaining! But then next week it would be back to what it should be. The scale is a guide, its just a number. When you start its hard not to get fixated on it, I KNOW. Also the calories you should eat, thats just a guide also. Its a great rule of thumb and I say its the best guide to follow. But..... No two bodies are the same, there are people who can eat non stop and never gain, and (if you believe all the posts here) people who eat a carrot a day and gain a pound. I must agree, you maybe starving yourslef, try upping the calories a bit. And after a few weeks see, if not you may need to eat a bit less (but I doubt it). Keep at it.

Weight Loss burn meter Jan 06 2009

If you are talking about the one on your homepage on this site i can explaine (I think). Its main number (little one on top) is the calories you would normally burn in a full day. This number is taken from the info you fill in (hieght/weight, lifestyle/age, etc). The large number is the calories estimated that you would have burned at the time the page refreshes. So if you are a 2200 calorie a day person, if at noon you looked at it it should be roughly in the 800-1000 range as that is a guess on how much the average person would have burned by that time of day.

Its really just a very rough guage to look at and compare to your eat meter. That help?

I used the Subway diet :) lots of 6 inch subs, no cheese or sauce, all the low fat ones, mixed it up. Also did 10 miles on mountin bike 5-6 days every week all summer. Winter i just maintain, dont lose , dont gain. I have mixed my diet up since i started.. i dropped about 40lbs the first summer. Since the first summer i have only dropped about 5-8 pounds... seem to be stuck, but pretty happy with current weight, and my eatting habits are 100% better.. and best of all  NO MORE heartburn, had it for years.. and now I have none.

Anybody with any ideas on how to jump start the loseing again, point um out.. I have stuck with my 1600-1800 calories and its not working anymore, my body is now to used to it i think.

Now this might be slightly discourageing, but its not ment to be. I started about the 240 range, and am now about 190 and while i never really felt they where man boobs, they where not waht i would like. I would say they have disappered some, and are very noticbley less then they where, but still there. I do think as you make progress (you have made HUGE progress!!!) your idea of waht is ok/not ok, larege/ not large, etc changes.. I know i have changed size and am much better/slimmer then before but as time goes on i look at myslef now and know i need to do more so they may seem worse/larger/ wahtever then they are.  They do go down, they do improve, and i would hazzard to say you have improved greatly, its just now you want more.. keep at it.. the first 50 where easy for me, it the last 30 (if i get that far) that are tough.. I thouhgt this was all easy, i dropped 40 in no time, now its been a year for the last 10.. but if i keep on track, heck 10 a year.. Im good.

Fitness How much do i need to ride my bike to lose weight? Aug 28 2008

As a huge believer in biking to lose weight I want to let  you know its great for it!. But the first few weeks, even months may be tough. As one person said your butt may be sore for awhile, it goes away, not fast enough , but it does. Make sure you get a bike that fits you somewhat, you can get mightly sore if you dont. Also I know alot of people will tell you to buy an $$$ bike. I say buy a cheap one to start, if you really get into biking, then buy a good bike. Walmart and other toy stores close out bikes this time of year, I bought a bike last year for $38 (last years model, was normaly $120). The cheap bikes are heavy and wont take alot of abuse, but I dont abuse it, and heavy? So what, i want to burn calories.  Dont overdo it, when you start to ride, slowely build up, take the first 10-20 minutes to slowly build up to a good pace, going fast right away always seems to burn me out right away. Also build up distance, first few time i rode, 3 miles seemed like riding to the moon, now i do 10 miles almost every night at about 13-15MPH (on a heavy slow cheap Mountain bike).

As for how much you need to do, wow thats a hard question to answer, bike computers are also cheap , about $15 at walmart, they may nbot be real acurate, but they can be a guide. Mine says the 10mile trip at my speed is about 400 calories at my wieght.

anything longer then 4-6 miles i would recomend drinking some water, keeping hydrated will keep your muscles from burning.

Dont think you need to do it all the first few times you go riding, build up to longer and faster trips. if you make it really hard work to start, less chance you will stick to it.

good luck!

Walmart, target, all those major stores that sell bikes should have the $15 (or so) bike computers, pretty easy to set up and use. How acurate I dont know but they are a great motivator i must agree. I swear by bike riding, I lost 40lbs last summer bike riding (and calorie counting) and stalled all winter, now I'm back on bike (ya I slacked 3 monhts of summer) but in last month have dropped about 10lbs again (sounds like alot for a month, but i lost 14 the first month of bike riding last year, then is slows down alot). I recomend it...best advice i can give, start out slow, I thought i was going to die the first few bike rides, but it got better pretty fast. Also, dont be afraid to hit the bike store and get a wider seat (my butt was something awfull sore till i got one, and then it was still a bit tough (but much better) now its great, never bothers me at all.. Sorry for the long post but I LOVE MY BIKING!

I'm not sure how it works, but Dont people in very good/fit shape use less calories? Sprinter, I would guess he (dont know who he is) probebly weighs 120-140ish? I would also bet he was eating some food (protien?) mostly for endurance, not healthy /balanced. The Strict calorie thing. I personly (opinion only!!!!!!) think its set at what it is becuase quite simpley we (dieters, athletes, etc) are simply not smart enouhg to police ourselves (not everybody, but some out there just do not have common sence). NO 2 BODIES are the same, there are people who eat nothing but crap (junk food, etc) and dont gain weight, its just simply true. If doctors, or diet people said, well eat 900 calories in print (not personal one on one so they could watch you) and some fool did it and also worked out 4 hours a a day and died, somebody else would sue um. i think the established calorie numbers are probebly pretty dang close for "most" people. But a few, maybe not.. I work in an office with all women (im male) and 75% of them are on diets. Thye all count calories, and not a one does it even remotly correct. salads that are 300 calories with enouhg ranch dressing to gag a horse, they dont count that, or think 5 Tbs looks like 1Tbs .. I myslef am guilty of that, I started truely logging every snack, every item on a sub, every cracker i put in my soup, etc.. and found i was quie often 2-400 calories off. opps getting off base here. I can belive its true, but I bet they dont stay on that diet except when trainning.

love my bike, started last summer and still like doing it, feel like i miss out if i skip a night. But (not to be a wet blanket) I'm reading 10 miles in 30 minutes,  isnt that 20mph? Or is this stationary stuff and setting that are "equivelent" to riding 10 miles? I know with a Mountina bike 12-15 is a real burn, well for the average person. Only reason Im asking is i have a calorie (heatrate) thing and i avg about 12-14 for an hour and after doing this for a year+ its a huge workout for me and it takes me 45 minutes to do 10 miles. I thought i was getting into chape, but maybe im not?

anyways, love to hear others are biking.. 40+ pounds in 4 months last summer for me and all i did was rode bike 1 hour 5-6 days a week and made sure i was under 2000 calories (male).

Count me in on the bike cardio thing, 40 lbs in one summer of biking (and keeping my calories in check). And the best part is biking is fun, none of that sitting in one spot stuff ( oh, sorry if you need to do the stationary bike thing, did some this winter its boreing).
Weight Loss For those who bike and are/were over 200 pounds? Jul 02 2008
05:36 (UTC)

Biking (and staying busy so I didnt snack) was key for me, I lost 40 lbs last summer by biking and sticking to a 1800 calorie diet. I ride about 10 miles almost every night now. The first few rides where Heck though.. I knew i was out of shape, but holy heck, i was one step from dying (At least it seemed that way) the first few rides. I'm no expert, not even close but i started at 240 and am now 200 (winter and no biking killed the wieght lose, but im doing it again). For me, I bouhgt a cheap Mountina bike at Walmart for $70. And its got over 800 miles on it now ( bouhgt a speedo for it too) and never gave me a problem ( most bikers tell you a cheap bike is the worst thing you can do)  mine is heavy, but the point was a workout so that never bothered me. My buddy started riding with me and got a Hybred and we swapped.. its about half as hard to peddel and ride.. much easier. I toyed with the idea of getting one but decided to wait a bit yet (want to lose a bit more). The Cheap heavy bike is burning more calories, so the question on that is yes! thre is a difference in bikes. And i think you are 100% right in the "just get moving". The things i would have done different... My bike is to small, something you dont really know till you ride it. So at about 8-10 miles my shoulders and neck get sore becuase I'm leaning to much.  So maybe my best advise, get a bike that is your size, it really really really matters! I also got ride of that 2" wide seat and got a bigger one, while i cant tell you your butt wont be sore (its going to be, and then some) it does get better the more you ride, much better. Most Bike stores ahve some pretty good bikes int eh $250+ range, but dont be afraid to buy a cheap one to start if you are unsure. Most stores (walmart, kay-be) have last years modles and will sell um really cheap (jut keep in mind that size thing). from my reading on the web (maybe incorrect) you should have your leg only slightly bent when the pedel is at its farthest point, which wil mean you may need the seat fairly high, that in turn means the handlebars wil need to go higher.. that is the problem with cheap bikes, they dont have much adjustment.. of course that all depends on your hight, im 5'10' so the normal wallmart bikes are just a tiny bit to small fro me.   If your anything like me you will be adicted.. i cant belive how much i enjoy the ride. Dont push it, dont get out and pump those legs right away, start slow, build up to it (the start of a ride and the length too) I started at 2 -3 miles and was at 10 in no time.

And like i say, I'm no expert, not even close, just what happned with me.. and 40lbs later I'm 100% happy with bikes! Nice side effect of all this riding.. its 92 out today and I was out for a ride, it was warm, but I tolarate heat much better now, that is most likely the "better health and less wiegth thing" but I do like that I dont wanna stay inside when its over 80 now.

GOOD LUCK! and get peddling!

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
